Default Hella Supertones Easy Install - 2011/2012/2013 WRX

First off - No you do NOT have to remove the bumper or grill to install these horns. It took me 20 minutes to install the hellas with the bumper on. The 5 mins to take off and 5 mins to put the bumper back on would have slowed me down and been more of a hassle with risk of breaking plastic tabs.

What you need:
Hella Super tones http://www.subimods.com/hella-supertone-horn-kit.html
Subimods Hella Bracket http://www.subimods.com/subimods-com...s-bracket.html
Subimods Hella Harness http://www.subimods.com/subimods-hel...-kit-2041.html

Other Supplies:
Ratchet set, zip ties, wire cutters for the zip ties, WD40.

Step 1: Prepare the horns.
The hardest part of this install was removing the small bracket from the super tones. (See image below). To get that nut off I sprayed each nut with WD40 waited a bit and used a blanket to hold the horn snug and a ratchet to remove the nut.


Next, use that same nut and the screw built into the hellas to mount the horns to the Subimods Bracket. Then go ahead and install the 4 female power connectors on the Subimods harness to the horns.. copper terminal is positive/red. My set has no copper terminals so polarity doesn't matter seems to be the consensus.
It should now look like this:




Step 2: Remove one of the stock horns.

The stock horn behind the grill will block the subimods bracket, and since you need the connector from the stock horn to trigger the Hella relay it wont be on anyway... The other stock horn which is well hidden will remain on. Reach your arm up from under the bumper with a ratchet and undo the bold and remove the horn. Detach the wire running to the stock horn right at the horn. It is covered in conductive grease.. so have paper towels handy. The nut is attached to the metal plate and wont fall down.. just leave it there.



Yes, I am skinny but I had more than enough room to reach under.

Reach under there again with a ratchet and remove the bolt above the open hole which holds the hood latch. The nut is attached to the back of the plate.. it wont go anywhere.


Step 3: Mount the hella's.
Now... feed the whole prepared hellas/bracket/harness in and into place.. use that same screw you just removed to tighten it in place.. just let all the wiring hang for now.

In the picture below I had it upside down.. I had the more narrow part of the bracket towards the top.. I dont know if it matters.




Level them and tighten with a ratchet.




To be continued... about to hit picture limit.

Step 4: Wiring
Plug the make connector on the Subimods harness into the stock horn wire you unplugged earlier..


Next, reach under there and thread the power wires from the subimods harness up into the engine bay as shown:




Remove the lid to the fise box by the battery so you can use a ratchet to remove a bolt holding it to add in the ground wire.. My finger in the pic below is the bolt I used.. easy and good location.. well hidden with the fuse box cover back on.


At this time I disconnected the ground battery terminal (really dont know if that was necessary) and attached the red (positive) subiharness wire to the positive battery terminal and rehooked up the ground.



TEST THE HORNS!! Beep beep!!

If everything is working right there is just one more step..

Step 5: Securing/hiding wires.

Zip tie the subimods harness in the engine bay in a few places to keep it secure... I sent all the excess wire down below to deal with.


Down below.. I zip tied the wired to the metal bracket with the relay as high as possible. Then I used the hole in that metal plate just below the subimods bracket to ziptie the relay in place.. 2 ties one from each side.. hard to see in picture.



The relay is in a place where water should be minimal since a large plastic grill piece is covering it... and its pointing the correct direction for draining.

Enjoy the final product!

I'm fairly certain you installed the bracket backwards. There's a dip in the metal that allows for the hood latch mechanism to come down and by installing the bracket backwards your hood latch may or may not work.

Hood latches, there was not anything in the instructions (actually there were No instructions) saying which way it goes.. I did say above one picture that it was upside down from the way I mounted it. Ill take a closer look, it would only take a few minutes to fix if needed and I can remove that line about it being backwards above.

How stable is that bracket? I mighy use it to mount my rigid lights when i get them, looks like it would work, im just wondering how much that bounces around

I dont really think it will bounce, it does bend easy, and I feel like it could snap easy if bent far.. so hard to tell. Its very light. Its strong enough for the Hella's but I wouldnt trust it with much more, especially if there is more fulcrum effect in place

You can use the stock short brackets they come with in that first pic, but they would be so close together that the black plastic in the grill would block some of the horn. There are other holes on that plate but good luck getting a bolt threaded behind it where you cannot even fit your fingers.

i am doing this tomorrow, so looking at the 2nd pic the first post, thats the proper way it goes in? that little round indent on the bracket needs to be to the left side of the sube emblem?

Nice write-up, I appreciate it. I installed mine today, and although it's not too hard to figure out, it's always nice to have a nice write-up with tips for install.

I took my bumper cover off, just makes this sort of thing so much easier. Plus I have a grill so I can't reach up through there anyway.

As to the orientation of the bracket, the rounded cut-out should be up (toward the sky), and on the passenger side of the subie emblem. It's there to allow the hood release latch to swing down so the hood can open. You can see exactly how that works if you have the bumper cover off. If you mounted it backwards I'd be worried that something's not quite right in there, you shouldn't be able to open the hood.

Did you notice on the diaphragms of horns (the black part), one is matte black and one is shiny black?

Edited to add: The youtube videos give you no idea how damn loud these horns are.

I'll admit...I'm a dumb@ss, but I'm not clear where exactly to bolt that relay...and which direction is up or down.

Can you help a brother out, mid install...?

My hood opened and closed perfectly fine, so it must either be right, or not matter, there is nothing touching anything.

Put the bracket in a vise and use a wrench. Or grip it like superman and use a really long wrench.

Spray some wd40 or similar on the nut, wait a minute, and then rotate the mounting plate (the rectangular piece that sits between the nut and the horn) around a few times. I even put a cheater bar on the free end of the mounting plate. It's easier to move than the nut, because you can get some leverage on it. This will allow the oil to work into the space between the nut and the mounting plate, and then you'll be able to wrench the nut off.
