Default I'm moving to Cincinnati this weekend, need some advice.

I'm moving to Cincinnati this weekend from Richmond, Virginia. I'm basically moving out there blind, so I was wondering if anyone in the area could give me tips or feedback on some local stuff. I really don't even know what's available out there as far as services. I spent a few days there a year ago, but that's it. I'm pretty stuck between a rock and a hard place and I'm desperate, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I need a new bank. My bank is Mid-Atlantic area only. I would like some opinions on the different branches out there. The only ones I know are 5/3 and PNC, but I don't really know anything about them.

Cable services. We have Comcast and Cavalier here, I don't even know what's available out there.

I'm going to be living in Norwood. I haven't been in that area that I know of, so if anyone around there could point out which areas/streets to avoid, or which grocery stores are closest (or which grocery stores to avoid, ha) or any other points of interest, it'd be really helpful.

I have a dog and a cat. I'd like to find a dog park that's relatively close, a decent vet that's relatively inexpensive, and any locally owned pet supply stores that carry "better" food than the big chains.

Last but really the most immediately important, I need to find cheap moving help. Craigslist seems to be turning up a lot of small businesses that have a minimum fee. I have less than 10 pieces that I can't move myself, and only 3 or 4 of them that I can't really lift at all. If anyone sees fliers around campus or the newspaper for cheap labor, I can probably afford up to $50/per person for 2 guys. I just dumped 2 grand into the actual move, so my pockets are pretty spare. I'm basically paying my friends for their help here in frozen wild game, beer, and half-drunk bottles of liquor.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Saturday or Sunday? We're having an install day this Saturday, but you might be able to wrangle some extra bodies on Sunday. Have Charge call people - he knows folks.

Cable = Time Warner or satellite are your only choices.

high speed internet = Time Warner or Cincinnati Bell DSL (I'd say CinBell since I, and you, know people that work there).

Banks --> I use a credit union, so I'm not sure. PNC seems bigger than 5th/3rd

Don't really know Norwood that well, but I believe you're close to one of the few 24 hour animal hospitals (south east of you on Redbank Rd.). PetsMart is a common chain around here with a couple of different locations. I can't speak about dog parks.

Like I said, use Charge - he knows enough of us.

I can't really do that, but thanks for the other info. Like I said, I probably wouldn't have posted here, but I'm pretty desperate.

Come on guys, you can help her out for the morning part before or after the move.
I know not everybody is going to the install day. So I'll see what I can come up with. What I need to know is if you need help in the morning or the afternoon, I have some plans on Saturday myself and will need to ajust if need be.

Ok so far I have myself plus 2 other guys to help, maybe a 3rd and my g/f.

I need to know where in Norwood and what time.

Do you have a place to stay?

My wife and I have got an apartment building just north of Norwood that has a 1br vacancy.

The places to avoid should be pretty obvious. You'll see nice streets, along with some not-so-nice ones. Basically, Montgomery Rd is active enough feel comfortable on, along with the streets immediately around Floral.

Jordan covered most of your options.

For groceries, you've pretty much got Meijer and Kroger. Both have decent selections, but the (local to you) Meijer is only like 3 years old, closer, and usually a tiny bit cheaper.

I'd just like to add one more bank - Chase. It's the banking arm of JPMorgan, so it's pretty decently sized. 5/3 is more regional, and PNC is to, but it's slightly larger. All three are customers of where I work, so you'd be doing me a favor whichever one you pick.

I'm not sure what my Saturday looks like yet, but if I'm not moving servers I might be able to help.

Thanks guys, you're all very kind, but I'm not actually moving my stuff on the weekend, just my body. The packing place doesn't deliver on the weekends so they won't even be delivered until the 2nd. Until then I'm going to be brown-bagging it and crashing in a sleeping bag at my apartment w/ my pets.

Spanner, I wish I'd known that before, ha. I did manage to get a place just under the wire, though. My app was approved yesterday. It's on Carter Ave. It can't be any more ghetto than where I live now, so I'm happy about that.

Thank you for all of the info and offers, guys!

I need a new bank. My bank is Mid-Atlantic area only. I would like some opinions on the different branches out there. The only ones I know are 5/3 and PNC, but I don't really know anything about them.

I use US Bank...5/3rd is good too. I like US Bank because of the free internet billpay which means I haven't cut a personal check in a year or so.

Cable services. We have Comcast and Cavalier here, I don't even know what's available out there.

