Default Charity roadrally!

Once a year we do a rally benefiting a local charity. The rally (and the entry fee) are the same as usual, but you have to bring a new children's book in addition. The Network of Community Ministries in Richardson provides food, shelter, clothing, counseling, health care, school supplies, and books to children (and their families) in need. Especially around Christmas, entertaining children’s books are a most popular item….but one that runs out fast, as most donors concentrate on more serious needs of the client families. The book may be intended for any age, be on any subject, by any author, just so long as the book is intended for children.

The rally is much like others we have done this year, except in two respects: first, it is on Sunday! This gives our friends at auto dealerships a chance to come play our game. Second, the course-following is simple, with mileages at every turn, but the scoring from signs along the route is more complex. The navigators will be a little busier than usual, with a bit more of a challenge. The concept is borrowed from the SCCA national championship rally that I ran in Michigan earlier this month. I think you will enjoy it.

The details of the Children's Book Run are on the flier at http://texasscca.org/images/document...NBR12flier.pdf . The pre-registration shortcut is tinyurl.com/NBR12msr .

By the way, two Subarus entered our Great Pumpkin Rally last weekend, one taking third in class.

No, no, no... I was car number one! Rob will have to be car number 2! Our team is holding down the first and second spot. Soon, our trifecta will be complete!

I am #1
...all others are #2 or lesser.

If you disagree we will have to settle it in the time honored fashion.

I was looking into this statement a little bit, and I was wondering, is this a TSD (time, speed, distance) type rally? I've never participated in one like this before, so I was just wondering.
Thanks to you and all of the people involved in the organization of this year's rallies. I have had so much fun, even if my results have been less than spectacular. I look forward to the next rally and many more to come!

No, if we ever do a TSD rally, it will be with lots of fanfare. We will have to have a formal rally school first. And before we do it, we will have to know that there are at least a few people willing to give it a try. TSD rallies are a lot more work to set up than the rallies we have been doing, and require more people to put them on. When the clamor for one gets louder, we will see if we can talk one of the very few TSD experts in the metroplex into doing one.

The Children's Book Run still has you looking for signs, but the rules for finding valid signs are different, and will take a little more organization by the navigator. You really want to preregister, so that you get the rules mailed to you in advance.

Aha, great info, thanks! We're registered already, so we'll be scouring the rules as soon as we get them. See you in December!

Default Rally update

2012 CHILDREN'S BOOK RUN, BENEFITING NETWORK

Eleven cars have entered as of today. I expect 25-30 by rally day. Subaru and Mazda already have enough entries to form a team. We also have MINIs (2), a Ford Galaxy, a Honda Accord, and a Hyundai Santa Fe.

GOOD NEWS: If you can't come to the rally, but you would like to support our charity, you can drop off new children's books at two locations:
MINI of Dallas, 6250 Lemmon Avenue, Dallas. Receptionist desk.
Subaru of Plano, 4480 W Plano Pkwy, Plano. Chris Culbertson's office.

Also if you can't be with us on December 2, we need course checkers, both novice and experienced. On a day of your choosing, we will give you all the paperwork, and you can run the event. Then you report to us your impressions, and any problems you had. This not only gives you a chance at some fun you might otherwise miss, but helps us put on a better event. Just send an email to [email protected] .

The Children's Book Run ends the 2012 Texas Region Championship Rally Series. Class winners will be invited to the SCCA banquet early next year to pick up their trophies.

Have I got a deal for you! A guy from Houston with a 1982 Alfa Romeo GTV6 wants to run, but can't find a navigator. If you are interested in what should be a fun ride, email me at [email protected] . If you have been wanting to try one of our local rallies, here is an easy way to do it.
