Not sure what everyone was expecting from a German, volume sedan option targeted at the budget-frendly market? This is typical conservative, understated VW styling. This is also not a picture of any of the sport, GLI, or performance models. The front is super round/soft and boring, but the sides and rear are very German/Audi. A base or comfort trim Jetta was never intended to be an exciting or extrovert kind of vehicle. I'm sure the car will look better in person, but we will have to see once they hit the lots.

The Jetta was once the epitome of a stylish compact sedan...inside and out. It was unreliable, but it wasn't boring or ugly. The 5th generation adopted a mainstream, corolla-esque exterior, but the interior remained a quality cabin. This generation that is currently on sale is both bland on the outside and cheap on the inside. This coming generation is bland and dare I say a little ugly as well.

VW as a whole used to have a fleet of stylish, well appointed, cantankerous cars. Now it seems like they focus on cost-cut, big, bland, but more reliable transportation.

This times 10. The regular Jetta was never anything to write home about, but the GLI has always turned my eye. I think this will take the GLI treatment well.

Exploring the Design of the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta
VW's head of design gives us a closer look at the metal of the sleek, seventh-generation sedan

By: Ed Tahaney February 16, 2018
CHICAGO, Illinois — Despite an impending snowstorm and freezing temperatures, we were able to make our appointment with Klaus Bischoff, Volkswagen design head, at the 2018 Chicago Auto Show.

Bischoff had a busy morning promoting the all-new 2019 Arteon sedan and we caught up with him later in the day at the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta Design Workshop at a nearby event space in Chicago’s South Loop neighborhood.

The all-new Jetta made its debut less than a month earlier at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show and Bischoff discussed the new model at a workshop during a fascinating presentation over drinks and tasty hors d’oeuvres.

Also in attendance was a classic 1982 Volkswagen Jetta that greeted us at the space’s entrance. Seeing the first generation model up close made it easy to see how far VW’s best-selling model has evolved.

The seventh-generation Jetta joins the Golf and Passat and now rolls on the MQB platform, which gives the sedan a 1.3 inches longer wheelbase over the last version—now at 105.7 inches. It also sports a wider track and more interior space than the previous generation.

“The Jetta is such an iconic product. We wanted to come up with something totally new. It was essential to give this product more prestige, more sportiness, a totally new proportion,” said Bischoff.

Starting up front, the horizontal lines of the grille and round, centered badge make it easy to identify it as a VW. You can see the family resemblance back to the original 1979 model.

“It was essential to give Jetta a strong face,” said Bischoff. “The combination of headlight and grille into one shape gives the front a very wide look, but the grille is also very high and deeply carved—it stands proud. It’s totally new for Jetta to have such a powerful expression.”

Compared to the boxy first-gen Jettas, the 2019 version is smoother, more sophisticated, and well rounded modern vehicle. But the more time you spend studying it; more character lines, wheel arches, and details that extend from the door to the taillight begin to emerge.

Around back, there’s a subtle spoiler that’s intergraded with the trunk—and the space found inside it has increased substantially as well. The interior receives a modest upgrade too with all its gauges and infotainment controls geared towards the driver. There are even a couple of knobs for the stereo—which is always greatly appreciated. Human-machine interface (HMI) is very much alive in the latest reincarnation of the Jetta.

“HMI design is about simplicity—you should understand everything from the first gaze,” said Bischoff. “A cockpit layout needs to be perfect in ergonomics, everything in one line, everything self-explanatory.”

Our favorite upgrade on the all-new Jetta is the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit, which looks nearly as good as the ones found in higher end Audis.

Check out our video of Bischoff presenting a more detailed explanation of the Jetta’s new design language from the workshop here. The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta is expected to arrive at dealerships in the spring

Default VW Teases Sleek New Jetta Ahead Of Detroit Auto Show Debut

It’s not hideous from this angle. Looks like the CC.
But I don’t understand the lifted rear design that’s more pronounced in other photos.

That LCD driven console cluster makes me sad
Too bad OLED cant be used due to burn in issues.
Also, if you are going with the LCD route, at least put in some fancy looking gauges in there. Provide some depth, make them look real.

I drove a Jeep the other week and it had half and half. Whoever developed the LCD half didn't even bother to match the physical gauge half.
I drove in a new Infinity also. I remember when Infinity had that analog clock right in the center console, sign of luxury and finesse I guess. That got replaced by a huge tablet with a crappy looking screen and analog clock. Not to mention how uncomfortable the seats and bumpy the ride was.

