Default Idiot tries arc welding with an 04 wrx alternator

I was putting an oil pressure sensor under the alternator of my sons 04 Wrx it's a mt car. Going good right up until the time I brush the red rubber on top of the alternator up against the intake and tried my best arc welder impersonation. Don't try it take it from me nothing good can come from it.Now no interior lights no crank no gauges no starter I do however have the chime for key in the ignition with the door open.I have checked the 80 amp fuse in engine bay and it is getting 12.8 volts across it any help is much appreciated. Electrical is NOT my thing but I do have DMM so can ya help a brother out?

Are you getting voltage measured across the main fuse or measured at both fuse terminals to ground? If it's across the fuse (+ terminal of voltmeter on one side of the fuse and - terminal on the other) the fuse is blown. If it's on both sides of the fuse to ground the fuse is good.
A blown main fuse is the usual result of doing something like this.

Thanks I used both sides but in my panicked state I did exactly that.

That also explains why I got a -12.8 volts last night.

Mulder is correct, if you put each meter probe on each side of a fuse and get a reading, the fuse is blown and the meter is making the circuit.
I clip one lead to a good ground or battery negative, then measure volts on each side of every fuse.
Volts on both sides, fuse OK
Volts on one side, fuse bad
Volts on neither side, maybe another fuse bad, or need the circuit on/key on.

This is why every set of instruction ever made for working on cars starts with "Disconnect negative battery terminal"

Which is what I assumed he'd done and thus why I was confused about the arc welding comment "that couldn't happen unless he hadn't disconnected the negative battery terminal."

He was and is correct and I should have disconnected the battery yada yada yada but Turpid Porpoise your reply is superfluous and unnecessary. I’m sure you have NEVER skated on anything and all you do is roses and light but it’s fixed so yippee for me. Thanks to Mulder for not blowin me up unlike others. Thanks again Mulder.

Soft skin? I didn't lay into you, I didn't even reply directly to you. I posted relevant information that could save someone who reads your thread some costly hospital/repair bills in the future.

Never said I was perfect, just stating a fact. You don't want people to chime in with "superfluous and unnecessary" comments, don't post your screw ups on an open forum...
