Thanks! I noticed this after I had uploaded it. It turns out that the camera crops a little bit off the bottom after processing the HDR. Something for me to keep in mind for future HDR images from the camera. Luckily I have the three RAW images so I can manually create the HDR and make it less crowded at the bottom.

IMO curves are one of the most important editing tools. In the most basic form, curves are used to adjust contrast in certain areas of the histogram (highlights, mid tones, shadows) in the case of the achieving different color tones, it's all variations of the red, green, and blue curve

Highlights/Shadows are set to cooler colors, and as stated by others playing with the curves helps (I generally set the curve to medium contrast, and bring up the highlights a tad, lights are brought up, and the darks are slightly bumped down). Contrast/Clarity was used selectively on the background to make it "pop" even more.

As for the evo, it's my friend Dave's haha, and it was painted matte red, not wrapped.

haha, thats pretty stupid reasoning if you ask me. You want to switch to Canon JUST because you see more people shooting it? I would tell you not to do it. Not because i shoot a D700, because that would be an awful financial decision. Photography equipment. Especially bodies, dont hold their value very well. Although 5d2's are great cameras... its just not worth it. Besides. The D700 still kills 5d2 low light/iso performance. The D700 has 51 focus points and the 5dmk2 has 9...... D700 will focus quicker and more accurate in low light. AAAAAAND you cant get the 14-24 f/2.8 for canon! I prefer nikon glass anyways. It just feels better built. Thats my $.02

With inflation, your $.02 isn't worth very much. Canon all the way!

Seriously though, it really comes down to preference. I always tell people who want to get into any sort of photography and are ready to step up to a DSLR to stick with either Nikon or Canon.

I say go play with the cameras in a store and see which one feels better in your hands. The fact of the matter is that you really go wrong with either brand. Keep in mind, you're not just buying a camera, you're buying into a system. Electronics always get updated (bodies, flashes, etc.) but your real cost is in buying quality glass. Overtime you can easily spend thousands of dollars in lenses and they will carry over to new bodies that come out.

I never said i dont like Canon. Any real photographer knows one isnt better than the other. It's all about the end result. And if you get the same end result with a 5d2 as you do with a d700, i dont see why you would switch. UNLESS it's for video. If not your d700 is more than capable.

5dmk2 focus is iffy at times. I've learned to adapt to it and rarely miss but you have to get used to how it focuses. I really only ever use center spot focus because it works the best myself.

I'll put in some input on my Sony. I've picked up an A77 and it's been an absolute pleasure to shoot with. I like to have one crop and one full frame as it allows for flexibility and even with two different brands I have no issues switching back and forth. If you've never tried a Sony give it a go. The electronic OLED viewfinder is an absolute pleasure and the DRO built into the cam really works wonders. Nevermind 12fps shooting and image stabilization on all lenses as it is built into the camera. It's really amazing!

Depending on how things go I'm probably going to pick up the A99 successor for a full frame Sony next.

Tons of pics from my vacation shot w/ each camera (A77 and 5dmk2) can be found here and below is a sampling. Enjoy! I'll be adding more scenic stuff over the next few days.

458 italia spyder taken w/ 5d2 / 18mm/3.5CZ (this one was chasing the mp4 from earlier). Yes it's bright I wanted that 458 to POP!

Were you using a filter on the shot of the gullwing? How do you get the sun to look all purdy like that? When I take photos with the sun in the background they come out looking like doo doo. I'm probably doing it wrong.

A77 had a UV and circular polarizer on. The Gullwing was my 50L so just a UV filter. You get it by using a hood on your lens + aiming into the sun just enough + a bit of editing witchcraft.

I knew I couldn't be the only one!
I shoot with Sony as well and have negligible complaints - all systems have their pros and cons though. While I wasn't too over the moon about the electronic OLED, it was definitely bright and easy on the eye to use. Granted, that was just a test run on a display model in a camera store and maybe actually owning it would be a different story - I've read that it is something that you can get used to very easily. But, I do enjoy the built-into-the-camera-body IS, the DRO feature, and the FPS rate. I think it is a camera system that you get a lot of value for your money out of. My one gripe is the hot shoe, but just buy a 20$ adaptor and you're good to go. I wish they would release an updated version of an 800 or 900-series with a traditional OVF, but I don't expect they ever will. Kind of a moot point anyway since I don't have the money these days to buy even a used old one, never mind a brand new one.

Thanks! I know it's the "baby" of the zooms but I can't wait to work with it! I couldn't justify the extra $1000 for the 2.8 at this time. I did a ton of research and this will suit my needs better.

I'm a fast lens aficionado, but as you stated previously that you'll be using this mainly at the track, no need for the extra stop of light. It just feels so right in the hand, you'll love it.

I was playing with it around the house (which is extremely dark) just to test out the IS, and I have to say I'm very impressed. I was getting clear pics at 1/30s and some at 1/10s. That's amazing to me for hand held shots!

Thanks! And yeah that will most likely be my next purchase. My buddy has the 50mm 1.4 and I got to borrow it for about a week not too long ago. It was really hard to give it back.
