That is because the GR sedan was hideous. The GR hatch on the other hand . What a sexy shape that car has. Nom Nom Nom.

I completely disagree with the comment about the GR sedan, I happen to own one and quite like it. I really like both the GR era sedan and hatch. I am more inclined to the GR cars than the model after of which I owned an Impreza not a WRX but substantially the same car minus wide fenders and turbo motor.

In any event we shall see what happens with the new car in the coming weeks.

Regardless of what people think about the looks of the GR, they had the worst interior of any Subaru ever. Solid had plastic door panels and dashes... Bleh.

I just realized that with the plastic fenders, it's gonna be hard for the stance bois to get their slammed fitment on

I wonder if this will be the last generation of these cars. Given the Impreza doesn't sell anymore, maybe they are testing the waters for a future of performance CUV's. The moment we saw photos of these cars with the SUV wheel arches I said that the Crosstrek was clearly the primary emphasis for this vehicle and with the plastic cladding it's looking more and more that they are looking at moving away from the entry level sedan/hatchbacks that are their slowest sellers. Really they could probably move more overall vehicles if they canned the Impreza and Legacy and used those lines to build more Crosstreks and Outbacks.

I don't caress my interior as I drive down the road. I don't care what it's made of. The GR was my favorite interior soo far......until my next STI. I really like the new interior(Levorg).

I'm pretty sure I've read people wishing the Crosstrek had more power or there was a turbo model etc.. be careful what you wish for then lol

Would buy a Crosstrek like yesterday if it was available with FADIT, even if it CVT only. This new WRX is going to be a huge hit for Subaru, even more so than the VA.

I was going to say how my gut reaction on seeing the teaser was instantly to find anyone who mentioned a "turbo Crosstrek" being fine instead of a WRX over the years and throw Legos under their feet. *edit* ^^^

Still, I'm thankful it's clearly got no other CUV pretenses going on it seems. They're setting me up to bite on the new STI. I'm dead in their sights now. So many here I think will end up feeling like they HAVE to buy it and it will all be the product of this nefarious campaign they're running.

I guess if you just get a lift kit for it then you'll be all set with a "Crosstrek XT".

Looking at it that way, if the STI is a complete bust then maybe I'll just lift a 2022 WRX Limited. I just paid off my Impreza today, so I'm on the hunt for anything fun, new and interesting.

But keeping a plastic-clad WRX "Crosstrek" low to the ground is a HUGE no-no in my book.

Yeah, people wanted a Crosstrek WRX NOT a WRX Crosstrek.

2015 the Focus RS came out and beat the sti and Wrx to an oblivion. The Ford was and is the better car out of the box.
2016 the civic type R comes out and once again the Subaru can't keep up. Even the S209 version.
2016 VW releases a mid year refresh to the golf R and the MK7.5 is now also faster than the Sti
2018 MY Subaru decides to change around the sti , new differential or whatever garbage they did. It's now a 5.5 0-60 car and the Wrx is faster. I raced a friend with a 18 sti that was stock in my stock 16 sti and I obliterated him by 2-3 car lengths.
The type R has been bashing the sti for years ago in all performance data, besides snow or ice, which isn't used in car comparison tests. My point is this car has had more competition in the time since the evo has left than it did when it first came out in 2004, and they still can't get up to speed with other manufacturers. Yaris GR is a faster and better car as well from what the Europeans and brits are saying.
So what's subarus excuse? They release a teaser, with what looks like a total POS with a 6k redline, cheap plastic fender moldings because they didn't give it true fender flares like they've done for 30 years, and ugly orange paint. Orange looks good on shelbys, M3's, corvettes***8230;not subarus or tuner cars.
So, this time I think Subaru has made a mistake , and it won't be like last time where they get bought up anyways

Notice I said specifically the WRX and not the STI? The WRX is a sub-30k car if you don't mind the base. The Civic Type R and the Golf R are 45k or more now. When you compare the WRX to other sub-30k sports sedans and hatches it's pretty great. The competition isn't doing much down there these days (you could argue the GTI and the Civic Si are better daily drivers, they probably are).

With regards to the STI I agree with you 100%. Which is why I got a Focus RS and then a Civic Type R instead of an STI lol. I do like the current STI but it's definitely dated compared to other cars at the price. To be fair though the GR WRX was faster 0-60 than the GR STI.

We'll see what happens with this new model. I just got a 2021 WRX with the future plan of getting the new STI when it comes out in a year or two. So I'm hopeful but I also wouldn't be shocked if Subaru screws it all up either.

