EJ20 help!! Bought swapped car, don't know what motor it is!
I hope that I am posting this in the right area.
About 2 months ago I bought a 95 impreza l that someone had swapped to an "STi". A few days ago I became curious to exactly what motor was in my car(I know its some kind of EJ20 since it's stamped on top with it.). I looked up a few threads and I still can not find my VIN number on the motor anywhere. It has coil-on-plugs and the ECU is OBD 1. So i'm assuming the motor would have to be <1998? The whole subaru game is new to me, so excuse me if i'm handing out the wrong information. The only numbers I have found are: EJ20--on block under alternator. 02 AB 11112--on small flat area about an inch away from the EJ20 stamp. BB 02--also on same flat area as above^^. 7345-on top of black about 2-3in left of the EJ20 stamp. 596224595387--on top of block on a tab, in the middle-back of the engine, where it connects to tranny. 199413--about 3-5in to the right on the number above^^. 4 cam 16 valve--on cam covers. I know that's about every damn number on the motor but when I run them I still dont get anything for the motor. Also there was a sticker on the front of the cam cover but it was in chinese writing. Nothing that gives me any vin to the motor. I saw on a few threads that the vin in on the left back side of the motor. But i looked and looked and looked and couldnt find anything. Am I just blind??!!?! Someone please help. I need to order some parts for the motor and I want to make sure that I order the correct things for the correct motor. Also, it'd just be nice to know exactly what motor is under the hood since the previous owner couldnt really help me out in any way. Here's a few pics of the motor if that helps anything out at all. Thank you all very much. Here's the cam cover sticker: Motor:

1992-1996 EJ20G.
Just because it has a red (painted) intake manifold doesn't mean it's an STI. What are the last four digits of the ECU code (after 22611A)? Japanese writing. And that sticker is there to write down at what mileage the cam belt was replaced. |

I never said it was an STi. In my original post I clearly stated that he had converted it to an "STi"<----putting it in quotations to show my doubt of it being an STi. If it were an older STi it'd be a lot easier identifying the motor. EJ20K. I'll check ECU and get back today. Thank you very much. |

And how could I identify that it's an EJ20G? I believe you, i just wanted to know how I could verify that. Thank you. |

What is written on the plate on the turbo? There will be a 10 digit part number as well as either a VF or TD designation on the next line down.

Definitely EJ20g.
Take a look at your turbo to find out if its a TD04 (wrx) or TD05 (sti). Also check your ECU to see if its stamped Z4 (wrx) or SB or SA (sti) |

WRX (wagon) Td04. Wrx/Sti Td05. My apologies. Z4 definitely is WRX stamped though. STi were SB or SA. My previous Version II STi was stamped SB. Every JDM WRX that I have taken an ECU out of is Z4 stamped. |

Definitely ej20g. But I don't see a 5th fuel injector on the intake manifold. Don't all V1&V2 STi's have that?

Only the WRX RA and STi RA have the famous (but useless) 5th injector.

EJ20G. Valve covers also tell you.
Check the turbo and ECU to tell if it's an STi or WRX. These guys are right. |
