Default 2002 WRX: Wagon to Sedan fender conversion Q's

So, I know a local guy who buys wrecked WRX, STi, and occasionally other Subaru models, parts them, and sells the parts. I can get just about anything from him for a 2005 and older STi, 2005 and older WRX, and maybe some Outback Sport bits.

One thing I've been wanting to do is buy some 2002-2006 WRX or 2005-2006 STi rear fenders (cut up at the top of the C pillar), and have them put on my car. I have seen this done before here on these forums. I'd also put sedan rear doors, sedan front fenders, sedan front bumper, and a CF hood (mine is beat to hell due to a god damn Oak tree and a rain storm), and have the car professionally repainted. I'd also swap suspensions for the Sedan, including the wider front and rear tracks, and put some 235 or 245 width tires on (sorry, 195 or 185 width tires will still be the word for winter tires).

So, I was standing with the guy who does the partout business a few weekends ago, and we were looking at my Wagon, and another guy's 2002 WRX Sedan, which were parked next to eachother, and we started looking back and forth between the rear lights. WOW, they are different. If I were to do this conversion, I would have to keep my stock tail lights and modify the fenders to fit, or swap to sedan tail lights, and modify my rear hatch to fit the tails.

Here's the big question: When doing a rear fender conversion on a 2002 WRX Wagon to use Sedan fenders, do you use Sedan taillights and modify the hatch, or do you use Wagon taillights and modify the fenders?

And the second question is, will I have to switch over to a sedan rear bumper as well? I do know I will need Sedan fender liners (I drove a car with NO fender liners for a long time, and wow, that was so annoying, I will never do that again), as well as other little things that don't need to be listed here. Just interested in the rear end mostly for now.

As far as I know, with the wagon your best bet will be to use the wagon taillights and mold in the sedan rear flares to the wagon body. Simply because molding the sedan taillights to match up to the rear hatch of the wagon would take a bit more effort.

You could mod the hatch to fit them but you have to remember you also need to modify the rear inner structure where the taillights mount and make sure they will seal against the weather. The easiest way to do to that is if you has a Sedan shell you could cut and fit and entire taillights assy too and then use the contour of the trunk and cut it off and then weld it to the hatch. A lot of work IMO.

The Sedan Flare actually fits up to the Wagon very well all you really need to do is taper it down and cut it a little short to fit up to the wagons taillights. That was the easiest part really. The Hardest part your going to have to deal with is the rear bumper. The stock rear bumper of the wagon is fitted to match the contour of the little bubble style flare the wagon has. You can do this 1 of 2 ways. Stretch the bumper to the edge of the flare by the wheel and then taper the bottom of the flare to match the bumper, or take the side pieces of a sedan bumper and fuse them to your wagon bumper so match the contour. I have done it both ways and I think the 1st is easy but if your going to be putting a body kit on your car then the 2nd way is night because you can trim the fiberglass bumper to fit your OE wagon bumper. It gets the sides to match up, puts the body kit on the car for a better look and you still have OE fitment under your tails and hatch.

PM me if you have anymore questions this is not my first time around the flared wagon department.

Ah, so I talked to my body shop (I have no skills with metalwork at all) and they said they could do this rather easily.

So, going to put sedan rear fenders on, and retain the stock rear taillights. Only thing is, going to replace the passenger side tail light because it has a tiny crack in it that drives me crazy.

Also going to do the front conversion at the same time, and get the entire car repainted (sans hood, which will be a CF hood hopefully... More on that later.

And yes, widebody wagons are the sex. I'm hoping to go for the murdered out look, either UK 17's, or USDM 04 STi wheels gloss black, lightly smoked taillights (whatever I can do without getting in trouble with the fuzz), and a very light tint on the rear windows, and even lighter tint on the front windows, no tint on the windshield).

Wider track. Front and rear Sedan suspension.

If I go with aftermarket wheels, they will probably be custom made 17X10 wheels with proper offset for scrub radius in the front. Another reason I want the wider track is so I can keep running narrow tires in the winter (currently 195 65R15's, looking at some 185 65R15 XL) so I can keep going up to the top of Crater Lake, even when they don't plow it.

When I upgrade the suspension for the wider track, the springs and shocks will get swapped out as well as the front tophats; I will be running DSpecs and an as of yet undetermined spring (thinking STi pinks), and camber plates in the front. Camber bolts in the rear. Going to do the recommended mods to get any additional positive camber in the front that is possible.

ah, interesting

I've looked into going that route before, and it seemed prohibitively expensive for what you get, especially if you go with STi aluminum control arms for more caster.

I know a guy local who parts out and sells wrecked WRX and STi's, so finding inexpensive parts is actually pretty easy and cost not too bad.

It's getting the body work done that's going to kill me. I have to graduate and get a job first, and then I can get a discount on the work. ;D

Search for the IAG performance Project Wide 5. I don't have the link on this computer. It will give you a step by step on how to achieve sedan fender flares on a wagon. The process is quite extensive. Get sedan rear doors and fit them with wagon glass and then you have to combine sedan rear quarter panel with the wagon ones. Keep the wagon tails too. Find the thread I mentioned earlier for a more detailed description. Hope that helps.

Cheers!

Front bumper, fenders, fender liners swap as a bolt on super easy.

Why would you do a narrow body conversion? I guess the two of you could trade..
