Grinding noise braking on slippery surface.
Hi guys, starting a new thread since I can't find anyone who has had this problem.
After getting the classic center diff binding I replaced it with a supposedly known good diff from a 13 WRX. First drive out I got on the brakes on snow and while the wheels began to lock up I heard an awful grinding noise which seems to come from the tranny. Wondering if maybe the whole time my problem was in fact the rear diff instead of the center, I went ahead and just replaced it with a newer unit. Now I still have the problem, and I am stumped, it seems like the only assembly that could cause this noise would be the center differential considering I can reproduce the noise while braking in neutral. It also seems worse when I pull the hand brake rather than braking, which would cause the c diff to work the most. Am I missing something? Should I go back to the shop that sold me the used center diff? Thanks!

Are you talking about the noise that the ABS makes when it is trying to stop your wheels from locking up?

So, you have now installed used center and rear diffs? And, you still have the noise. Did the sound get any better with the installation of either diff? I can't think of a good test, just getting more info for the next person...... |

I had a very similar noise in my 02 Impreza. When braking softly at low speeds on wet surfaces I would get a horrible grinding noise from under my car. Sounded like from/center diff. I found out that the previous owner ran snow chains on the rear of the car during the winters and none on the front and toasted the center diff. I replaced the transmission+center diff and the noise and issue went away.
You might have gotten a bad diff. If you have a friend with a shop/lift you can put the car up in the air and let the car roll at low speed then have them lightly pull up the e-brake and see if you can pinpoint where the noise is coming from. |

Good thinking, I have a lift at work and will see if I can pinpoint it with a stethoscope. Seems to me the only possible culprit is the center diff. That's right, I have replaced both diffs with used ones. The center was a 2013 WRX, and the rear from an 05. |
