SUBARU NAMES NEW ALL-ELECTRIC SUV "SOLTERRA"
- SUV is Brand's First Global All-Electric Vehicle -
Solterra developed as a joint-venture between Subaru and Toyota
Built on the all-new e-SUBARU Global Platform
Engineered to be a safe, versatile, and capable Subaru SUV
Scheduled to go sale in the U.S., Canada, China, Europe, and Japan in 2022

Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA) today announced that it will name its new full-electric SUV Solterra. Designed as a joint venture between Subaru and Toyota, the Solterra features a new, dedicated all-electric platform named the e-SUBARU Global Platform. The joint venture combines Subaru's expertise in all-wheel drive technology with Toyota's vehicle electrification technology.

The name Solterra was created using the Latin words for "Sun" and "Earth" to represent Subaru's commitment to deliver traditional SUV capabilities in an environmentally responsible package.

To create the all-new e-SUBARU Global Platform, Subaru engineers worked to bring together the brand's all-wheel drive capability, superior driving dynamics and world leading passive safety in a versatile, dedicated EV platform. The result is a technologically advanced full-electric SUV that is also a truly capable and durable Subaru SUV. The Solterra joins Subaru's award-winning line-up of SUVs, including the Outback, Forester, Crosstrek and Crosstrek Plug-in Hybrid. The Solterra will go on sale in 2022.

This is an interesting vehicle.... for sure. I wonder how much range they are targeting...It will be AWD no doubt, and will have eyesight. Will it have the 8.7" of ground clearance. If they can give this 300miles of range, man... they will sell a few. Subaru is full of this kind of cars target audience. Lets hope it does well.

I like those headlights.

Do we know if they're going to have "eyesight"? Being on a shared platform with Toyota, I wonder if they're going to have independent driver assistance, or if they will pick one system and go with it.

Hopefully Eyesight. 2 cameras are better than 1. The Toyota bZ4X shown at Shanghai has a mono-camera (I assume still from Denso). https://www.carscoops.com/2021/04/to.../#lg=1&slide=2

Then again, the 2022 BRZ and GR86 have Eyesight. So who knows if they will switch to Toyota ADAS, but that would hurt Eyesight going forward.

eh. System turns off in heavy rain. None of my other cars have ever done that, including my Toyota's. At this point, I trust Toyota's system more.

Even Tesla will require the driver to take over in extreme conditions. I am not saying Eyesight is at Tesla's level, but vision, needs, well, vision. I would still prefer 2 or 3 cameras (Tesla) vs. Mobileye/Denso/etc mono-camera.

Driver taking over from autonomous driving is a lot different than emergency braking turning off because cameras don't work in heavy rain.

My question, is how will Subaru handle "Symmetrical" AWD branding.

Electric motors on each axle tend to be transverse, which would offset the motor/transmission weight distribution, and therefore negate the Symmetrical branding.

Haha yeah, will it have X-Mode and Hill Descent braking?...

It can definitely have X-Mode w/ Hill Descent as that is 99% electronics and the VDC/TCS is the star of the show in an EV. Lightning (do I need Ford's permission?) quick changes to the motors/wheels allows for increased control in low traction situations. Also, the ability, if they choose, to sleep the front motor for increased efficiency, a la Tesla Model 3/Y.

Yes, but it will be a little more complicated using a combo of regen and friction braking. But I am sure they will figure it out.

What will be really interesting with this new model is the battery. What composition and range? There was talk of Toyota going with solid state. That would really be leading edge.

Toyota has been sitting on this for a long time, so lots of time (and money) to come up with something new and good. It will have 800V (ultra fast charging), and energy density (kWh per lb) should be very high.

Do we know what the platform is shared with? Like, is it an existing vehicle from toyota or a new bespoke one like with the brz and 86 that isnt on the roads already?

e-TNGA is Toyota's brand-new EV platform, which is being used by Subaru for the Solterra and Toyota for the bZ line. It is a modular platform that can be adjusted based on the type of vehicle, number of cells required, etc.

Ditto. I'm holding my next purchase until I know more about X and when/what it will be available on. And I am getting antsy. My cars are OLD. I was considering the Solterra; but, not if it has that tacked on screen(don't care the size. don't like tacked on). But, in reality, I won't get it with it not being on a Subaru platform. Unless they can convince me it was primarily developed by Subaru......

a first model year EV developed by Subaru ... what could go wrong?

have they even worked the kinks out of the EJ engine yet, after how many years?

This killed my Netscape browser on Windows 3.1.1 and overloaded the silicon chips on my Diamond 112Kbps Modem (with Shotgun technology ). My POTS line was hot to the touch from all the bits going across the wire.
