Yeah...I tried the PB Blaster for a week solid..not a darn thing...looks like I'm bringing heat into the equation. I really want to get that fluid changed; it's the only lubricant that hasn't been changed since I've owned the car.

02SportWagon.. I had same issue as well.. Use a some heat around the cover, and let it sit for a few and then repeat.. I also found using the emergency jack with a breaker bar was better then a hydraulic jack. Applied pressure nice and slowly until the bolt slowly broke loose

On the cover, around the bolt** my bad

Also you don't need a butane torch. I bought a cheap electric heat gun with 2 settings low and high. High setting worked fine. And yeah +1 for PB

Nice write up. However, not sure if it has been covered in here or not, but I found that to get the maximum amount of old fluid to drain out of the trans, the car has to be level. My car is lowered, so I drove the front wheels onto rhino ramps to get under the car. After draining the trans oil dry on the ramps I noticed that since the trans drain plug is on the bottom of the trans, some old fluid might still be trapped in the back of the trans, due to the front being up in the air. So I put a floor jack under the front of the car, jacked it up, pulled the ramps out, and let the car down. More oil came out, although it was probably only a cup or so worth. Anyway...........something to think about if you want to drain the trans to the max.

Great thread!

I am planning to do this in a week or so (2011 WRX though). How important is it to use the sealant on the threads? I saw a video on youtube showing how to change differential fluid, but I didn't see any sealant applied to the threads. I don't think I have any leaks from the transmission or the diff.

What sealant can be used? Teflon tape?
