so, what do you think about the options/price?

Looks great to me! Nice processor, good memory and video card.

If you've got a little more cash, bump the processor up, but you really don't have to.

working in IT, i happen to know a thing or two about who makes good equipment. i see who's putting out crap systems everyday in my job. and i could definately tell you which brands are more reliable than others. thanks for your concern, though.

oh, and all manufacturers' pc's are "the automatics of the computer world". i would never buy one in a million years... i build my own. laptops are another story altogether.

if there was an option for "no operating system" i would have chosen it. i wasn't going to pay extra money for xp pro from dell.

Dell laptops are crap. It's great you have it expierence in IT, then I would assume you would know how awful they are. They are crap. They don't hold up to use / abuse. They are cheaper than ibm's, but they aren't nearly as nice. Did I mention they are crap? I've had 5 laptops over the course of 7 years. Of the laptops I've had the latest Inspiron was the worst. It died w/ in 2 weeks of use. I didn't even move it out of my house, and it died. It also had wierd hardware conflicts, ie it couldn't boot w/ a thumb drive attached. Just plain shoddy crap. It's your money, get what you want, but let me know how it's working out for you in 2 years.
AO

This is where the stupid analogy came from:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=734626

Basically dell = crap.

sure thing.

side note: one thing i'm sure to miss out on is apple's fit and finish. why, apple? why do you have to charge so much for your products? (and the answer is probably "because they can")

side note: got a pb15 in november. I've been very happy with it, besides the price. 8) For what I use it for, web surfing, music, dvd's, etc, it's been steller.

We send back the 8600, and got a t41. No problems yet, but, yes it was 3-500 more.

To a certain extent I agree with m750 about the IBM being a more rugged laptop. This was truer with the older T41 vs. the T42 (current model). We are seeing more problems with the T42. Our sales group uses them and there are very few problems with them. The IT guy claims that they’re worth the extra dough. He’s had bad luck with Dell in the past (years ago). With Dell’s current offerings I’m not so sure it’s worth the extra cash.

As for the Dell being crap. Some of that might be true. I had an older dell (600 MHz) and the MB was notorious for loosing one of the DIMM socket. That eventually happened to mine. But that was after four years of light in-home use (basically desk-top). It also started life as a mobile unit for a sales person before I bought it used.

The current Dell offerings are much better. I have a 600M (1.4 GHz) that I use for everything. It gets to ride in my STi (pink springs, links, arms, ball join camber plates) everyday over some pretty nasty back roads. I don’t travel with a case. It just sits on the seat or on the floorboard. It has also seen a ton of air miles in a backpack. I have almost couple of years on it now and it rock solid. The only problem I have with it is that it does no wake properly from hibernation. It is because I have a crappy driver from “Gold X” (USB to serial cable). If I uninstall the driver the problem goes away. I have to live with it because I’m too much of a cheapskate to buy another cable.

If you plan on traveling much you might want to consider the 700m. I wish I would have bought the 300m (their 12.1 at the time). The wife has a 12.1 G4 power-book and when we’re sitting in coach I’m cramped with my 600M and she’s sitting there with her power-book with room to spare, I wish I would have gone with the smaller screen.

Agreed on going small. I've had a 15" laptop and the 14" I'm posting on now, and for as much as they're both great, in retrospect I should have gone smaller. If I needed a desktop replacement, I should have just bought a desktop.
