Sorry for the ancient bump, but I'm trying to sort out the difference in coil pack boot length. It's been mentioned several times, but which ones are longer never seems to get answered.

I have a new set of oem subaru 04+ sti coil packs and am running ngk bkr6eix11 iridium plugs. My heads are the 97 jdm 2.0 with the chambers converted to newer wrx 2.5 style to match my built 2.5 block. I've been running an apexi powerfc which was designed with dwell controlled internally and to run the wasted spark setup, instead of using wasted spark I've been running aftermarket beck/arnley coil on plug packs and have fried one recently. (I also fried one of the old used oem coil packs years back a matter of months after converting to coil on plug). The reason for them dying may be from the way the apexi ecu is programmed to fire wasted spark coils, maybe a dwell time incompatibility.

The haltech I will be installing soon will allow me to adjust dwell for the new coil packs, so that won't be an issue. What I want to be sure of is that the boots on the coil packs are sliding over the ngk plugs far enough for the internal spring to press on the ends securely, and that the boots seal snug and keep water out. I will be running higher boost with the ethanol sensor and the new ecu and don't want any weakness in the spark department.

Which ignition coil boots are longer, 02-05 usdm wrx oem or 04+ sti wrx oem? The coil packs I bought are the 22433AA541 model. If the 02-05 coil boots are longer, would I be able to just buy a set of those boots and swap them? The boots on mine are easily removed and reinstalled.

Thanks for any help

bumping this rather than starting a new thread. searched and found just a bunch of for sale posts.

Coil pack part # 22433AA602 says fitment is:

FORESTER 11-13 w/turbo
IMPREZA 11 (2.5L), w/turbo
IMPREZA 12-14 2.5L (turbo)
LEGACY 10-12 2.5L, w/turbo

I have a 2010 STI, what is different from the 2010 that they'd have a different coil pack

I recently needed to figure out what coils to buy for my car. There's a lot of conflicting information out there.

Here's what I've gathered:

There are two types of coilpacks, grey and black, with two separate dwell values. There are also two lengths of boots. One length for 2.0 L motors and one length for 2.5 L motors.

This, as far as I've gathered, only applies certain versions of EJ motors.

02 - 03 USDM WRX use 2.0 L length black coilpacks. These coils correspond to the V7 JDM motors.

04 - 05 WRX use 2.0 L length grey coilpacks. These coils correspond to the V8 and V9 JDM Motors.

06 - 08 WRX use 2.5 L length grey coil packs. These are never used in JDM motors.

USDM STI 2004+ use 2.5 L grey coilpacks. These are never used in JDM motors.

You can use either color coilpack on any of these motors if and only if you are able to modify the dwell time in your tune to match the color of the coilpack you use. All four coils must be either black or grey. No mismatching. Boots may be swapped between a 2.0 L length coil and a 2.5 L length coil.

I hope this alleviates someone's confusion in the future.

Hmm... my Legacy (BP5; gt spec b; JDM) takes:

22433AA480 - original part #
22433AA540 - superceded
22433AA640 - superceded
22433AA641 - superceded

So while there may be some differences in the part, it seems strange that they would allow any of these as direct replacements.

This is direct from Subaru Canada SCI Parts Enquiry.

22433AA602

This is the latest part number for STi coils. Anyone know whats the difference between these and 04 STi coils? They're supposedly an update.

Not sure on the new part #. But the 11+ wrx and sti has a different connector than the 02-10 wrx/sti

They both look identical, I have a set of oem 04 sti coils in front of me and currently looking at pics of the 11+ sti coils.

Connectors and everything else look identical except the 11+ coils are black instead of gray.

Can confirm that these coils will fit 04+ STi, I just installed a set in my 04 and it runs great with a fresh set of NGK step colder plugs.

Anyone still have knowledge about coils being "Tune specific"?
I'm possibly having an issue with some new NGK coils for my 2002.
