All Pro Subaru - engine planning
Well, I just returned from a quick meeting with Brandon at All Pro Subaru in Alpharetta, GA today. My 06 WRX engine arrived from Oregon (bought from 06wrx_WRB in classifieds) and looks ready to be cleaned up and modded.
Brandon reviewed my performance goals and will do the following - 68HTA (ported/coated) Godspeed TMIC TGV delete GS ported exhaust + crosstube Plus several other items I couldn't even remember. Basically he's going to pull as much as he can out of this engine with the turbo and TMIC upgrade without doing anything to the internals or heads. There's also a few secret changes that may happen to the car, but I really can't disclose what those are untill next week when a few more things are confirmed. Should be a monster! At a max of say 1400lbs and 330whp, that's less than 4.5lbs/hp!!! I should loose much less power through the drivetrain compared to a standard AWD setup since I'm only using the transaxle to transmit the power; no center diff, no driveshaft, no rear diff.

6 SPEED O-P-T-I-O-N will be offered!
Well, after meeting with MMW on Monday this week it was decided that they would re-engineer the frame jigs to allow for the extra length of a 6 speed transmission into my build.
Previously I was told that only a 5 speed would fit and therefore I went ahead and bought my RA geared 02 WRX 5 speed. After searching for LSD options for my 5 speed, I concluded that I could spend close to the same amount of money and get a 6 speed that 1) was stronger 2) had a superior oiling system 3) already had a LSD. I met with the owners of MMW, Bill and Danny, and explained that future TR-42 buyers that planned on using a Subaru engine with 300+ hp would more than likely want to have the 6 speed available as an option and it would be nice for them to make that possible - They agreed! So - I have a RA geared 5 speed to sell. (Or I may save it for my friend that is planning a lower powered TR-42) Now I have to decide on which 6 speed. I'm leaning towards the 07 STI due to the taller gears in 2-3-4 but if I found a good deal on a 05 or 06 I could live with that too. |

Do you have any more pics of the frame? As you know, I'm really interested to see what you get from the company for your initial investment.

The pictures at the beginning of this post give the best overall shots of the frame. There are more pictures at exocars.net but there really won't be that much more to see than maybe a few close ups of different sections.
The prototype frame I saw this week in KY (same as pictured in this post) will be going to powdercoat maybe by next week. I would think that they may have the prototype with the Porsche engine/trans finished by around the end of January or so; better pictures will be certainly shown then. Standard specs for the TR-42 kit include the following: •DOM tubing steel frame fully welded. •Aluminum floor skin cut to size. •Switches for ignition, turn signals, hazards, and lights. •Bodywork in unfinished fiberglass. •Reclaimed ZF Steering rack / three segment column / new quick release hub / new sport steering wheel with horn button and universal shift knob. •Reclaimed suspension from a donor. •Reclaimed Yamaha R1 shocks. •17X7” wheels with 225/45-17 _____ summer _____ all season tires. •(2) Sport seats in fabric with adjustable sliders in customer choice of colors. •(2) 4 Point safety harness with quick release buckle. •Instrumentation kit with programmable shift lights. •20 Circuit universal wiring harness with weatherproof fuse panel and integrated relays. •Lighting package that includes headlight / taillight / turn indicators / license plate lighting. •Standard calipers with new slotted and drilled rotors. •Sport pedal set including three master cylinders (one clutch / two brake). Brake line kit with fittings. •Fuel tank / fuel pump / fuel filter / fuel lines (suitable for carbureted cars) – choose the delete option for fuel injected cars. •Drive shafts suitable for use with Porsche 901 trans. •2 side mirrors. •Battery holder (battery and alternator / battery wiring supplied by customer). •Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin for kit. This MCO will have all the security features required by all 50 states (prismatic ink, etc…) ADD / UPGRADE OPTIONS: 1. Powdercoat frame 2. Install floor pan 3. Removeable Windshield and frame. 4. Inboard suspension 5. New Single Adj. shocks with 175/275 springs 6. New QA-1 double adjustable shocks 7. Rear View Camera / Screen 8. Stereo bracket (Single DIN) 9. Speaker mounts (under dash) 10. Schroth DOT Harnesses 11. Parking Brake 12. Cup holder / Aux. 12V outlet 13. Poly suspension bushings in ___ Red ____ Black. 14. Sway bar set (wall thickness selected by buyer) 15. Rear Aero wing. DELETE OPTIONS: 16. Customer supplied wheels 17. Customer supplied tires 18. Seating delete 19. Instrumentation delete 20. Bodywork delete 21. Seat belt / harness delete 22. Lighting delete 23. Electrical harness delete 24. Brake system delete 25. Fuel pump / filter / hoses delete 26. Drive shafts delete |

