Default The piston height on my ROSS pistons are out to lunch!

Hey guys, For those of you who do know I am under going a EJ22T build for my WRX. I am using the stock crank and regular length eagle rods, I had a set of custom ROSS pistons made to over come the low CR people encounter when using the EJ22 block with WRX heads.

Yesterday I took the ring set out of the package to only find out that they are 88mm rings. ( ROSS pistons are 97mm) So after a few selected words i called up ROSS pistons and gave them my builders card number, just moments later the gentleman had told me that they had made a mistake and they had sent me the wrong rings... Noo *****... So i asked them if they could send me the proper rings, he then told me that the pistons were made to those rings and the only solution is to send them back and they will make a new set for me... That is great to hear, but i have already had my pistons ceramic coated. After speeking with the maneger they told me that they would have them coated for me as well for no axtra charge
So after all this was said and done I decided to install the pistons on the rods and then placed them in the block. When i rotated the assmebley to TDC this is what I ran into.

Here is a stock EJ22T piston to compare to...

I need some help by you guys to help me solve this problem. I call ROSS again today and emailed them the these pictures and they told me to resend what exacly i need and they will try to make everything right the secondtime around..
Does anyone know what type of custom piston is needed to run the ej22t with WRX heads and no special rod lenghts?

I really hope someone can shine some light on this dark situation....

More pictures.

Can i have them leave everything the same and just change the wrist pin location?
Here is a picture of the piston spec sheet, maybe someone will be able to tell where the mistake was made.

well, that sucks man...that's why I still say leave subaru's to subaru people....also why I started 3MI Racing for filling custom internal orders and helping guys out with them.

With that compression height it looks like they were expecting you to run some NA length rods with 79mm stroke crank. 30.5mm is the 'standard' EJ25 piston CH

Does any other piston manufacture make an off the shelf piston for this setup? I know Wiseco has a ej22t hybrid piston but that is designed for the 2.35L stroker. I did not think a basic ej22 build with WRX heads would be that complex.

Looking at the build sheet it looks like they used a 1.161 (29.4mm) compression height. I think it should be 33.5mm... 201mm deck height - 37mm for half the stroke - 130.5mm for the rod = 33.5mm. 29.4mm would leave them 4mm (0.157") low, its hard to tell from the pic, are they that far off?

Measure how short the pistons are from the deck, I bet its 2mm short, which would be a stroker piston....

wiseco has .20 over pistons for the ej22t - to be used with stock crank and rod length...

All i have to refer to is the pictures, I had the pistons packaged up and sent back to Cali in order to speed up this fudge up ASAP.
I can use what i have for information from the pictures and try to measure up the distance by just sliding the stock piston down the cylinder and use my camera to mimic the same location. Its not the best way but i might give a ball park figure.

Check the Wiseco chart here: http://www.wiseco.com/Catalogs/Sport...baruToyota.pdf

It shows a 33.25mm (1.312") CH for the EJ22. Note the 1.161" shown on your Ross spec sheet is listed for the EJ25 with the 131.5 rod.

To confirm you can measure the CH of you stock piston, the new ones should be the same assuming you did not want the deck clearance to change.

Do you think this piston is designed to be used in a hybrid stroker?

Also would i be better off trying to achieve the wrx ej20 piston deck height of .014- so i can use stock head gaskets with the wrx heads?

wiseco makes a lot of different pistons...

there are two for stock ej22t crank/rod - a .20 over and a .40 over

wiseco also makes a variation for an ej22t stroker...

It depends also on what gasket you plan to use. This is what you need:

Compression height 32.9 mm, dish 14cc for CR 8.0:1 with 1.00 mm Cometic EJ22T gasket
Compression height 32.9 mm, dish 9cc for CR 8.5:1 with 1.00 mm Cometic EJ22T gasket

Compression height 32.7 mm, dish 14cc for CR 8.0:1 with 0.80 mm 11044AA542 gasket
Compression height 32.7 mm, dish 9cc for CR 8.5:1 with 0.80 mm 11044AA542 gasket

There is a 3mm difference between the two compression height.

Yep looks like a stroker piston based on the EJ25D (like the wiseco stroker), 2mm for the difference in stroke and 1mm for thr difference in the rod length.

Unless you wanted to change the deck clearance on purpose as part of your CR adjustment the compression height should be the same as the stock piston.

DO THE STROKER!!
Get a 79mm dual thrust billet crank and call it good!

Or just a stock dual thrust crank. I was tearing down 3 motors today and randomly decided to see if my extra 79mm cranks were dual thrust. 3 were! So I will be doing a few stroker ej22 builds.

it IS that simple. Nothing else changes. You only need to do 2 things. verify the rod and main bearing clearances, balance the crank.

Everything else is the same.

But i have already had the hole rotating assembly including flywheel and crank pulley internally balance which took a lot of time because it had to be sent out and not to mention the cost... Also the crank had to be reground and that alone was $250. And what about crank and con rod bearings? I would love to have my car back on the road this season.

Call Ian @ Ross, kindly let them know they fuqued up. But have all your measurments laid out before you call.

As for balancing, no one that I know of uses a bobweight on a Subaru crank. So you should be good there.

Are there any other methods? if not does this mean it was not balanced?

I am really surprised nobody has made a comment on the picture with the turbo in it
