![]() ok so I've been doin a little bit of reasearch for the best way to break in my motor. I will be running NA for the first 1,000-1500 miles to get the rings to seat the best they can.
I have not decided which breakin method to go with yet though... A: Balls to the wall ( get the rings to WEAR ! ) b: take her easy... (it will all happen eventualy, and is easier on her....? ) BUT I have not been able to find the best oil to use... I picked up some Penzoil 10-30 cuz it was on sale, I plan on filler her up....startin her up and fixing any leaks or whatnot...then changing the oil. Then again after 100 miles, then again after 500,1000,1500 and then return to normal 3k miles... BUT is it a bad thing to change brands/oil weight once I have picked one?? I have also heard Rotella-T is the best to use... whata u guys think ?? eventually I will be swithing over to full Mobil 1 synthetic....

![]() I have a built MR2 that I did a hard break-in on. Everything sealed perfectly. I used super cheap 10-40 penzoil dino oil for break-in.

![]() I just went through this issue myself at 7000 miles on CP pistons regular 2.0L even drained all the synthetic and threw in back in the motor to be sure theres no oil loss so far 1900 miles past the 5,600 mile mark and it looks good i do kinda go into boost alot.
Started out with 10w30 for just under 300 miles went to Rotella 15w40 for nearly 2500 miles then was tuned at 5k miles on a mix of pennz 10w30 and one quart of 10w40 all Dyno oil. I stayed under 5000 rpms as much as i could for the breakin i did hit 128mph in 5th gear at 273 miles once. ![]() |

![]() I ran some cheap-o 5w-30 for the first 50 miles, then switched to Rotella T 15w-40, as recommended by Ron @ Axis. Currently at 600 miles and regularly pushing 5-10psi up to 6000RPM.

![]() cool some good info here...
I think I'll use my cheapo penzoil 10 30 initialy, then again till 100 miles...then switch over to that Rotella T 15-40 |

![]() I am gonna stick with rotella-t 15w40 on the next motor. But I may try an SAE 30wt oil for the initial startup and first couple miles (as per Cobb guidelines).

![]() How many hours/miles break in period?
The break-in period is for the rings. The generally recommended break-in period is 1000 miles. Synthetic or regular oil? Regular for the duration of the break-in period, then the owner is free to use any type they desire. First oil change should be performed after how many hours/miles? After 1000 miles and before the dyno tune. Oil weight for before and after break in period? 5W-30 More frequent oil changes with new pistons? Other than the break-in period, no. ![]() shooting into the breeze, but I think it would be because 5w-30 has a bit less shear protection allowing the piston rings to seal better against the cylinder walls which is what break-in is all about.

Nasty, quit stressing about this, put some decent non-synthetic oil in it, change it a few times, lay off high boost but give it some rev rolls, and break the darned thing in. At some point, you either have faith the builder put together a nice, tight motor...or you don't. Either way, get 'er done. The only thing that ever concerns me is using the proper weight - and only the builder can answer that because only he knows what bearing tolerances he set. Ask him, then get on with it and go have some fun. |

![]() Like I said in my email to you.
I would suggest to use 10/30 valvoline non-synthetic. During break in, you change your oil well before the oil has a chance to break down. This is why the exact choice of oil (like Fly mentioned) is not as important. - J. |
