alright guys so i finally got the steering wheel controls installed along with my carbon fiber steering wheel.

the controls work! Now everything is working as it was designed. as you can see the plugs are pretty much the same thing.

for the pic with the pink wire that is the starlink cable. all i did was move the pin to the first top left plug as you see. then i inserted the 8pin plug to the 12 plug behind the radio. (i know its not the same plug but it went in and it did the job of connecting it added some tape behind so it would not fall) I could not find a 12 plug anywhere so i could clip it in correctly but it worked. at
minute 18:16 he shows the plug. the blue wire is star link so that is what i did to match it.

so all is left to do is find a way for the radio to shut off after door is opened/closed. I read that the body integration ecu has to be replaced part# 88281-VA850. it cost about 221 bucks but defeats the purpose of the swap, I paid 250 for radio and 120 for steering wheel switches. If i find a cheap ecu Ill install it and get back to you guys. For now 3 minutes for it to shut off is not a big deal

every plug is plug and play including rear view camera
the pic with headunit from behind with yellow circle is where i plugged in usb cable works. both work. the red circle for plug is the star link plug i was talking about

I just bought one too for my forester, does your car also have the 2 usb ports right next to the aux and if it does did you try the aux yet, it looks good man.

Your old radio does not have the standalone connector for the backup camera so it should not work and that connector would be i146 in the service manual. Your car has the backup camera on the 28pin connector i192 instead so you're right about that car needing a harness..

Just Tried it on a 2018 Forester and from what I see

USB/AUX works
Android Auto/Carplay Works
Dimming works
CD Player works
XM works (complained about antenna but worked anyway)
Bluetooth works
Backup Camera works

Pretty much everything works besides the radio takes about 3 minutes to turn off and does not turn white like snakes but actually stays on which I prefer VS stock out and the steering wheel controls(which I will fix later) I did have the starlink problem like blazing but the same fix works fine.

I'm going to reinstall it and leave it in once I get my arduino to remap the steering wheel controls because the sound quality is better in my car VS stock.(with my kenwood speakers it is) I's really a shame subaru does not offer an option to just get this as an option because if you have a WRX all you need to do is swap the switch and the starlink connector any it will work besides the 3 minute problem which I think most won't care about anyway.(subaru can probably easily fix this)

Is the "body ECU" different from the main ECU? If they are one in the same then the swap may not be simple. My idea was just to try grounding or supplying power to the door wire. Grounding I'd probably use a door jam switch, and if it needed power the dome light. https://www.carid.com/2000-dodge-neo...yABEgJB7_D_BwE

Where is this starlink connector?

Great work by the both of you and much appreciated for documenting!

Yep I thought of grounding it already and tried it and it worked to turn the radio off.

If you look at the diagram below you will see that the door switch is connecting to the connector i272(12pin on back of radio) from the body integrated unit. I tried on a bench to disconnect power from the acc while constant was connected and the radio stayed on and then turned off in 3 minutes. Grounding out the pin on the back of the radio(i272) while its running off constant turns the radio off. I am hoping simply connecting it straight to the switch(the harness for it is under the drivers dash behind the panel) will turn off the radio with the door open bypassing the body integrated unit.(but that will make it only turn off with the drivers door probably) Now if ground is left on that pin for the switch then the radio will turn off when the car turns off but I don't think it was designed for that.

Dome Lights might also work.

Edit:
I'm going to reinstall mine and leave it in, the stock radio is crap and I'm getting in another Arduino today.

Oh the starlink connector. On my car I have an 8pin connector and the 8th pin on it connects to the telematics unit and if it is left unplugged my starlink will throw an error. To fix mine I looked at the service manual and saw that on the 2019 subaru moved that connection to the 28 pin connector(i87) and that is pin 24 on that connector and if you take it off the 8 pin and stick it in there the starlink light will go green like normal.

Another Problem I noticed is that on mine when the car is turned off and turned back on and put into ACC the radio won't start until you start the engine. The only difference I can see in terms of power is that my car does not have the IG ON on it's i87 connector(the 28pin one) where as the 2019 WRX does. Also when using Auto when you turn the ignition off completely it will cut it off and kick you out of android auto even though the radio will still be on.

Thanks for the extra details. This thread is going to be incredibly helpful when I retro-fit my car hopefully sooner than later.

Default 2018 STI HK System to 2019 Apple Car play/HK swap?

So I own a 2018 STI Limited with the HK system, I desperately want the Apple Car play functionality and OEMness of the 2019+ systems which offer this. I've read through this thread a few times and looking for details on has anyone actually been able to do this? Someone made any adapter harnesses or have the part numbers necessary etc. I'm fairly well versed in 12v electronics but hoping someone has done the heavy lifting of figuring this out or if it's possible or not.

