OP, did you have to take the hood off?
And has anyone else used the intake manifold as a place to lift the engine? Kinda worried about the weight messing up something

I've used the intake manifold as the hoisted point multiple times before. Also used a couple of bolts like the power steering in conjunction with them.

You do not need to the the hook off or anything. I draped a towel over the front bumper just for protection. The key is to make sure you have an even hoist point so that both sides are pulled up evenly. Also make sure there isn't too much slack in the chains. Your Crane will hit the hood, if the tension point is too high due to too much chain.

Believe it or not, the block isn't that heavy lol. I'm not weak but i pulled the short block off the engine stand and put it on my bench. The crank is heavy. Heads are maybe 60 lb total or something. I think the entire block weighs like less than 350lb, but don't quote me on that

Long block is heavy ish(more awkward to grab). Short block pfft if someone cant lift that they seriously need to hit the gym.

Maybe it's just us Swedish ;-) but i'd agree. Two people could probably pull the engine out by hand if the quarter panels and frame wasn't there haha!

Ha i actually thought of doing just that when i couldnt get a engine lift.

Btw im mexican, living in Sweden. Ya i know weird.

Must say, thank you. Followed your walk-through and the motor came out without a hitch. Had to use the pry bar, but used hardly any effort when I did. Now to tear it down, put all on the new shortblock and hope that it goes back it almost as easy as it came out.

I already had 1 bolt out so the top bolt that is sticking out had a ground on it.
There is a 1 wire plug and a big wire on a stud like the alternator.

10. Remove turbo. Straight forward when you have a UR GT35R. Comes out on the uppipe.

And a nut WAY down on both sides.

Pitch stop has to be unbolted in the front


12. Disconnect clutch fork from throwout bearing.

Thread something in. I use 1 of the battery tie downs (stolen idea from themadscientist)

OH MY GOD!!! thank you soooooo much, without this thread I never would have gotten my motor out, we were stuck for two days then I stumbled upon this tread and you saved our lifes. No one has said anything about the pin that hold the throw out fork. Yours was the only post that had it and it was the only problem. Thanks again.

Great thread, my brother and I lifted the longblock out of the bay by hand haha

But I was parting the car out so wasnt too worried about scratching anything etc

have a question, i’m new to the subie community or jdm cars in general and just picked up a 2005 wrx and the head gasket is blown i just purchased another engine for it car came with aftermarket headers , downpipe , aos , cobb intake , access port and exhaust i just want to know what i should purchase to support those mods and what i should replace while the new engine is out on the engine stand ?