It will probably sell well because these cars have achieved cult status like the Camry where it sells regardless of how good it is. Still I'm curious if the typical WRX buyer will be ready to trade his flat brimmed hat for hiking boots. Time will tell and I was open to getting into a non-EJ STI if the performance was bumped up but if it's got cheap plastic cladding like the WRX I'm out regardless of how improved the rest of the car is. I wouldn't buy an SUV for it's looks but looks matter for a car like this and I don't want my STI to look like an Outback Wilderness.

I feel the same about considering it. The STI that is for me. I’m eager to get back on that horse again. Although this time it would be more subtle (wingless) and I don’t fancy doing any mods at all. I have a baby on the way so it will be a hard sell on the wife lol

nevertheless, we don’t live out West anymore. My Foz is hooked up with a lift and off-road tires. I’m not hitting mountain trails anymore for the next 2-3 years. Depending where we move next, my goal would be a fun car and beater rig.

So, trade Foz for a new STI for the manual fun car and also one of the last manual ICE cars (which I hope to keep forever and increase value). Then, for outdoorsy stuff, I can always just get an old Land Cruiser or 4Runner and I’m good.

I have other vehicles for cargo, k9 transport, towing, etc. But I'd rock the F out of a Levorg STi. It would totally piss off some of my friends because they'd be on about you could have bought this or that, and you bought a damn wagon! I'd and say yup just to piss you off.

The most disappointing thing about the 2022 WRX isn't all the plastic. it isn't the lame ass overhangs front and rear. It ain't the fact that it will be longer, wider, and heavier. It's that pathetic redline. These clowns can't do anything without exact competition in this space. They are making money, no doubt, and they have the resources to put something into the WRX. Instead they are just throwing the 2.4L in it that the other models have, and making a larger Impreza based car. Oh the imagination.

At this point we can only hope the STi won't be the same damn thing with an ironing board on the back. And hope is all you got with Booby, as they just keep falling out of the ugly tree and hitting every single branch on the way down.

Give us the Levorg.
Give us a hatch WRX
Give us a hatch STi.
Give us got damn something. February will be 10 years since I owned my GR and a Subaru. 10 damn years, and jack bone S. If they would just bring back the hatch STI they'd have my money and loyalty. Only as loyal as you are to me you clowns. I can only look to a GR Corolla now, or a MMC Mk8 Golf R where they add back some physical controls for climate, etc. I may have to just run bare ass,, backwards, through a corn field, and buy a RWD performance car.

Will one of you manus please bring a somewhat affordable AWD Turbo 6MT coupe or hatchback please? I've got my money just sitting here!

I would take a Crosstrek WRX but this, I don't know. I almost feel like I would have to lift this WRX to match the cladded fender look but then be reminded that it's still a sedan. I would maybe give it a pass if it were a liftback hatch or something.

I was thinking the same earlier, maybe the cladding is optional? Like mentioned above. A specific model for this.
Id be ok with it being for a separate model.

<-- interested in whats coming for the 2.4 engine. Else trade it for a Supra. Would have already except that no manual.

Now, Subaru can certainly screw up with the new one and I have my fingers crossed that they don't; but, the STI will truly be an ALL new vehicle with SGP and the rumored 2.4. I do think people have the wrong expectations based on info from sources we know are highly unreliable(but sometimes accurate). It is going to be a better car. I have zero doubt about that. Just how much better is my question.

edit: My 2004 STi didn't have any more fender than a standard Impreza. Nor did my 2009 WRX. So, what's this 30 years bit?

edit #2: I wish I would be able to remember this post a few years from now; cause, I can see you using bad sales numbers that are actually because of the semi conductor issue and not demand to say "See, this one didn't sell as well.".

Key word. Inspired. My friends that rode in my '04 IMMEDIATELY commented on the extra space in the back when I got my '08. Now, I don't have car loads of people like in the past nor use the car to a level that the size would matter soo much; so, I'm in the camp of having a fun car AND comfortable ride. And remember that both my current DDs are from the "small" Subaru era.

Already has Incline Start Assist.

Would be interesting to see if they would implement hill decent on non-X-Mode cars.
A base Impreza body isn’t the same as a sti. The sti is wider
2004 sti width: 68.5
2004 Impreza: 66.4
The Impreza RS is the same because it is a Wrx/sti fender kit on a regular Impreza. Won’t bother replying to anything else you say because your full of it.

Also, your going to spew out who sold more, and who makes a better car? The golf R is very limited production as always. The CTR and focus RS is made in smaller numbers as well. Dealers gave away stis at under invoice before the Covid shortage because they weren’t the #1 choice to the performance buyer anymore. Your argument is like saying the Camry is a better car for the enthusiast because it sells more than the Supra
