Default The 4.8 Hours of Finger Lakes

In the spirit of the 48hrs of Tristate, today I will be circumnavigating the Finger Lakes region of Upstate NY using the following route -

Starting at Exit 44 of the NY Thruway/Interstate 90
West to Interstate 390
South to Interstate 86/Rt 17
East to Interstate 81
North to Interstate 90
East to Exit 44

This looks like about 300 miles, which I figure I can do in 4 hours and 48 minutes driving time (4.8 hours - get it?)

Hopefully, I'll get some pics along the route.

Not planning any kind of organized event going forward, but, hey - you never know.

Finger Lakes area was cool when we drove through during the last day of the trip. Have fun!

Well I survived.
Total mileage - 323.8
Total time - 5h 2m (Total time on the road 4h 47m)

A few observations:
Having a working cruise control would have been really nice
I-86/17 just east of Corning is brutally rough.
Lots o' cops south of Cortland on I-81 - both patrolling and running speed traps.
Apparently McDonald's in Binghamton doesn't consider themselves "fast" food. 15 min layover - 10 of which was waiting to make/get my burger and milkshake. A line of about 7-10 people and they had one register open.
The river valley between Syracuse and Binghamton is impressive.

OK here are some pics. They didn't turn out very well. You really need a ride-along to document the trip. Next time.

Getting underway at Exit 44

The salt operation near Mt Morris

Transition from 390 to 86. This is the only one of these because traffic was too busy at the other ones so I decided to drive rather than take pictures

The concrete canyons of Corning. It got real bumpy after this.

The valley between Binghamton & Syracuse. I assume it has a name, but I couldn't find one.

Syracuse in the distance. You can see the b-ball team getting off the bus.

The Montezuma wetlands were more wet than land.

ALWAYS cops sitting at the cortland exits, also at the 88/81/17 interchange. They've pulled my dad over twice.

Don't mean to offend my binghamton friends... but...
Binghamton + McDonalds = Doesn't surprise me

The reason I stopped there (other than I had to go potty) was the sign on I-86 that said:

"McDonald's - Exit 70N. Easy off, easy on. Busses welcome"

I figured that meant they were used to dealing with things in a expeditious manner.

Not so much.

LOL Whats wrong with Bingo JeanaBeana? Its exactly the same as every other town in the US right? lol JK...

Mike: FYI the last ext on 81 before it slows down too 55mph has a mirabido gas station. I think its exit 7 for Castle Creek.

This gas station is the only E85 station for almost 100 miles...
