Default Is the FXT sub powered from the deck?

I have an 04 Forester XT with the 6 disc indash changer. Im wondering if the woofer (+) and (-) pins on the 8 pin connector are at line level, or speaker level. I can't imagine they are powering the sub with just the deck, but then again I can't find an amp for the sub anywhere either. Someone had posted an email from SOA stating "The pin adapter that you are referring to is for the Subaru sub-woofer/amplifier."

thanks
e!

P.s. does anyone have the rest of the above drawing, the pinout for the main connector is cut off.

The sub-woofer has its own self contained amplifier. However, the power to feed the sub's amplifier flows from the head unit. There is no direct connection to the battery or any power source other than the head unit.

so do you think the woofer (+) and (-) pins are line level or speaker level?

According to the Electronic Service Manual, it looks like the stock Forester XT subwoofer is powered by the head unit only. No seperate amplifier is listed. The wires coming from the head unit to the 6x9 sub appear to be speaker-level. Those two wires run consistently through three harnesses: White w/Blue stripe and Black w/Yellow stripe straight back to the sub.

Good Luck!

Just to clarify...the WRX sub is way different from the Forester sub.

The WRX is a self-contained model mounted under the passenger seat and includes it's own amplifier. The Forester XT sub is mounted in the rear on the driver's side and is not powered by a seperate amp.

The Forester wires are speaker-level.

I've replaced the sub in my XT with a better 6X9 speaker. It's just a speaker w/ speaker level inputs. The F-XT and Outback VDC (with the McIntosh system) are the only Subaru's that have the sub in the rear cargo area where a cubbie was. The Forester XT's is on the left side and the VDC's is on the right. The others have a self powered unit under one of the seats. It use to be they put them under the drivers seat but now I think they put it under the other one.

Hmmmmm....

I purchased a WRX head unit for the purpose of being able to use the tape deck as an AUX input for an XM radio kit. I'm guessing that the sub for the XT will not be driven properly with the WRX head unit. Crap. I know the other stuff is fine but again, crap. Anybody have any input on this???

The 8-pin subwoofer plugs should be the same.

I'm curious...what else are you planning to do besides adding the WRX head unit to the FXT?

The powered subwoofer that's under the seat has a harness that goes in line to the large one that goes in the back of the head unit like this:

http://www.subaru-parts.com/_instruc...bwooferIxI.pdf

It plugs into the 14P connector you see here:

It's not like the 8P connector you see above for the sub in the XT.

Not mine anyway. There's just a bass control that adjusts all the speakers, not just the sub alone.

I could be wrong but I thought Peaty posted once that there is a gain and xover setting on the sub you can change. Is that right Peaty?

Right (although my name's not Peaty ). For the older style subs, anyway.

Yes I posted this pic on our site back in 99:

That's what the adjusters look like but you have to remove the sub to get at them easly. Or at least you did when they mounted it under the drivers seat. The adjusters are facing the center hump in the car.

Yeah, but don't forget, the adjustment is only for the under-seat sub on the Impreza and old Forester...not the new Forester.
The new FXT's rear sub doesn't have adjustable gain or xover settings.

Would the under the seat sub work with the new Foresters? Since I have the WRX head unit, if I got the sub harness and under the seat sub woul everything work properly. I'm guessing nobody has done this but any conjecture?

Any thoughts on getting the WRX head unit to work with the XT sub?

I'm guessing the under the seat sub would work on the XT but to tell the truth it's not a very good sub at all. Better than nothing I guess but barely. The only way I can think of getting the OEM XT sub to work with the WRX head unit would be to somehow take the speaker level outs and put that into an amp to power the sub. Not sure how well that will work or if it's doable though.

Yeah, I kinda figured that the stock sub wasn't really worth much. At the point I need to take the line level outs from the WRX HU to an external amp, I might as well run a decent sub, but at that point my audio itch just gets worse and the money spent starts growing exponentially with the age old: what if I just....

It is like Subaru makes things kinda interchangable but not quite completely just to torture me

Default New sub

Thanks for all the info, I finally got my audio gear sorted out. The front speaker output from the deck appears to be full range, I was afraid the deck would have had it crossed over. My amp fits like a glove under the passenger seat, Im really happy with it. It was the largest size amp I could find =)

Its 6 channels, so Im running 4 for the speakers, and the last two are bridged for the sub. The amp has a wired remote sub control pot to stick in the ashtray or mount to a blank switch cover.

Im using a JL microsub, its only 8" and the enclosure is the size of a shoe box. It really fills in nicely, its more than enough to balance out the other speakers running off the amp. If anyones looking for a replacement sub, this little 8 will surprise you. Its only about $150, it improves the stock stereo considerably even when running it off deck power. Its really portable, you could probably get a stereo shop to hook it up to the existing sub wiring if you wanted to audition it. Ive been using the 4 ohm micro sub with the stock deck for about 3 months with no issues.

(still have to trim up my cable)

anyhow thought i'd share
