Thinking about buying a WRX NEED help
Hello.
I've been hearing a lot of good things about the new 2002 WRX and I was wondering if you guys could lend me some information about the car. Currently I'm driving a 1994 Eagle Talon ES and I think its time to upgrade. I have 2 cars in mind. The 98 Talon AWD (if I can find one) or the WRX. Since I know nothing about the WRX, what better then to ask you experts. Questions: Are WRX's expensive for repairs and maintence costs? How reliable are they? Can the turbo engine handle a lot of abuse or just little? How is the insurance like if your record is clean? How much is there, in aftermarket upgrades? Has anyone heard about the next years WRX? Or upcoming versions?

I don't think the costs are any higher than other brands. Most new cars don't break down that often anyway. It's certainly not a lemon. Quote:

Thnx for the rply dOOf.
this is very helpful. I hope to get more replies. I say this because, investing in this amount of cash, I would feel a lot more secure in investing in the WRX. |

Hey daxin,
I guess I'd be a good guy to ask since I sold my 1998 talon tsi and bought a WRX... Ok, where to start... I guess I could comment on how hard it is to find a GOOD 98 talon tsi. There were only a handfull shipped to Chrysler Canada that year, I know, I bought the last one available in Eastern Canada... and that was in April 1998... Most DSM drivers (that I know of anyway) drive much harder that your typical Suby driver. Second, the reliability of the talon is somewhat questionnable, the engine is tough (Mitsubishi) but the drivetrain sucks (sounds familiar...), I had to replace the clutch twice in 60000 km and my friend who bought it had to replace it once already. And the clutches were aftermarket! I have to say that all the problem I've had were Chryslerism, Mitsubishi seems to make reliable engines. Mind you, I took extremely good care of it, synthetic oil, scheduled maintenance, etc... This car was pretty fast too and easily modifiable as there are tons of DSM parts and tuners. But the car is heavy and feels wider and longer than the WRX. That gives you a better overall handling but Visibility and cargo space is also sacrificed. The lowdown, good luck finding a good and well maintained talon... Ok now, moving to the WRX. I had been waiting for this car for 2-3 years already... I was not disappointed! It's roomy, it's comfortable, it's powerful and it's tough. You can do this without breaking anything: One more thing that was surprising to me is the difference in power between my slighty modified talon and the stock WRX. On the G-Tech, I recorded a best 0-60 of 6.4 sec on the talon, while doing 5.8 sec with the WRX. Amazing! It also seems to be more petroleum friendly. My talon would average 12-13L/100 km while the REX can manage 10.5L/100 km on the highway. It's also about 200 pounds lighter than the talon and believe me, you can feel it. Handling... one car is about 1 inch lower than the other one... So, again on the G-tech, my best lateral G results with the talon were 0.89 Gs vs 0.87 Gs for the WRX, so advantage talon there. Nothing that can't be fixed with the right suspension tidbits. So there, without rambling on forever, you have my comparison of the two cars. The talon was a great car, good handling, decent power, and good looks. The WRX is a sedan, less sporty (in appearance anyway) and more practical. Street oriented car vs rally-bred car. Your call! I know it's a significant difference in money, but getting a WRX will get you a warranty and the support of one of the best forum I ever been too... You also get one of this year ten best car. Good luck with you choice, send me and email if you want more info! I'm sure you'd be happy either way. It's all come down to how much your willing to pay and how long you plan on keeping the car. pfeww... Matt |
