Door Loom questions (Getting speaker wire to the door from cabin)
I am having problems getting my aftermarket speaker wires to go from inside the cabin to inside the doors. I want to do it correctly and run the wire through the stock loom (or conduit, or piece covering the wires going from cabin to door, whatever you want to call it).
My fuse box is covering the entrance at the cabin side, and its too hard to reach in the door. Its been realllly cold lately, so I havent had motivation to fiddle with it. I don't have the fishing line that some people use, and I dont feel like buying it to run 4 sets of wires one time. Any other tips? One idea I had was to open the door, and remove the loom from the door (so its exposed to the outside). That way I would be able to fish the wires in with ease. I want to know how that piece gets removed, and how hard it would be to reinstall it. Thanks guys.

I'm not sure if yours is like mine, but heres how I did it in my WRX.
Pull the boot out of its hole on the car side and on the door side. Even then, I had to use a coat hanger, inserting it all the way thru the rubber boot. Attach the wire/wire's to the hanger and pull 'em thru. It should be simple to get the wire inside the door or inside the cabin from that point. Now getting the boot back in its hole's is another story. You just have to work at it. I used a large flathead to help push the boot back in. I hope yours is similar and my advice helps. If not, its just more practice at typing... |

Also note that it will be easier to pull the wires through the rubber boot if you lube them with a bit of soap, baby power, etc.

It took me 3-4 hours to do all the doors when I did my system, but it's definately worth while. You wanna keep those wires protected just like everything else. Just take a break every hour or so, so you don't get frusturated. It's a PITA. |

not sure how well this idea would work on these cars (cause the loom looks too thin and already full) but ive done this at work on many other cars....
get a piece of 10ga (sometimes 8ga works too) and start to feed it through on one side, you can use your other hand to squeeze/guide/manipulate the wire from the outside of the boot. if you get the 10ga through, tape the other wires to it, lube it up a bit and pull it through. 10ga and 8ga usually work for this cause as you try to push it through its less likely to fold and get stuck. ....but judging from the pics in the link the loom looks to thin for this method, i dont know though... |

Thanks for the help guys. And thank you very much for the link. I normally use search before anything (you have missed a lot of posts by me cause of that search), but for some reason didn't this time. My legacy is different and isnt split in the middle. I think im gonna try removing the loom from the doors and just do it that way. I was just wondering how hard it would be.

that's what i did. to tell you the truth, the hardest part is getting the grommets back into the holes. taking them out, and feeding through the wire is extremely simple. i mean think about it, all you have to do is pull on the grommet and it comes out, then attach the speaker wire to a hanger and pull it through. it's a pain when it comes to getting enough pressure on the sides of the "grommet ends" for it to 'pop' back in. although, it takes work to get them in, they don't "pop" in, you have to work them in by going around the edges with a screwdriver or whatever tool. |

i found the thread linked above when I did mine a few weeks ago... made things a lot easier.
Here's how I did it: Removed door panel (obviously) Disconnected wire harness plug from the inside of the car popped out the loom grommet from the door jam Fed wire coat hanger from inside the door down through the loom attach speaker wires, pull through. It's really not that hard to get the grommet in, just push really hard all the way around. |

I didn't have any trouble getting the grommets back in. Pam helps a lot, though I didn't use it on one and it went back in fine. Take the electrical tape off and pull the plastic sleeves apart, that makes it easier too.

I do not envy you in the least! The one I had all the fun on was a Matrix, the hardest to pull wires through I have ever done and then had to pull so many.
