Anyone have their Masters in Project management or Engineering management?
I'm thinking about going back to school, and possibly looking at these 2 degrees, or an MBA.
I just want to know about any input you have on them, and what sort of jobs are out there with these degrees.

I'd be really curious what school actually offers a degree in Project Management. If you already have an engineering degree, I'd just go with the tried and true MBA. The other two just sound like slightly specialized MBA's anyway.

I thought you just had to be a bad engineer to get promoted into engineering management. That might just be where I work.

I'm getting my masters in business information systems right now. MBA's seem to be a little generic now, everyones getting them and its sort of silly that people are able to get them without any actual management experience in the states. MBA's have a lot of financial specifics which you won't really use depending on where you are, thats what the accounting department is for.

Theres a University down the street from me that offers the project management degree. The engineering mgmt degree says its not just for engineering degree holders (which I am not).

Working on getting my EMGT MBA from UofM Dearborn right now. It's a joke, 5 classes in and I'm sporting 4 A's and a 98% in my current class. The EMGT MBA program is basically the same as a MBA program except they throw a couple of engineering electives in to make it more appealing to engineers.
As far as jobs, your engineering degree will get you your job. Your EMGT MBA will help if you move up the ladder and go into supervisory positions. |

The problem is I don't have an engineering degree, I have an aviation management degree, which is useless.
I have also thought about just getting another bachelors in engineering instead. |

my wife got her MA in EM and was working at Schering plough and now works at the army. Basically, you're looking at running projects at whatever place you end up at. It's one of those degrees that isn't too specific and you can end up working anywhere.

If you prove that you aren't competent enough technically you just get promoted to project management! |

Well then, depends on what you want to do. If you want to be an engineer, get a bachelors in engineering and the let work pay for your MBA degree.

I have a Masters in Engineering Management. I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering. Honestly, go for the MBA. The MEM will teach you to manage in an engineering environment while the MBA can be applied to all fields. If I had to do it again, I'd go for the MBA.

Working as a project manager right now for a battery protection circuit board company...probably one of the easiest jobs out there for what you get paid for.
I pretty much just coordinate projects internally, make sure everyone's meeting timelines, communication point between companies and make sure customers are happy. Now the ****ty part is I'm the bottom of the hill and **** rolls downhill..in this case I'm at the bottom of 2 hills (company and customer). Anything goes wrong, I get blamed for it..but it's how you deal with it. When most companies look for a project manager, PMP is usually a requirement. If the courses don't offer this cert, don't bother. btw, before this, I had no experiences with circuit boards or PM. Hell, I went to school for operations management. I guess when it comes down to getting any job, it's how you sell yourself. The papers you carry are just extra ammo. |

http://www.brandeis.edu/rabbgrad/vis...php?prog_id=20 People in the program generally were project or program managers in their companies and really liked managing projects. There's also a certification program (pmi.org) that many companies are looking for with program managers. PM isn't my ball of wax, but I can say that being on projects with good PM support has been better than ones without. As for easy vs hard, I'd put a spike through my head if I had to do it all day, but I can see how people like it. And when someone else does the PM, I can spend more time on "real work".
