Alright, I need some help. I cannot figure out WTF is making this goddamn squeaking noise.

In the video I'm sitting on a slight hill facing down, just letting off the brake while in neutral, going down a bit and then hitting the brakes to stop.

I've taken the center console up and held the wires and stuff underneath there, but the noise is still present. I've had a passenger in the front seat and back seat. Held the front seats so it can't move, moved the passenger seat all the way up and back and middle and the seat back the same... noise is still there. I think it's possible that it's coming from underneath the car somewhere near the center tunnel.

I did take the car into the dealer and they said that some passenger seat wiring/plugs were loose and they fixed those. Noise is still present - though that may have fixed some other rattling noises, idk - this is the big problem.

Any ideas?

That sounds crazy annoying. Unless someone else has already experienced this, better get down to the basics. To rule the underside of the car out, have someone do the same thing while you're outside with the car off.

Since it is so easily repeatable it should be easy enough to have a passenger stick their ear around/touch stuff until they find where it is coming from. Where do you think it's coming from?

Open your glove box, make sure it is nothing in there. Does it do it when you go over bumps? When did it start? (i.e. following some other garage visit?)

Anyway just a thought - if you're convinced it's the pax seat, that seat is pretty simple to remove... yank it out for a day. If you still have the noise, you've at least ruled it out, and it gives your passenger in the rear seat a lot more room to move around to find the source.

Anyone have a custom sound system/SUB like me with a 2017+ rear view mirror(with autodimm, compass, homelink) experience rattling? I have a 2016 and my rear view mirror rattles really bad on crappy roads and when I obviously crank up my volume. Seeing if the new mirrors have a slightly different design that doesn't rattle as much. I took my mirror apart and added CLD tiles in it to hopefully add mass to it but seems like the issue is where the lip around the plastic meets the actual mirror that rattles.

This ended up being shifter stabilizer bushing (35036AA010 - CUSHION RUBBER-GEAR SHIFT) that needed to be replaced.

So far I haven't heard the noise again. Hopefully it stays that way.

So I'll just list what I got from various threads.

SOLVED

1. Steering column rattle - This seems like it's the Cruize control button.
Solution - Take stalk apart, remove button, spring and ball, stretch spring. reinsert. no more rattle

2. Rear window rattle - This seems to be the seat bracket
Solution - Take the reat seat back out. The center latch on the seat rattles against the hook bolt. Put some dynamat or some durable thick rubber on top of the bolt head. *note* i put dynamat, it worked for a few months.. but it wore through.. and started ratteling again.. next will be piece of thick leather.

3. passenger Door rattle - this seems to be wiring rattleing against the inner door panel or the cover. Use some sticky foam and wrap wires..

4. wagon spare tire rattle thanks "sjl1614" for solution
solution - Where the spare tire "cover" sits down and rests of the plastic trim, right under there, the trim sits on metal tabs. Which is the souce of the rattle. use some foam tape on the metal tabs and the noise is gone - sjl1614

5. Drivers side door handle thanks "Flat4 STI"
solution - Drivers side door handle, where you pull the door closed would rattle. 3m double sided tape on the bottom of it where the screw pokes through.

6. Steering column top plastic rattle thanks "Flat4 STI"
Solution - 3M double sided tape,Once you take off the top piece of plastic, nearest the steering wheel theres a piece of plastic that sticks up,I used two layers to touch the column plastic pieceAlso about the middle of the steering plastic piece i put another piece of 3M there also.Kinda hard to descibe.

7. Rear deck area rattle where third brake light is "Flat4 STI"
Solution - center seat belt plastic cover in trunk was loose, the piece that covers the retract part,Silicone around top edge to hold it in place.

8. high pitch rattle behind ear thanks "gh32"
Solution - Very faint metal-on-metal high-pitched noise that took me a while to identify. Turns out it was the zipper on the passenger seat on the top of the pass-through (roughly behind where your neck is). Easily fixed with a piece of tape.

9. glove box key hole
Solution - try using some thick silicone grease? if the problem is within the lock, if its outside then, remove the unit and add 3M windows seal

10. glove box rattle thanks "hank3"
Solution - I had the glove box rattle and what I did was wrap some black electrical tape around the U-shaped bracket the door latch attaches to. That fixed the rattle

UNSOLVED

1. Seatbelt top cover rattle - I put this on unsolved because to me removing outright is not a solution.

2. Driver side A Pillar, Vent cover - put puressure on the vent cover piece by the A-Pillar and rattle stops. -
Things I tried
- siliconing the white clips..
- taping the vent cover piece to the bottom piece..
- strips of fuzzy side of velcro (helped a bit but still there)
- removing the entire vent cover

*edit you can emulate this sound by pushing down on the vent piece. repeat until you have the right speed and pressure.. the only way i see to solve this it to jam some thick cloth to maintain the pressure, or take the dash apart... i have not done this yet...

3. Steering column rattle - left wheel goes over bumps - when only the left front wheel goes over the bumps the whole steering column shutters... I dont' think there's going to be a solution to this..

