Talking Best Clutch + pressure plate setup

I am just curious.

what do you guys think the best setup is for
an clutch an pressure plate..

on a turbo EJ25?

thats the only thing i have not bought yet...
not sure whats best

Dunno...what do you consider "best"? Many people have had success with the ACT street setup. Run higher boost, and you'll need the race setup.

I am running the Clutchmasters Stage III kevlar clutch and absolutely love it. Feels just like stock, cept that it actually holds boost

I really like the ACT setup, that's what I use. It has a heavier pedal than stock, I like it gives more feel.

I heard that iSR came out with a clutch/pressure plate street setup, TMR Impreza (I think) was saying that he has that now and likes it much more than ACT. You might want to find out about that before choosing.

i just don't want anything thats going to buck the transmission every single time i ease into gear.
so everyone says the clutchmaster is pretty nice then huh?

i heard TMR say the ACT setup is a pretty stiff and "*bam*" between gears.. that doesn't sound too nice.

i don't drag race i do allot of autocrossing and road racing(tracks of course) . the car should be...(i hope) around 350-400hp its a fully built motor so you can understand i have concerns for the transmission..

with that much HP (wow, that is a LOT) the consensus is that the stock tranny wont hold , perhaps even an STI tranny wont hold. as for a clutch I really doubt a full disk street clutch is going to hang on.
get ready for some 4 puck bucking and possibly dog gears to hold that kind of power.
doesnt sound too streetable for me.

BTW, how you making that much power? was it the Unorthodox Pulley?

well its a MY99 rebuilt bottem end new rods+pistons lightened crank i'm match porting the head and i'm just getting ready to send the cams out to get a regrind done. new valve springs i'm using an T3/T04E turbo with an front mount intercooler setup. i just got the custom exhaust manifold finished and i'm supposted to be getting an Wolf3d EMS computer in a month or so. and thats about it for the motor.
I'm using GAB rev stroke II suspension , cusco sway bars and tie bars. ohh yeah
RX-7 fuel pump...(i hope it holds out..)
i just ordered some new 440cc injectors.
and i also ordered my TODA flywheel from japan(10lbs) that about does it.

yeah i'm taking everything apart this weekend and sending out the block for honing..

so i guess a clutchmaster won't hold then?

I don't think the ACT setup is stiff at all. It is very easy to engage very smoothly and softly, even slipping it a little if you choose. Sure, if I shift into gear and just drop the clutch (I mean really just let it go), it does go *bam*, but that's what it should do if you drop the clutch.

Question

What clutch would you guys recommend for a strong Natural motor, that will see the 1320 about 40 times a year? I launch at 6000RPM with as little throttle as possible and ride the clutch very quickly on first, with powershifting until 4th. Only at the strip, of course. Do you think a N/A setup will damage the tranny. I don't mind damaging the clutch, I don't think I can afford to fix tranny more than once a year. I prefer to not have to fix anything, though. I get 2 second 60 foot times and thats with only a cat-back and intake, on 87 octane.

The clutch/flywheel setup that "Rally Knight"
uses is a two stage 14.6 lb combo that has been great with their 400+HP motor...Its just that the tranny then becomes the weak link in your chain.

Sorry to be the doubting Thomas here, but I don't think you'll be getting 350-400hp from only 440cc injectors.

IIRC, in last months SCC mag there is a formula to calculate the possible hp based on injector size. Shiv's VishnuPerformance set-up is using 550cc injectors and they were guessing around 350hp from those injectors. With 440cc you should be getting around 280ish HP (still a lot of HP). At that level of power, I would still be concerned about the tranny though.

thanks for the injector input. this is kinda the first run so all my hp figures are wishful thinking.. i still would need to dyno the car and map the computer before any real claims...

anyway back to clutchs.. sorry i didn't want to go off thread here.(not that its up to me)

everyone seems to enjoy the ISR setup and the clutchmaster III's.. but mixed about the ACT.. for sure its allot stiffer..
well looks like everyone enjoys there own setups..
is there a clutchmaster IV? or 5 (sprung hub please! hehe)

Hi Guys,

It was buggin the krap out of me that I couldn't find the SCC article where Shiv calculated the potential HP based on injector size. SO...I found it on RC Engineering's webpage. All the info to calculate is there but to summarize, 440cc injectors will net you approximately 225HP. To get 400HP you would need approximately 790cc injectors and the 550cc injectors with the VishnuPerformance set-up should net you 280HP. Keep in mind these are all rules of thumb because I think Shiv's car is actually higher than 280HP based on what is being said on this board. Anyways, food for thought.

Imprezer,

What is the stock fuel pressure for the Impreza? 38/40lbs?

Ya, I knew something was missing there because when Shiv did the calc in SCC I believe he ended up somewhere between 320-350HP for the 550cc injectors.

I used the ACT for awhile, but it wouldn't hold the boost I wanted run. I then switched to the ACT race disk (4 puck), and within 1 days, nblew up the tranny (it is WAY to harsh for road use, totally on/off with lots of chatter since there are no springs. It did hold the power great, but was obnoxious to drive, and the tranny is not nearly strong enough to hold it. I then switched to a 1996 spec STi-RA tranny (since it uses the same interna;l ratio as the RS box...4.11), coupled with an STi V5 clutch and STi lightweight (14 lb) flywheel. It holds every ounce of boost I have thrown at it, launches great (no slip), and is literally like a stock clutch to drive. great part is that if/when I ever decide I need more, there are endless clutch options for the WRX tranny, whereas the RS one is very limited in selection. Given the scope of work you have on your car to date, I would recommend this route. But then again, you could always go clutchmasters/act till you find you need more (i found 15 psi to be the limit on the ACT), then swap to a WRX box.

FYI: Clutchmasters told me that the Stage III clutch will hold 370bhp on the MY00 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS. They also said that if it didn't hold the power, I could return it for a full refund.

I'm running far less power than that right now, but it's good to know I have some headroom.
