![]() I'll add that they never bring that kind of money with that kind of miles on it. They'll try and lowball you bigtime because if they were to give you $5k-5500 for it they'll lose their ass when they try and sell it at the auction.

![]() Thanks for the replies
Ad says it's a one-owner car, I'm going to take a look tmrw. If I don't get offered a good trade value I might just keep my 02 and offer cash for the 06 and see what kind of deal I can get. |

![]() WELL I'M THE SALES MANAGER AT A USED CAR LOT AND I'M TELLING YOU THAT YOU'RE WRONG. CASH IS ALWAYS KING. YOU'LL GET A BETTER DEAL IF YOU WALK IN AND WRITE THEM A CHECK FOR THE ENTIRE BALANCE OF THE CAR. SAVES THEM A LOT OF HEADACHE AND HASSLE, AS WELL AS THE FIGHT TO GET PAID BY THE FINANCE COMPANY. |

![]() I feel like the sales price of that car should be around 15k
I recently paid 18k (actually may have been 17) at a dealership for an 06mwagon with 35k miles, leather and immaculate condition. My research told me I was paying too much but I went for it because I was in a hurry and it was exactly what I wanted. There is no way I would pay nearly as much for a car with less options and 2x as many miles. Looks nice, but I think there should be significant negotiation room on the price... |

![]() just because you worked at one dealership does not mean you know how things are ran, and if you know that they were a shady dealership then why talk about how they did things.

![]() LOUD NOISES!
Serious note: Looks clean. And personally I'd never trade in a car to a dealership. Sell the bugeye wagon via private sale. Private sale you could maybe get $6-7k pretty easily. |

![]() thanks for the heads-up, I won't even bother asking for a trade-in price for my bugeye. I was hoping to trade it as it needs a clutch (original still holding at 125K miles). I'll do the clutch then sell it privately.
The asking price for the 06 is $14K btw. They've dropped the price from the crazy $17K they were asking. Even so, is it going to be twice as good as my $7k bugeye? Last edited by monkfish; 02-08-2010 at 02:41 PM. |

So if you have two people buying the exact same car and for the same price one paying cash and one financing, the dealership has the opportunity to make more on the person financing than the one paying cash. In addition to that, the person financing is more likely to purchase a warranty and such as they don't have to come up with that extra money and pay out of pocket on the spot for it. There are also many other reasons that financing is better for the dealership as well.... Also, a manufacturer will usually pay some extra money for using their bank and using they rate they provide (ie not bumping it)....So for example, you go to a Subaru dealership and have a customer use Subaru Motor Finace to financing their new vehicle. If Subaru Motor Finance offers a 2.9% rate and you use that rate, you will get a small kickback....not quite as big as if you bump the rate, but it's still better than nothing....which a dealership doesn't get when a person pays cash. So due to the opportunity of making more money with a person financing, the dealership is more likely to pass some of that on to the customer. Now if you work for a tote-the-note lot, that might be a different story as they don't always have banks they use that pay them.....in addition, a lot of them may do in-house financing which while they can charge interest, they will not see all of that money until 48-60-72 months later when the note is paid in full....whereas if a person pays cash, they get their money right away. Sorry for going OT. |

![]() tote a note/buy here pay here lots are also in the repo biz. there get a down payment that pays at least half of their investment, then repo the car and sell it again, when the loser doesn't pay. unless they are hard up for cash, these places want to finance the car, with their steep down payments, high prices and high interest (the interest is just gravy above all of the down payments).
lots of people sell cars, but differing objectives mean differing methods and models. personally, i have found very good deals at new car dealers. offer and substantiate a fair price, and you may be suprised at the success rate. it also helps if you can identify repaints and other flaws that can be denied to the casually buyer. when in doubt, pay for a pre-purchase inspection by someone you trust. kbb.com, edmunds.com, nada.com all give pricing guides. |
