Default Spun rod bearing on dyno going IAG stage 2 shortblock

2014 Wrx hatch

Spun rod bearing on dyno on stock block (I knew it was going to happen eventually) and I've added a few reliability mods to my list so it doesn't happen again. Anything else I should ask the shop to do while they have the car and engine out? New block is being dropped in Monday so I have a little time to do last minute stuff.

End goal 350-400whp with similar torque reliably and I know I'll have to be looking at tranny next.

IAG stage 2 shortblock
Upgraded intake/exhaust valves
Upgraded titanium spring and retainers
Invidia equal length headers
Grimmspeed up pipe w ewg flange
FP Blue turbo
Grimmspeed downpipe
Perrin catback exhaust
Cobb SF Intake
Perrin turbo inlet hose
Cobb fuel pressure sensor kit
Turbosmart comp gate 40mm EWG
Grimmspeed electric boost control solenoid
Grimmspeed top mount intercooler
IAG TGV deletes
1050x injectors
Am 340 lph fuel pump
PST Carbon fiber drive shaft
Perrin light weight crank pulley
Koyo Radiator
Killer Bee oil pickup
Turbo blanket
Tein Flexz coilovers
Whiteline 22m front swaybar
Whiteline 22m rear swaybars
Whiteline endlinks and Bushings
Perrin pitch stop mount
Group N STI motors mounts
Group N STI transmission mounts
South bend stage 3 clutch
Enkei RPF1 17X8
Firestone Indy 500

Looks like a pretty nice and comprehensive mod list, if you have it readily available near you I’d consider throwing in an ethanol sensor for flex fuel. Would definitely help you hit those power goals with less stress on the engine IMO. Please post up your dyno results in the end!

Yeah the nearest ethanol is a 45min drive or it would have been on the top of my list. If I had a garage, I would have ordered a drum but idk how my HOA would respond to me keeping ethanol on the property. The break in period is gonna suck, ill definitely post up dyno numbers after break in though.

I'd say you should get an AOS on the car. I'd also ask what oil pump is on the car, whether it has been deburred, etc.

Seems like there was some sort of oiling issue, to begin with, for it to spin a bearing.

Just to be comprehensive ... what was replaced AFTER the spun bearing block? Oil cooler, turbo disassembled and cleaned, etc? If it were me, I'd want to be 100% confident that every nook and cranny of the heads, etc. were clean as a button.

Good list. Glad we can be apart of it!

Assuming you'll be replacing most tired OEM parts like oil pump, water pump, etc...?

TGV and air pump delete are the big ones to do while the engine is out. Consider the Getadomtune cylinder 4 cooling kit; cheap insurance at this point in your build.

Ah yeah, I did have the IAG AOS installed right before the dyno session. I wish I got it earlier but yeah I have the v2 street version.

Yeah they sent the heads to a machine shop to have them fixed and replace with new valves and stuff. All new stuff besides the heads which are being refinished or whatever they do at a machine shop. Replacing oil pump, pickup as well.

I believe so, I know I'm replacing the oil pump, just have to call them and inquire about seeing if they were replacing the water pump as well! I believe they ordered me a an upgraded oil pan from you guys as well!

Yeah I have to call them about this as well. Thanks for the reminder about the c4 cooling mod. Tgvs are already replaced though!

who cares what the HOA thinks.
People can store gasoline and fuel oil why shouldn't you be able to store ethanol

Fellow New Englander. Where did you get your car tuned? VEMS is quite reputable up here in VT. Also that mod list is pretty good for a daily. Good balance of response and power with an FP Blue.

May I ask what you meant by this? I’m new to the WRX world and seeing a lot of the spun bearings stories.

Sounds like a great build though. Exciting times ahead! Interested to see what she puts down

Stock rod bearing clearances are a bit tight from the factory, so with that in mind, if you're really pushing the stock motor you can encounter a failure.

Some might say that if you change your oil and check it frequently, you can avoid it, up to a certain point.

Thanks for your reply. Yes this is what I’ve been reading. I thought maybe something indicated to him this would happen or if it’s something inevitable within certain years.

I’m looking to pick one up but a bit wary now hearing these stories. I guess good care is what makes the difference so important to thoroughly check the car’s history.

Anyway sorry for derailing. Looking forward to the results!

Right!! you wouldn't even have to put it in it. You could cut the bottom out then cut down the side and wrap it around the drum.

I've owned the car since mile 1. My mistake was that I relaxed on consistently checking the oil after a while and at some point there must have been a point where my car had oil starvation. My shop said all it takes is a scratch or roughness (on the bearing) from lack of oil to spin a bearing eventually. They said that the pressure under load must have caught on the bearing imperfection and caused the damage.

Not 100% if I describe what they said correctly from memory but I think thats what they said.

Yeah I'm excited about the results but now I have to prepare for tranny repairs just in case. I am fairly easy on the car so it should be okay for a while hopefully.

Ended up with 331whp/316wtq with peak power pulling all the way to redline so it feels great with no dropoff.

Went conservative with 20lbs of peak boost on the fp blue as my TMIC was starting to heatsoak and they said it started to pull some timing on last runs. Im planning to go back for a retune maybe middle of winter and see to go a bit more aggressive after doing some heat management mods as I want to keep my tmic.