Default 2019 VW Jetta Scores Big Boost in Mileage Ratings

Quote:
Quote:
The redesigned 2019 Volkswagen Jetta has gotten its official gas mileage report card from the EPA, and it has pulled up its combined score to 34 mpg. That's up 2 mpg from the previous model and is more directly competitive with efficiency rivals among non-hybrid compact cars with gasoline engines.

The official EPA tally is 30/40/34 mpg city/highway/combined for the 2019 Jetta with its standard powertrains, 2 mpg better across the board from the 28/38/32 mpg ratings for the best-mileage version of the 2018 Jetta (you can compare the new Jetta with all the 2018s here).

The rating also brings the Jetta more in line with mileage leaders among mainstream compact sedans with conventional gasoline engines and automatic transmissions. That includes such competitors as the 2018 Honda Civic at 32/42/36 mpg (with the available turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder and continuously variable automatic transmission), the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze (29/40/33 mpg), the 2018 Toyota Corolla (28/36/32 mpg) and the special, higher-mileage Eco model of the 2018 Hyundai Elantra (32/40/35 mpg). You can compare their ratings here.

All 2019 Jetta models at launch this spring will use a standard 147-horsepower, turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder mated to a new eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual. Unlike for many vehicles, the EPA lists the ratings as the same for the manual as the automatic. In addition to the new automatic, powertrain tweaks include a clutch-driven air conditioner, a more efficient generator and a standard stop-start system.

Among measures VW used to lower air drag and boost the seventh-generation Jetta's mpg ratings are active grille shutters, "air curtains" in the front bumper to reduce turbulence around the front wheels, underbody coverings and aerodynamic rear styling. The Jetta models also have new low rolling-resistance tires.
From Autoblog

VW Jetta fuel economy improves for 2019, same with manual or automatic
The automatic had the biggest gain

Joel Stocksdale
Final details on the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta continue to trickle out, the latest of which concerns the car's fuel economy. EPA numbers have finally been released, and the new Jetta is certainly more efficient than the last one. Interestingly, it also no longer matters what transmission you get, because they all get the same numbers of 30 mpg in the city, 40 on the highway, and 34 in combined driving.

The automatic Jetta sees the biggest gains, since the previous model with the 1.4-liter turbo four-cylinder achieved 28 mpg in the city, 38 on the highway, and 32 combined. The manual only improves on city and combined fuel economy, which was 28 and 33 mpg respectively. Both of these models are more efficient than the old 1.8-liter and 2.0-liter models, but last year's 1.4-liter cars were, too, and the larger-displacement models are no longer offered. Volkswagen credits a number of changes to these gains including the new eight-speed automatic that replaces the six-speed. And, while not mentioned, the manual model probably saw improvements from the six-speed that replaced the five-speed. VW also cites tires with lower rolling resistance and a body with less drag.

The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta goes on sale this summer. It starts at $18,545, which is actually slightly cheaper than the old one. Considering the lower price, better fuel economy and larger feature set, the Jetta looks good on paper, though our experience so far indicates it's not as great a drive as it once was.

wow...smaller engine, better MPG's and not as fun to drive.

Well...IMO, the Jetta has always been the toaster of VW's bread and butter money maker.
Goes from Point A to Point B...and probably driven by college kids and people who don't know where the oil dipstick is.

They'll sell a ton of them.

I mean.. it's a Golf sedan. I don't understand how VW could screw this up so badly. I really hope this isn't an indicator of what's to come for the next Golf.

Oh, and this:
Just for clarification, the 1.4t was the base engine for a few years now, so they have not downgraded the engine. The 1.4t is a very good all-around engine for a commuter car and still feels "punchy" in traffic.

What has happened at this time is VW has dropped the other engine choices for the first year of the new model/redesign. The 2.0t will come with the GLI when it is released. Who knows if the 1.8t will make a return again in a Sport model, as it did with the current generation.

Again, the car has not even been released, or driven by anyone here, and is being written off as a step in the wrong direction. Why not actually wait and see what the car is really like before passing judgment?

Very good point.

I like the MPG’s.

No one like the last gen Jetta when it debuted, either.
As goes with pretty much any automobile redesign.

Is the Jetta still the Mexican-built cost-reduced version of the Golf? I seem to remember quality went out the window a few years ago in a cost-cutting effort.

This thing is in the latest golf R too, and as someone who has an order in at 3 dealers to see which one can get me my color/trans combo faster, I'm disappointed as well. It's the one feature about the car I wish I could change. It has some cool features, like being able to pull the navigation up into the cluster, but the gauges look cheap and clunky. The Audi clusters look so much nicer in comparison.