^ no one has posted the back of the HK units of the 19+. I’ve been waiting for some info since this thread started too lol. I’ve given up tbh... the cost new is prohibitive here in Canada, and donor wrecker cars/units are much harder to come by than in the US.

Well if you figure out how to get it done let me know and I'll locate a head unit for you and ship it

Well the first step is being able to see if the connectors are anywhere close to the existing setup for pre-19 HK models. But i guess no HK 19+ owners haven't switched their units, or don't care to help us out lol.

And I appreciate the offer, but it's harder for US cars with the starlink connected services which we don't have up here in Canada. I wouldn't know what to do with that. Aside from that, I suspect it should all connect the same and need their steering wheel controls as well since the button resistances are a little different. We may also need the USB module... I'm pretty sure the 19+ has stronger output than our USB, unless the MY18 got upgraded already. We would have the same issue of the unit not shutting off when the car is off since we don't have the open-door-cutoff too.

19 CarPlay has been swapped to 18's successfully. You'll need to source the correct headunit ( think they different for HK vs non-HK), a new USB hub, 86257SJ131, new steering wheel controls, 83154A300. One plug has changed, and is why some folks are experiencing the unit not shutting off after turning the car off. '19 radio has a 12 pin connector input, and the 18's had an 8 pin plug. The 8 pin plug has 1 pink wire. That pink wire has to be moved over to match what would be a blue wire going to the 12 pin plug on the 19 radio. They are Sumitomo NH series connectors, available on Eastern Beaver. It would be an 8 pin male socket to a 12 pin female plug. Only the one wire is needed/present on the factory plugs.

Nice. Did you do this with a HK unit or non-HK?

Default 2019 WRX and STi get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto... BUT

Was that on a HK or non-HK vehicle?

Edit: sorry for the double post, hadn’t refreshed.

Incredibly interested in this and thanks for the consolidated findings.

1) Do you have a link to the other post(s) where people have swapped this, was this done by yourself, or was it just from reading the pages in this post?

2) Are you saying the 18's have a blue wire on the 12-pin harness that can provide what the pink wire on the 8-pin harness needs? I was thinking I'd have to run that to a door switch.

This was on a non-HK unit. HK hasn't changed their amp/speaker setup since the 2016 revision, so I'd imagine you'd just need to source a CarPlay headunit that had HK if you currently have the HK system. A few folks on Facebook figured it out already. Let's see if this works:

Awesome I'll have to follow this page! All the while we were discussing it here someone had already done it haha. Also didn't know you could embed facrbook posts, was that through your phone?

Should have it in my possession next week. Super bummed I didn’t notice it was for the Harmon system when I bought it. It appears to have the factory plastic still on it as well. I’ll know more Tuesday when it shows.

Alright so got this installed tonight. 2017 wrx base w no Starlink. So all I had to do was connect acc to the third pin to the right of the top row of the 12 pin connector when you’re looking at the radio. You can either connect to acc, ground or the door trigger if you want it to stay on until the door opens. Any of the three work for turning off the radio to the pin once acc drops from the radio power harness.
I tried both acc and straight ground for turnoff and they both work the same. Didn’t try the door trigger cause I don’t want it to stay on with the ign off.

Also I previously had converted to the Fujitsuten 7” with a harness from auto harness house so the rest of the wiring for the camera was already done.
Just waiting for the USB port to show up so the CarPlay will work.

First impressions is the sound is better than either of the previous two radios I had base clarion crapper or 7”.

Only negative I’m seeing is this radio takes forever to turn on and boot up. Like 20secs or so which is a little lame.

Thanks for the much needed info. Is there an 8-pin male to 12-pin female adapter on Eastern Beaver or anywhere else? How did you go from 8 pins to 12? I checked their website and I see the 8-pin and 12-pin female/male connectors I but don't see adapters. Thanks again.

EDIT: I think I get it now. I wasn't thinking outside the box haha. You would buy both the 8-pin male and 12-pin female and just wire them together to make a little harness/adapter thing. Am I right? Thanks.

A few folks on Facebook figured it out already. Let's see if this works: https://www.facebook.com/EBuiltgarag...13852829350682 I have some of the sockets and plugs on hand if anybody wants to test it out, I'm more than willing to ship them out for testing, just ask to cover postage! Also, I do some of this Subaru wiring stuff, you can check out my work at https://www.instagram.com/free_refil/

I have a 2017 Limited with HK and just bought a 2019 HK head unit (86431VA620). I’m totally down to guinea pig some PnP harnesses.

Silvapain, I hope that is the correct radio. I hadn't heard which one worked with the HK systems. Waiting anxiously for your success!
