How-To mod the 2004/2005/2006 fog lights to turn on with 12 volts easily.
How to mod the 2004/2005/2006 fog lights to turn on with 12 volts.
I am not responsible for any damage that can occur with this mod. Also know that it is illegal to drive with only your fog lights on in most states. This mod is very simple to do and can be done to any Impreza that has the factory fog lights installed. Tools needed: - Long 16/18 gauge wire. (To tap into 12 volt turn on source) - Heat Shrink Tubing. (To insulate the relay leg) - Electrical Tape. (To hold everything in place) What needs to be modded: - Just the fog light relay next to the fuse box. How to mod it: - Unscrew the plastic panel under the dashboard. (Remove the plastic screw by the left door jam / dashboard area and unscrew the two screws on the bottom to take that piece off) - Once the panel is removed you will see relays on the right of the fuse box. - The third relay from the bottom is the fog light relay. (This is what you need to unplug and mod) - Using two flathead screwdrivers on each side, unplug the relay. - The Top Right leg of the relay is what senses 12 volts and switches the internal switch inside the relay. - Bend the leg back so it folds over the side of the relay and points towards the opposite direction. - Place some heat shrink tubing over the 16/18 gauge wire, then insert the wire into the hole in the relay leg and insulate it with the heat shrink. - Wrap a little electrical tape around the relay to hold the wire in place and to make sure it doesn't get tugged or pulled off. Make sure you don't tape where the relay has notches to slide back in. - Wire that wire to any 12 volt turn on source and the fogs will go on. I wired it up to the accessory on from the stereo harness. I noted two things after this mod: The switch fog lamp on indicator acts like it did before the mod. (It does not light up unless the headlights are on) The fog lights turn off when the high beams go on. (I think this is to limit the amp draw possibly) I have a picture that I drew on that should help. Have fun with your new modded fog lights.

I emailed you the 1 picture.
Also, I think the other relay leg is just a 12 volt source to power the lights. You can bend or attach a 12 volt constant power run somehow to one of the 12 volt source relay legs and I think that the fogs will stay on with the highbeams. I think that the system cuts power to the relay when you flash the highbeams. I sorta like the fogs going off with highbeams. -( Makes more of a signal type of thingy, you can flash people in front of you and it is way more noticable) I just wasn't ready to do that mod at the time. Maybe later. Also modding the relay is cool cause you can buy another one to revert it back to stock easily. Just be careful, you don't want to fry anything... |

This mod works good on my 04 STi.
I'd like to comment on several things: As for the 12 Volt constant power to the "bent" relay leg, I use the power that will give 12V + only when I turn on the tail light (driving light). I connected that w/ the "purple" power from fog light switch. (try it again w/ Multitester just to double check) As for the "other leg" that was not told to be bent here: That gives negative during low beam but gives positive during high beam. I am not sure if you want to give constant 12 volt into this one. Let's discuss about this mod on how to keep the fog on during both high beam / low beam. |

I'm not sure what you did.
Can you tell me what you connected the top right leg too? I hooked mine up to accesory on on the headunit wiring harness. The Purple line on the switch makes the green light go on? |

If you hook it up w/ the accessory on the HU wiring harness then your fog light can be turned on and off at anytime that you have your key in ACC.
I prefer this better: Instead of that I connected to "purple" wire on the fog light switch itself as that purple wire gives positive current when you turn on the tail light and still positive during low and high beam. And nothing when you switch off the tail light. This is Asian specs car are (not sure about Europe) The fog lights can be turned on after you switched the tail light on (not until you switch on low beam) and will stay on during low and still on during high beam So we got the first mod done good (fog light on after tail light instead of low beam), now it's the optional mod: How to keep fog on w/ tail light, low beam, and high beam Quote:
Sorry if I get you confused.. Good write up from you. |

Thanks.
I understand what you did now. Good option to those who want it to go on with parking lights. I was gonna run a wire from the parking light itself, but didn't want to go through the firewall again. I wanted mine to go on with the key cause they are my daytime running lamps now. Cars can see me clearly and won't pull out in front of me and my other bulbs don't have to be on all the time wearing them out. Also you can do Stealth missions with the setup I have. |

ok so lesliex317537, you can turn on your fog lights when ever you want, no other lights on at all. Correct, I could just attach the wire to the cig. lighter the same way i have my radar detector hooked up. once my key goes to the acc my radar comes on.