Time Warner is pretty much the only cable here...you can also get Satellite to varying degrees of success.

I'm going to be living in Norwood. I haven't been in that area that I know of, so if anyone around there could point out which areas/streets to avoid, or which grocery stores are closest (or which grocery stores to avoid, ha) or any other points of interest, it'd be really helpful.

Do you really have to live in Norwood? No offense to anyone here but it is pretty ghetto there other than a small splotch of it that is less ghetto. Mostly industrial areas mixed with small houses. My wife and I started out in Blue Ash and now live in Mason. Is there a specific reason why you need to be in Norwood? I guess it may be too late at this point since you've probably signed a lease.

I have a dog and a cat. I'd like to find a dog park that's relatively close, a decent vet that's relatively inexpensive, and any locally owned pet supply stores that carry "better" food than the big chains.

My wife and I have 2 dogs and 2 cats. Near you there is this awesome Daycare/Kennel called The Pet Spot...they sell stuff. You can also go to Hyde Bark which is in Hyde Park Square that is the ritzy place. The closest dog park is at Mount Airy Park...it is a really big and good one.

Last but really the most immediately important, I need to find cheap moving help. Craigslist seems to be turning up a lot of small businesses that have a minimum fee. I have less than 10 pieces that I can't move myself, and only 3 or 4 of them that I can't really lift at all. I'm sure we can all drop by right quick to help...that many items will take like an hour tops.

Yeah, I basically have no time to find any other place and I'm pretty happy with this one. I can't really afford much because my current place has put me in the poor house, and this apartment has a fenced in yard for my dog to play in and central air and on-site laundry. It's in a big old house rather than a complex, which is more "me". It's also fairly close to work, which is up near the Kenwood Mall.

Seriously, I'm in a complex right now that is pretty scary sometimes. I'm afraid to walk my dog at night because I've been followed by a car without its lights on, my ex's car was stolen from the parking lot, my neighbor's car was broken into, everyone I share my building with is either a crackhead, alcoholic, illegal immigrant, or the one nice maintenance guy, and I'm in one of the good buildings. If you set foot outside of the confines of the neighborhood, you run the risk of either being accosted by one of the many crazy people that roam the streets (has happened to me every time I go out there!) or being mistaken for a prostitute, which happened to my friend who was waiting for the bus. Anything is better than this place.

Errr, I dunno. I haven't even seen the place in person, just a couple of photos on craigslist. It's on Carter Ave., between Montgomery Rd. and Lower Millcrest Park, a couple of blocks north of Williams Ave. I have no idea if those are identifiable at all, lol.

^^^Ah ok nvm then...you're in that splotch of Norwood that is ok.

There are a bunch of places closer to Kenwood though when your lease expires. I know because my wife and I rented near there because she was working near there. I can think of like 5 Apt COmplexes in that general area and 2 of them are pretty cheap.

Kenwood was just a little too far North for my tastes, I prefer being closer to the city. It wasn't my first choice for places to work, but it was the only opening they had for my job position, so there you go. I hate complexes, too. They make me feel like I'm living in a prison.

I did just get some good news, though. I had a $450 budget to fix my car and get it ready for the drive and it only cost $150 because old Bessie's apparently not quite ready to die yet. Talk about tempting fate, driving an SVX 500 miles when you just crossed over the 100k mile mark on the odometer. She's a bit of a Frankenstein (epoxy putty is our friend) but I'm pretty sure she runs on as much will power as I do. Hooray for magic cars.

That's the other thing. What am I going to need to do at the DMV/for taxes? Here we have state inspections, registration for the state, county stickers, no smog testing, but we have to pay personal property taxes. How much hullabaloo do you guys have to deal with?

Kenwood is also a little more expensive.

Being close to the city isn't really all that much to shoot for, here.

You're not more than about 15 minutes from work, and going to be driving in the opposite direction from most of the traffic.

Your old complex sounds like a real hole. I don't think the bad parts of Norwood are quite that bad...

Not sure what you have to do at the DMV, but here's the fee schedule: http://bmv.ohio.gov/vehicle_registration/reg_fees.htm
No smog testing (anymore), and once you've got Ohio plates, you should be able to renew them online.

BMV is pretty easy to get done in like an hour if you go at an off hour like 2:00 PM. You go to the one side for them to look at your car then you go to the other side with the signed form and pay for your plates and stickers. It's cheap too compared to most states I've lived in...I think I paid like $50 or something.
