Follow up on this all...and BTW...thanks for your thoughts!

So, the boy DID in fact graduate Sunday.

After a lot of consideration, he thinks he knows what he's going to do. He's going to look for a new impreza in the low 20's. He's thinking he'll pay half up front and finance the rest, so he can start building some credit history.

Seems like a solid place to start. Once he visits a dealership or two, we'll see how the plan holds together.

Meanwhile, the mustang is going to the barn for some needed rest. I think we're going to work together to pull the engine at some point as the rear main seems to be leaking profusely. Other than that though...the car's great. It's hard to believe it's pretty much 30 years old at this point.

Phil

If he needs a 4 door hatch, I wouldn't be wasting my time with a slow and boring Impreza. I'd be at the Mazda dealer picking up a Mazda3 Grand Touring 6MT hatchback. A far better car in every imaginable way.

I have advised him that his college car, a 1989 mustang, turns 30 this year...and it's a handful in snow or even heavy rain with the RWD. I've even offered him a space in my barn to retire that car to so he can still enjoy it when he wants to.

We have 2 subarus in the family now, an Outback and an old WRX my youngest kid is driving. I've been impressed with them and intend to discuss a subaru as a possible car for the older boy. With his new income, no kids, no student loans (in fact no debt period) he can afford about any subie. Not sure he would even consider buying new unless it makes good $ sense.

My question here is, if he would get into a used impreza or WRX, how many miles would you personally think would be the upper limit for a car he can daily drive for, say, 3 years where he will put another 50,000 miles on it over that time?

Would you also have a "year" in mind, or would you say that really any subaru under your x miles above should be good-to-go?

Any particular engines or transmissions you would avoid all together.

Personally I'm thinking any WRX with less than 70,000 miles currently would be a good choice...but maybe that's wrong? Also...just looking around, it's amazing how much people are asking for 2 year old WRX's...in some cases within a couple of grand of a brand new one...so I'm thinking if he goes used he needs to get one at least 4 or 5 years old. Thoughts?

Phil

Hold up, this awesome dude drives a Mustang right now and you want him to hop into a four door Aussie? No kids and no debt? I'd either keep that sweet ass classic Stang or buy a new one. He's got plenty of time to ruin his driving experience later in life.

C'mon pops, show the boy that you love him.

Glad to hear SOMEONE agrees.

The local dealer found the car he really wanted at another dealership in Illinois. He's supposed to pick it up today. He qualified for a 0% interest deal through Subaru Credit without need us to cosign (YEAH!)...and should be driving a new car later this afternoon.

It's not what I would have done...but I'm really proud of that too. He made his own decisions and he really wanted AWD. He (sigh) did not want a manual (sigh...ouch! CRINGE!), and he didn't want to break the bank with insurance payments.

The AWD/auto really limited his choices. And, you know, as I started this thread with...our family currently had 2 subarus, 3 fords, and a mazdaspeed. He still has the mustang. He just won't have it at his apartment. His biggest problem with that car is to keep me away from it...otherwise he's liable to come home and find a set of slicks and a supercharger mounted to it.

0% interest for a finance? I mean lease would make sense.

Edit: Never mind. Apparently that's a thing for new cars. Had no idea.

Phil, Without going back and checking I think this is Exactly what I suggested your son due back in the beginning of this thread. Although a six speed would be what I would get. The auto may get old. I have had more than a dozen mustangs and half as many subaru's. All good. Congrats on Graduating. Rick.

Just in case we need further proof of the not buying used and possibly abused...

Bought my 2005 WRX in November this last year with 144k miles. It had some mods, but nothing insane. Dude I got it from was selling because he wanted a Porsche. The car before was a trade-in. First oil change and I noticed about a quart and a half low. No biggie, turbo cars burn oil. 1200 miles later, 3 and a half quarts gone. Guess who needs a new short block 6 months in?

This guy...

I still adore the car and want to keep it forever, but... man.

Trust me I know that feeling. I got my 02 wrx bone stock from the original, 55 year old, owner. 130k miles, all maintenance done. 1500 miles later it eats it's valves and I'm swapping heads.

Excellent choice! It's great to hear about someone using a healthy dose of common sense when purchasing a car early in their career. I know I didn't when I was that age...

$100 his son will sell the thing within the year after dealing with one of the worst conceived CVTs on the market strapped to one of the lowest output 2.0 4 cylinders and saddled to a power sapping AWD system. Sure, 0-40mph might feel ok around town, but over time, a car guy will be beating his head against the wall with the lack of power and soul.

It's quite possible to be "an adult", have a fun and generally cheap car, and have a car that actually can perform and is enjoyable to drive. I've seen this story play out so many times on the various forums over the decades. A guy gets rid of his fun car because he's getting married, needs to be an adult, is having a baby, needs to "haul stuff", etc. He ends up getting rid of their fun car and gets something totally unsporting. He can't stand it after 6 to 12 months and ends up getting what he wanted in the first. In the end, it costs them significantly more money for them to get what they originally wanted.

Is a new WRX an option for him? The demographic of WRX owners are young guys and they're probably not going to be treating their car gently. I bought my 2015 WRX new and I'll be honest and say that I've beaten on it before just like everyone else has. Nobody is buying a WRX to drive it like a Toyota Prius. If used is an absolute must I'd stay away from modded cars because that's an absolute dead giveaway it's been beaten on. Maybe try and buy from a dealership? I think Carmax offers warranties on all their cars so they might be a good place to look at. Good luck!

If money isn’t the biggest struggle and he likes the car then look into the WRX/STi. Yes he will go fast and have fun it’s a Subie. He can put money into it or keep it stock there’s Unlimited potential. Great fun car but just know how to handle it behind the wheel.
