Default New TireRack Tire Category: Extreme Performance

Just noticed that TireRack has created a new category of high performance tires - Extreme Performance. They define it as:

You want extreme dry street performance and are willing to trade some comfort and hydroplaning resistance to get it.

Not intended to be driven in snow or on ice, or at high speeds in deep standing water, these specially tuned tires combine big-block tread designs with aggressive tread compounds and reinforced internal constructions to emphasize dry road response, traction, handling and high speed capabilities for serious driving enthusiasts.

Currently considered "extreme" are the following:

BFG KD
Kumho MX
Yokohama Neova AD07

So now the "Max Performance" tires are the ones with both wet/dry capabilities, like the GSD3 and PS2.

Not that big of a deal IMO unless you're comparing tires in the same size on their website - you'll now need to check the new category in addition to the older max performance category to see all the high performance tires in a particular size.

Luke@TireRack has stated in the past that the manufacturers are the ones responsible for deciding which tires belong in what category - even though the categories themselves are created and defined by TireRack. Hopefully Bridgestone will decide to put the RE070 in the extreme category as well since it truly belongs there...

If it was just that part the RE92's would fit right in.

Just me or isn't the Kumho MX a decent rain tire?

The MXs are a very good tire in the rain, much better than the stock RE 92 I had on the '03 WRX. That being said, the MXs are supremely good on dry pavement. I've been driving the MX s in 17 225 45 for nearly 2 years. I just don't drive the tires in the snow.
