Default What does Jiffy Lube, etc. do when they lube a chassis?

I have a friend that is completely opposed to changing his own oil. He's the only person I know that I give **** to for this. He's a huge cheapass but won't save the $15 to $25 doing it himself. So, one of his questions was this: What does the dealer (or whoever) do when the lube the chassis? He talks about seeing techs performing maintenance under his Xterra. I can't convince him that it's smoke and mirrors, especially on a car with less than 50000 miles. What other ammo can you give me to get under his skin?

Not all cars are supposed to be lubed.

some vehicle have 'zerk' fittings on the tie rod ends, ball joints, pitman arms, idler arms etc..

these types of joints need to have grease injected into them to keep them in working order.

Most new cars have sealed joints, but their are a few that still have greasable joints, and the aftermarket still produces replacement parts with zerk fittings.

if he looks on his reciept there should be an area that says how many 'zerk' fittings he has on his truck...if he has any.

I worked at jiffy lube about 5 years ago while I was in school.

Here's some ammo: $15-$25 will buy the supplies required to grease the car for the rest of it's lifetime... just needs a grease gun, some grease, and a flexible hose for the grease gun (makes it a lot easier).

I would do it myself because often when you get it done at a quicky lube place they just shoot grease into the joint until there's a waterfall of grease spurting out around the boot. This would be okay if they wiped it off . When it doesn't get wiped off, you end up with a bunch of grease saturated dirt stuck to your chassis components.
