Default Depo bugeye jdm replicas

So, I saw these on eBay and after not being able to find any reviews or anything on them, I just said screw it and bought them. I got them in the mail today and installed. They look great and fit perfect! The only problem I've had so far is that the low beams and high beams wiring seems to have been reversed? When I turn on my lights normally, the top section with the reflectors comes on, rather than the projectors. When I turn on my high beams, the projectors come on ad the top part goes off. Granted, the lights came with no actual light bulbs and I currently only have the high and low beams in and no turn signals or running lights, but I don't think that should affect it.

I'm gonna start working on the wiring and will put up some pictures tomorrow! If the wiring just needs to be switched around, then I'd say these are definitely worth the $370.

Quick question:

Are they pointed the right way or intended for RHD vehicles like JDM's??

As far as I can tell, they do have a lhd beam pattern.

Aftermarket bugeye headlights I've tried thus far (excluding these JDM replicas) seem to be wired for 9004 switched positive, not 9007 switched ground.

If you stay with halogen low & high, there should be more than 1 combination out of possible 6 repinning that should work. However, if you go with biXenon, the low beam cares about polarity. There can be more than 1 configurations where the ballast will power the HID bulb, but only 1 where both high (i.e. HID bulb on & solenoid on) and low (i.e. HID bulb on) will work.

Since these headlights are designed for separate high and low beam halogen bulbs, I bet the rewiring is very similar to that of the WRC replica.

The picture below is my scratchpad trying to figure out the proper rewiring of an aftermarket headlight system. The left side is irrelevant; that showed which color combination of the wires allowed both high and low to work properly. I did confirm that there was another layout where the low beam worked, but not the high, and another where the low beam worked only if you switch the oem light stalk to high or flash-to-pass; definitely not the correct setup. What I want to point out is the right side, showing the OEM headlight connector that would've normally fed either driver or passenger side bugeye 9007 low/high beam bulb. The chart below it shows which pins get battery positive and which pin completes the ground in the proper direction.

Again, for halogen bulbs, all that matters is you re pin the input to the JDM low/high bulb replicas to get a pair of active positive and ground, without regard to which one goes where. If you retrofit with a proper projector, the ballast will care. Most solenoids do not care, unless they are the type that stay in one position until a specific PWM like signal tells them to switch to the other position. Afaik, this is rare. (Some Infiniti G37 projectors came set up this way?)

Good luck

I posted this thread in the bugeye thread for him. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=943432

There might be a way to make these work without rewiring everything but I don't know that much about how the lights work.

I've read through that thread and I think I'm just going to have to reverse the wires. We'll see how it goes though

It sounds to me like the Depo lamps are wired for Switched Positive instead of the Switched Negative like our cars run.

Please just document everything you do to get them working so that everyone who wants to get these (myself included) has an easy go of it.

Looking at a Plug'n'Play harness for JDM lamps and the Depo lamps, I found the issue.

The Off the Shelf PnP harnesses for hte JDM Ichicon lamps look like this.

The Depo lamps look like theyre wired like this.

Looking at the back side of the plug, with the flat side of the D point up and the pins pointing away from you, left to right, should be wired like this to work properly:

Left: Low Beam
Middle: Common
Right: High Beam

You can pull the pins out of the connector by pressing down on the tab on the pin with a pick or a small screwdriver.

Definitely a 9004 switched positive:
http://www.hidplanet.com/forums/show...ring-Schematic

Re pinning them like that will work for halogen high and low, but for biXenon, the low beam needs to remain powered when the solenoids are triggered. Even for low beam HID only, I'd rather have the HID bulb powered when the halogen high beams are triggered, or else the HID ballast & bulb will have to momentarily shut off when flash-to-pass is used.

Thanks vision.dynamix! That's what I thought it was, but haven't had the time to get to it today yet. But from what I understand from the info you just posted, and what I have looked up, I just have to switch where the high beam and low beams plug into the stock harness?

I havent made a harness to hold the low beam on in a while. Let me find my diagrams later for how to do that.

The HID version of these lights do not use a bi-xenon set-up. Correct? It looks like it's an HID low beam and a halogen high beam, correct? So no solenoid would be used.

I was referring to the scenario of replacing the low beam projector with a better retrofit. Since most retrofit alternatives are biXenon (save for s2000, LS430, etc.), the issue of solenoid activating while at the same time the HID bulb remaining powered is what I was anticipating with that remark. Sorry if I didn't state that retrofit assumption.

I think red and black need swapped and green stays where it is.
