Default White is good. Blue is bad. This damage frightens me...what exactly is broken?

OK, since there isn't a "steering rack" forum, I'm posting here...

I totalled my car on Monday and am waiting to hear back from the insurance company on the exact damage number and how much they're going to give me for the car. I'm contemplating buying it back to turn into a PGT rally car or parting it out to existing rally teams. But I noticed something in the pic the other night that doesn't give me warm fuzzies.

Look at the wheels. They're straight. Look at my steering wheel. Yes, white is up and blue is down. It appears that the steering rack has been completely thrashed because the steering wheel is upside down with the wheels pointing straight. I was at full lock left on impact and now the wheels are straight.

With just the image to go by in the following post, is it possible to give me a guess as to what internals got destroyed? The rods are still connected so the knuckles didn't just bust off the arms...how much are we talking about here for a new rack?

Ouch, that's rough. It's hard to say what's been bashed up just from the picture. It's entirely possible that you trashed the steering rack if everything is reasonably straight. I'm not sure about a new one, but at one time when I was contemplating trying to get a local place fab a quick steering rack a junkyard rack was about $150.

Did you hit a guardrail? Was there a curb before the guardrail? It looks like you could broken the linkage from the steering wheel or damaged the internals to the rack.

without seeing the underside of the car its hard to tell.

From experience...

you can start with.

strut, spring, top mounts etc..

steering knuckle (hub, bearing etc).

Lower control arm.

Steering Rack.

Possible damaged subframe.

I doesnt look totaled.
