Default Best Bang for Buck Suspension Mod After Coilovers and Swaybars?

So im at the point now, where i have BC Coilovers, and Whiteline Swaybars w/ kartboy Endlinks, i want to get more response out of the car, prevent understeer and have better turn in feel.

what is everyone's opinion on the best Modifcation, other then better coilovers ? Ive toyed with the idea of extended balljoints or front control arm bushings..

keep in mind this car sees the track, i don't care about street performance, the roads here go in straight lines =(.

if you're going to tell me to search stay out of my thread, id like to have an informative discussion on this.

Alex

bushings. - all of them.

bushings alone will have more effect on response and steer-in that everything you listed combined. I know from experience.

I noticed a HUGE improvement from bushings alone...

I did
Group-N engine/tranny mounts/Pitch stop
Whiteline Steering rack bushings
Group-N tophats (you already have upgraded these w/ the coilovers)
Whiteline ALK
Front lower control arm bushing
Rear lateral link bushings (I did whiteline adjustable links)
Rear trailing arm bushings
Rear diff. mount bushings
Rear subframe outrigger bushings
Rear subframe lockdown bolts
Front/Rear shifter mount bushings

the basic principle is

Harder=better=less streetable
Metal>Hard_plastics>polyurethane>rubber

I dont know what exactly i mean by hard plastics but I'd know them if I saw them. basically lumping everything between polyurethane and metal into that category. stiff enough for improvement but ductile/elastic/plastic enough not to crack.

Better mod than anything is driver education. Go to a track day.

And lots of bushings.

This was my favorite mod after swaybars, should work with your 06 and cost you about $30 plus a wheel alignment.

Along with this stuff, I am surprised nobody has mentioned getting Fender Braces yet (unless I missed it). There have been quite a few people stating they noticed an immediate difference when they installed Fender Braces and wished that was one of the first suspension mods they would have done.

They made a difference and are worth getting but it wasn't that noticeable. Something I would do further down the line.

yeah, im ordering fender braces and a master cylinder brace as well. just was wondering what should be next as far as the suspension, but from what everyone is saying, it looks like upgrading the bushings is the best, so i will be doing that most likely.

ALK is also something ive been looking into, does anyone know if its legal in Redline street class? i know in AutoX it automatically puts you into SM.

I don't have the rule book in front of me, but I am pretty sure ALK is not legal in SM.

The ALK is questionable for RTA street class. I would go with KCA375 if you are concerned.

Caster up to 7* is awesome on this car. Another mod if you haven't done it is to switch out your alm control arms for the 04-06 USDM STI alm control arms. An instant +2* of caster difference.

Oh and on the subject of shimming the alm control arm outward. Don't do it too much as it flexes the front control bushing and will cause it to break down quickly.

i actually never knew the aluminum ones on the 06 wrx were any different then the sti, is it the way the arm is designed or is it a mount or bushing thats different?

well i found this in the redline street class rulebook.

4-6.1 Modifications to the OEM control arms are permitted to allow for the adjustment
of camber and caster.
4-6.2 No changing of OEM suspension pick up points is allowed. On strut type
suspensions the outer end of the lower control arm may be adjusted a
maximum of 1".

so thats a ......... no? or is the ALK kit within that 1"

definitely will do something to add caster, from what everyone has been saying that makes a significant difference.

Alex, as everyone suggested here I would do bushings/motor and tranny mounts and an ALK. I have all Kartboy bushings, the front and rear shifter and subframe outrigger bushings and it made the car feel a litter firmer.

=D
It's the way the arm is designed. The '04-'06 USDM STi arms pushes the front wheels forward and that increases the castor.

As TiC mentioned there are other tricks too...
