^ looks good/great to me...

.............

some of the reason behind modding is to make it look "not stock" and the hatches still look stock with the red to the noob eye (but so does mine with only 2 coats of vht). then again who cares about noobs but then again noobs do make up 99.9% of the population and they are the center pieces of conversations about your car in public... there is a thread about funny things random people said about your car thread (very funny)

Love this thread. Just bought some overlays for my tails but I'm thinking I like this idea better. Looks a lot better. Keep up the great work everyone.

Cheers,
Kyle

Start reading the thread from the beginning. There different brands guys have used here and they normally identify them on their post.

Default Painted This Weekend

I had my mind set on overlays but changed my mind at the last minute. Yesterday I decided to just paint my tail lights because I hated the clear anyways and wanted the change to be permanent. Went to Autozone and picked up Duplicolor Metalcast red and some clear coat. IMO the biggest pain in the ass was getting the hatch liner off and putting it back together, it didn't line up very well. Just took my time masking the reverse and blinker lights but even that wasn't to bad.

Ended up putting about 3 thick coats of Metalcast then wet sanded it with 2000 grit (helped smooth the paint out great) then proceeded with another 3 coats of clear coat. here's the finish product sorry about the size:

Too remove the paint, what would you use? Mine faded away and I'm about to redo them...

Try goo gone, mineral spirits or acetone. You should test it in something else first.

Used nail polish remover. It worked great but left the tail light kinda foggy a little. No big deal though. Overlays coming in soon

would you guys do the overlay or paint them?

I would think the overlay would last longer than paint....

It seems like all the overlays have slight wrinkles where they wrap around the light no matter what.

Thats why I went paint...and plus paint is 7x cheaper than overlays

Just finished mine. Two light coats of VHT Nightshade Black on the reverse and signal portions (rest taped off), and then three coats of VHT Nightshade Red on the brake lights and 3rd brake light (with the blacked out parts taped off). Finished it off with two coats of Dupliclor Acrylic Enamel High Gloss Clear.

For the 3rd brake light, after looking at the wing and not wanting to take it off, I just popped the two caps on the bottom of the 3rd brake light, put in a small phillips screwdriver bit and then grabbed onto it with a set of vice grips and just undid it. When it was out, I took two garbage bags, cut a hole and put the light through it and just painted it as it lay on the hatch of my WRX. Turned out good. Just don't go to heavy as since I had mine in a vertical position (could not get it to sit properly horizontally) you may get drips.

I am happy with how it came out. Hopefully it holds up well, if not next time I do it I'll probably wet sand it a bit to get a more flat texture on the lights.

Hah thanks. Thats my 3 month old Husky, Kilo.
One thing I have noticed is that I have some condensation on the reverse part (hatch section) tail lights. I tried heating up the inside to get it out but its on the outside flatter part, cant seem to get to it. No big deal but a little strange.

Finally had this done! I went to Wicked Innovation to have it done and it came out great!

Only have a cell phone quality pick now, and they still need a final wet sand and buff after they cure.