2007 six speed
I just bought a 2007 STI six speed transmission from Garagedefeat in the classifieds on this site.
This is the one with the better gearing and the oil pump. It is being shipped directly to KY where the new mounting positions will be fabricated into my chassis. Later today I will take some pictures of the RA geared 5 speed that was shipped to All Pro Subaru so I can put it up for sale. I will also talk to Brandon about designing a custom locking spool to convert this 6 speed to 2WD since there currently is not a company offering this product. . . . and the part gathering continues |

there is a company that makes the spool. I just can't remember their name right now...
They make spools for both 5 and 6 speed trans. |

Great, think you can get me the info?
In my searches all I find are Bremar and SubaruGears, both of which only make the spool and block off plate for the 5 speed. Last edited by hipowernut; 12-21-2010 at 09:27 AM. |

Just spoke to rocketralley. Their spool will not fit the STI 6 speed transmission, only the Legacy Spec B 6 speed. But, they suggested that an easy solution would be to just weld together the two shafts. Any potential problems down the road for me if I were to weld these two shafts together to convert my trans to 2WD?
Also contacted a local PPG vendor to see if their RWD conversion spool will work on my 07 STI transmission, and if so at what price. SpeedForSale said it would take a day or so to confirm since PPG is in Australia. Last edited by hipowernut; 12-21-2010 at 04:08 PM. |

Send me your DCCD center and do it up...I could use a spare for when I do fwd and rwd burnouts
Welding should be fine. I welded the center diff on my 5-spd and it never failed...two diffs, 1 driveshaft, 1 DSS stage 5 axle and the tranny did though I wouldn't have gone 6-spd on this personally. Lightweight car with 'low' power, the lighter 5-spd wouldn't have issues. Besides, anyone who know's how transmissions are rated for vehicle use knows that it's based on tq loading and vehicle weight...thus load on the transmission. 300whp in an 1800lb kart would have been FTW with a 5-spd. Now you're tossing in a bigger, heavier and more expensive 6-spd. Adding weight to the rear of what will most likely already be a tail heavy mid engine setup. Just my $.02 from an automotive engineering standpoint, Micah |

For me it was the cost factor. I really didn't think the 5 speed would fail, given the light weight of the vehicle and the fact that I only will have two wheels in traction.
But, to add a LSD to the 5 speed, I figured why not go ahead and spend about the same amount of money and get a 6 speed that was stronger and already has a LSD. The 80 extra pounds doesn't really concern me, given the power I'll have at the wheels. Plus the fact that at 200lbs, I will act as a counterbalance being seated on just the other side of the engine. |

Speed in gears
Here are some interesting stats I calculated for my car using the 6 speed ratios, my final drive of 3.90 and my 25.1" diameter tires.
1st @ 6500 rpm = 34 mph 2nd @ 6500 rpm = 56 mph 3rd @ 6500 rpm = 82 mph 4th @ 6500 rpm = 109 mph 5th @ 6500 rpm = 128 mph 6th @ 6500 rpm = 165 mph Looks like I'll have to start in 2nd to get my best 0-60 times. |

Ok, here's a shot of the prototype car with the optional windshield frame being mocked up (which I will have on my car too). That's Bill, one of the MMW owners, in the drivers seat.
This prototype frame has been sent out for powder coating this week, which means when it returns the final assembly will begin. |
