Thought I would share this article. Some testing done with the new AMD Bulldozer chip. It definately seems it will be worth the wait!

I'd like to add that if you end up with a Sandy Bridge (current Intel processors, i.e. i3 2100) don't fret over ram speeds and just get the most economical/largest capacity. Sandy Bridge doesn't care much what speed your ram is.

Also, if you're ok with a large case, get a large case. I have a semi HTPC case and it is severely limiting my GPU choices.

I'm guessing it was supposed to be a joke about long lines at Fry's?

Well, I have TWO Fry's here, and the one right down the street never has too long of lines, so

BTW, I recommend browsing their full isle of computer cases. You can physically feel/see the difference in build quality, and look for a case with lots of fans or optional places to put fans and with good reviews online. But ya, make sure that you can get to the fan filters easily if they have them!

So you've used that service before?

I used Ibuypower about 8 years ago. It was the worst computer I've ever owned. I returned it within a week. That was a long time ago, but meh.

$9k system= bonkers.

Not sure how legit or what their cust. satisfaction rating is.

I bought a PC Gamer mag yesterday and stumbled upon this thread all after deciding I'd be building a rig for gaming(must be fate). Saw and ad for them in the mag, stuff on their site looks cool, gave me a nerdgasm. Way too rich for my blood though.

edit: here's the one that shot up to $9K after a few changes

It is ****. Motherboard is crap, proc is meh, PSU is overkill. GPU is ok but for that kind of money you could build your own cheaper/better.

I was always about PC gaming but the console guys did have an edge in that you can just sit down on the couch, turn on the console, and use your wireless controller to play almost instantly after turning it on. My newest PC build I did it with HTPC and gaming in mind. So now, the video card does HDMI to my audio receiver and my big screen right along with the Wii and the Xbox 360. With the SSD and just having to wake it from sleep mode when I want to use it, it is just as fast to get going as a console now. I also have an Xbox 360 controller adapter in it so I can use my wireless Xbox 360 controllers as well. That with the G25 wheel/pedals and a wireless keyboard/mouse on a table if I need it, it becomes the ultimate gaming system. And, graphics capabilities have surpassed that of the Xbox 360 now too. PC gaming is the win again.

Edit: My build might be slightly outside your $1000 budget, mainly because of the case I went with (it looks like home theater equipment) and the 1000W modular power supply. If you are interested in what I went with for components though, I can dig up the list and post it. In fact, I think I posted it in another thread. I'll see if I can find it.

Since I love putting media on other tv's, and have historically run VGA cables around in an ancient way... i'd like to add a solid HDMI out to my next PC to at least play HD video to an HDTV running as a second output or something.

I would be interested in your component choices, especially video card and motherboard/sound option. I don't yet have a high end receiver and my 42" Plasma is somewhat dated. It's not 1080p, only 1080i and 720p.... and I simply use the tv's speakers for the moment.

It certainly would seem to be easier to do it that way instead of using WMC and XBL to do the coverting/streaming. Ease of use isn't a big issue, I could make do with it simply acting like a second monitor for the moment. But given the outputs being HDMI from the computer, it should gel much better with a receiver system down the line. Playing games on the tv isn't a requirement, or even a concern for me currently.

1000W PSU? What are you running to require that kind of power?

Well, I started out with an upgrade combo from Newegg much like this combo:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboB...t=Combo.719507

I did replace the power supply with a better 1000W modular one though (SILVERSTONE ST1000-P) because the Rosewill one was a bit flaky at times under high load and I read multiple people having problems with Rosewill power supplies. I got an Adata 64GB SSD for the system drive. I went with a 1GB Galaxy 460GTX for the video card. That's mostly everything and I believe you are well below $1000.

For IceWilly: That card is a fairly high end card. They have plenty of lower end cards that have HDMI out. You don't need a sound card as the sound is handled by the video card via the HDMI. I think even a lot of motherboards have HDMI out right on the mobo these days.

Nothing at the moment. If I want to get stupid though, my motherboard can handle 3-way SLI. Then the power supply would be put to use. I mainly got it because I wanted a power supply that was modular so I didn't have a lot of cable clutter in the case (the case is fairly small inside).

By the time you decide to upgrade to 3-way SLI, your power supply will be dead anyway.