4. Rearview mirror - if you have warrenty left then it's all good but what if you don't? any one have a fix for this?

anyone else like to add?

I've got one not listed... 2014 Crosstrek, there is a rattle (well, in mine at least..) right smack dab in the middle of the dash. I got mad at it once and slapped right under the hazards button and it stopped for about 15 seconds. Now I drown it out with music.

Hi guys.

If anyone here has a creaking coming from the rear seats I found that the culprit was the striker/latch mechanism so I wrapped duct tape (maybe felt tape will also work) a couple times so it makes the seat thight when it locks into place and boom! no more noise.

I had the 2015+ passenger door rattle issue. Opened up the door card and put in a piece of foam adhesive going around the speaker and it solved the issue for a while. Now it's come back. Not sure if its the same place or a new one. I was watching a video on YouTube where someone took out a plastic pad from the door that didn't appear to have a specific purpose. It had some adhesive foam on it as though Subaru knew it was the source of a rattle and put that on it.

So the interesting thing is I wanted to know what this is specifically for. The best I've been able to find is its some kind of water guard. Although in my findings I also found out that there are two different versions of the part depending on whether or not you have the premium audio. I wonder if the root cause of the sound issue is due to this part being mismatched with the type of audio in your car. I'm going to check it out when I get home from work but I wonder. Hopefully the part number is stamped on the part somewhere.

PAD - SUBARU (61208VA010) - Premium Sound
PAD - SUBARU (61208FJ000) - Without Premium Sound

Sorry guys. Been busy. VR headset came in and I was consumed with it. I took apart that passenger door. Testing is positive at this moment. I spent like 20 mins listening to my music. No rattles like before. I removed all of the interior door panel plastic sheets and foam.

I also removed the part I questioned. Guess what? It was the wrong part. I have a Limited with the HK sound system. This part is for the non premium sound system.

Maybe some of you guys with these 2015+ door rattles can check this part too.

Decided to take my 15 wrx on my new commute route. Bumpy roads revealed rattles along the headliner near the visors. I taped up the wires above the map light. Still there. I saw a post about the visor rattles. Any one know of a fix?

So in the interest of following up on the passenger door sounds with the HK premium system on the 2015 STI, I ordered the part that is supposed to correspond to the premium sound.

PAD - SUBARU (61208VA010) - Premium Sound (https://www.subarugenuineparts.com/o...pad-61208va010)
PAD - SUBARU (61208FJ000) - Without Premium Sound

I removed (61208FJ000) which one YouTuber (
) said *should* fix the issue. If anything it made it worse. I will try out the newly ordered part by itself. If that does not fix it I will go completely overboard on padding and isolating things in the door. BTW, I asked SOA about this and they gave me a really **** answer and told me to go to a local dealer. The same local dealer who didn't presumably install the correct parts in the first place.

BTW that part is $17 and change, so whatever. If it works then great. If not oh well, it's not a lot of money.

Edit: Part came in. Not sure how I got it mixed up but its for the left side, not the right, which is what I would have wanted. The part is exactly the same though. Oh well.

Default 2016 STi dashboard creaking noise

Hey guys,

I have a 2016 STi with about 38k miles. Recently, I have been hearing a creaking noise coming from the dashboard on both the passenger and driver side. It sounds like plastic and metal rubbing together and making a popping/creaking noise near the top of the dashboard near the windshield. It actually reminds me of a worn out bushing.

Could it be the windshield or maybe a loose bolt? I can't seem to find the source. It only happens with abrupt bumps.

Any suggestions?

Check the dash speaker grills. That was the cause of my 2017 WRX RATTLE issue. In my Forester XT it was aftermarket pioneer GPS antenna rattling in that same spot.

Interesting... I had one replaced already under warranty because it wouldn't stay seated down all the way, it was sticking up in one corner. Still looks like it's flat now, but I'll check them again and see if reinstalling them fixes that particular noise.

I probably need to take my door cards off and do something there, too. And the rear deck.

I had rattles around there too. For me it was the A-pillar clips, tweeter grills and plastic trim around the gauge cluster.
Basically Subaru clips suck. Tear off every trim panel (door card, pillar etc) remove the plastic clip, put some electrical tape across the hole where the clip is installed, and then jam the clip back in and re-attach the panel. Will stop the rattling.
For the tweeter grills, just put sticky backed felt (available at hobby stores) on the clips, and around the edges. For the gauge cluster trim, hopefully that's not your problem. Mine only made noise when it was cold. Press on it in various spots (top, sides, bottom, etc) to see if that stops the rattle. if it is, you'll have to take it off (easy) and put felt on every single surface until you find out which one was making the squeak. Took me like 5 attempts, but luckily it's easy to remove - just 2 screws IIRC.
Good luck!

Tried the speaker grill fix but it didn't help. The creaking noise sounds like it is where the firewall and dashboard connect. Here is a video of the noise:
