Post F-14 crashed in my area

How wierd is that ...no I don't live in the neighborhood but, I am in the flight pattern for the naval base..it is about 10-15 min from my house..I was sitting on my back porch when I still heard a jet flying..I thought it was odd because it was raining pretty hard and a little while later I hear that the very plane I have seen had crashed...I just found it to be too f'ed up..Both pilots died ..they missed a house by 50 feet...they supposedly stayed in the plane until the last second to ensure that no civilians would get hurt..it was too late to eject..
I forgot to mention that it happened during an air show..
that sucks so bad...

When I was living in San Diego, around '87 they were dropping like flies. I rember about 4 during one Summer, 2 on land (Miramar and El Cajon) and I think 2 at sea. This is one plane I would not want to pilot.

My heart goes out to the families of the pilot and the RIO. I know what it is like to see the official, blue (Air Force) sedan works it way up your street as you silently pray it doesn't stop in front of your door. It never did, but it has pulled into the driveway next to ours.

Godspeed to the crew.

Unhappy

I had a friend of mine die in this situation. The electronics in his f-18 took a dump and he radioed in that he was "going to ride it to the ground".

He ended up missing a school (in-session) by about 100 yards.

I am sure people appreciate his sacrifice but it still sucks to lose a friend.

Unhappy

It is very sad that had to happen, and you have to give credit to those guys. Pilots are a special breed, just like guys in the SEALS, Speacial Forces and in fact, all of the military. They protect us and do thier job very well.

As a prospective pilot, things like this are a part of the job...even though it scares the crap out of me, it wouldn't make me change my mind...