There's already a link to a fog light mod thread in the FAQs at the top of this forum. It's an old thread but the info is still valid.

I like not having to cut any wires. Has anyone with an '06 tried this method? Is the the same procedure?

One more question: Are there any issues if I use a piggy-back fuse connector to get 12 volt power like I did for my radar detector? What fuse rating would I need to run the fogs? 10A, 15A, or 20A?

Picard, assuming you are just powering the fog light relay's switching function (not powering the lights themselves), that only draws 100-200mA, so a 1A fuse should be fine.

Success!
It tried this mod out tonight on my 2006 STI with OEM fogs and it worked perfectly. I used another Add-a-Circuit for power and have it connected to the dash illumination fuse for now. They turn on with the parking lights and I'm going to use them as DRLs. It will also be better to use in the really thick fog we get around here every few years. One thing, I tried using part of the heat shrink from a butt connector, but it was too thick. So I just used some black tape to insulate the wire attached to the relay. I only had to use a very short wire since the relay is so close to the fuse box. A BIG thanks goes to LESLIEx317537 for posting this up because I did not have to cut or splice any wires and it was super easy. |

NP, I hope you enjoy your mod as much as I do.
One question with your add a wire fuse thing, I got one also so my fogs and when I get my Defi's they turn on with Ignition on, not Acc on. Does your make your coin holder like not close all the way slightly? Mine is like that, I dono, maybe I'll dremal the back of the coin holder so it doesn't push against the add a wire/fuse... Nice pic BTW. Also I noticed with my setup, if I have all my lights off but the fogs on, and I flash my highbeams, only one highbeam + both HID's go on till I turn on at least the parking lights...then both higbeams go on. Weird... |

If you look at this picture: http://istargazer.ca/sti/fog_mod/sti-fog-mod.jpg you can see that the add-a-circuit is really low profile so it doesn't affect the coin box at all. The one on the right is for the fog lights and the other one is for my V1.
Also, I'm not sure if the wiring has changed on the 2006, but the fog lights will stay on with the high beams. It was probably like that stock, but I never paid attention before. |

Cool.
I just helped my friend tap his Defi turn on lead to the fusebox and tapped it into the bottom left fuse. Both him and I have a slight glove box fitment issue with the add a fuse. Pops out like 2mm more than stock. Not visibly noticable, but you can feel it. |

Work in 2003 model too.
Big thank you to LESLIEx317537 for helping me out. This mod does in fact work on a 2003 model too. Same relay and all.
I did find that bending the relay leg was a bit difficult to do. Mine were thick and the relay felt like it was going to break in my hand. Or the leg would break off. So I hate to say it, but I chickened out on the bending of the relay. Instead I spliced into the red and green wire. I know I know, but I was affraid I was going to bust the relay. However, I did use the fuse tap method which made one less wire to tap into. At any rate, thank you very much LESLIEx317537 for the awesome mod! OHH! I almost forgot! My fog lights dont cut out when I hit highbeams on, or when I flash them!!! When the fog lights are on, there on and I can do running lights, low beams, high beams, or flash and they dont turn off. BUT BUT!!! Say I have them on and the low beams too. The fog light swich light will be on. But the second I put them into highbeams the fog lights still work, BUT the fog light switch light DIMMS. It doesnt go out! It DIMMS. Im not sure if thats a problem or not. But I only cut the red/green wire and pluged the relay side into a 12V on ACC. Thanks, DJ Thanks, DJ Last edited by ILSMKU2; 03-20-2006 at 11:53 PM. |
