Preparing to "fix" rust on emergency brake drums
I bought some aerosol rust converter and some high temp (1000 degree) metallic aluminum spray paint. I'm planning to remove the rear wheels, unbolt the calipers, sand the drums with several grits, tape off the contact surfaces, prep with alcohol, spray several quick consecutive light coats of converter, wait overnight, spray the calipers and drums a couple times with the high temp paint, wait 4 hours and reassemble.
I've worked on lots of disk and drums brakes before; anything unusual about the Baja? I'm thinking of putting converter on the edges of the rotors where most show rust. Pros or cons? Thoughts and ideas welcome. John

I do pretty much the same thing. I spray the inner hub/hat area, and also the outside edge.

take your calipers off the bracket, pull your pads off, pull the rotor off, then paint. Use a bunji cord to hang your caliper so it doesn't hang on its own rubber hose.
Be sure your rotors are clean when you're done. Use brake clean to remove your finger prints and whatever else you slobber on them. I like glossy black calipers but my Jetta came with red calipers, its ok. Usually they're noticably dirty. gitRdun! |
