EJ22 Swap - No Spark... no ground for fuel pump relay??
I've swapped an '94 EJ22 into my '86 Wagon.
The wiriing was prepared according to Kennedy Engineerings FAQ for swapping this motor into a Vanagon. These swaps are similar as both are having the entire motor harness swapped in, as the vehicle didn't have fuel injection or an ecu to begin with. Ok. So the Main relay clicks over like it should when I turn the key. Problem #1 The fuel pump relay is getting ign on power, and power from the ecu. However, the ecu is failing to ground the relay, which is how it turns it on. By jumpering it to ground though, we have verified that it works. Every ground pin has a good ground signal at the ECU, most going straight back to motor. The motor and trans are suffeciently grounded my 2 ground straps and a large 0 gauge starter ground wire (to the battery). Problem #2 None of the 4 plugs are sparking (verified by plugging in a spare spark plug and grounding it while cranking) I've tried 2 different igniters, and 2 different coil packs. The coilpack gets power, even while cranking. We've done continuity tests on everything in the engine bay, it all goes back to the ecu or/and required spots. Thoughts?

did u make sure to connect the wire that goes hot when the igintion is on the start position to the ecu? if not the ecu will think it's off..and so no ground for fuel or pulse for spark...

When you turn your ignition on does the main power relay click clossed ?
Do you have the diode in line to provide the power to the system ? You say you have tested all the wires and they run to where the are suppose to, does your ignitor have power to it ? With ignition on does the coil have power ? It sounds very much like you have forgotten to power up the correct wires in the loom after you have modified it. I would get hold of an ECU Pinout and check all the powers. There are a few which you need to rejoin after you strip out all the stuff you don't need to run the 22. If you tell me what model ECU and year engine you have I can tell you which wires you should have connected to your ignition circuit. |

Update:
After toiling with the harness for a couple of weeks, I decided to try a second harness. Because things had been changed so many times to the first harness, I could no longer verify that it was intact where it needed to be. The second harness was tried before stripping it down, and again... didn't work. However we got different problems, and an error code... No cam sensor signal error. After 10 minutes of quick looking, we found the pulley's to be on the wrong sides... thus the pulley with the marks for the cam sensor was on the side without the cam sensor. After fixing this, we tried the first harness again... but to no avail, it didn't start. I decided it to be easier and start from scratch on the second harness than try and "fix" the first. Before trimming, I hooked it up, and got the engine to run for a couple seconds. This cemented by belief in the second harness, however I doubted myself at stripping it down again. In steps ShawnW from the USMB. He stripped my harness down, and labeled some key wires. When I got it back I hooked it up and bingo! Engine start, engine run, car drive! These last couple of months i've been doing little things, like getting the tach to work, cleaning up the engine bay install... And just when I thought I was so close! A new problem. Currently I have a problem keeping a battery charged overnight :-/ Even bought a new battery (redtop optima) and it did the same thing. So i've been trying to track down where the draw is coming from and its a long process... especially since I don't have an AMP meter, and have to talk someone into letting me borrow one. Thanks for all the interest! |
