I am getting ready to graduate college this spring and I feel the need to move onto a more long term project car.
I have been in awe of the GTM since it was released and I have been toying with the idea of purchasing the kit. Obviously, this would be a long term project... around 1.5-2 years with steady work each week. But, I think it would be hella fun and interesting at the same time. Has anyone on here built one or know of someone who has? I have been reading www.ffrcobra.com and was just curious as to whether anyone in the suby world has made the transition.

Wow, I doubt you'll find anyone on here with experience with that particular kit/car. Anyhow, Car and Driver did a road test of one built with a LS7 in the latest issue. Cost for that car was around $60k. For that you get a car that is quicker than a Saleen S7 Twin Turbo.
However, to be honest, if I was going to drop $60k for a car, I'd hold out until the GT-R comes out. Or I might even just nab a Z06. I'd want a car that was thoroughly engineered and tested. Although building a kit car is probably a hugely rewarding experience, I would not want to build a hard-top supercar. My idea of the ideal kit car that I would want to build is something along the lines of a Caterham. An open-wheeled, weekend canyon shredder. |

It is EASY. Not over a year with steady night/weekend work. Seriously, If you do a basic job, it's all bolt together. The first one I worked on full time and took about 2-3 weeks, unpainted of course. The GTM is a good bit more $$$ as well as a little more involved IIRC. Can't imagine it woudl take 2 years based on their other products. Go for it. You only live once...pretty good way to spend your time! Last edited by REX8; 08-27-2007 at 04:34 PM. |

I highly doubt that anyone on here would have a GTM as only around 140 or so have been sold...I was just taking a shot in the dark. I guess I am curious as to whether anyone has any experience with FFR in general.
Oh and I was thinking an LS1 from a donor c5 vette. They seem to be everywhere and if would lower the price a bit. As far as other kit cars... I have looked around and this is the one that has been consistantly popping in my head. |

first poster to reply mentioned an ls7
Thanks for the info on the cobra. Just what I wanted to hear. From what I've been reading on ffrcobra.com it sounds like the GTM is a very different beast. I think from delivery date to a totally finished product is definitely over a year if it is just me working in my free time. |

I talked with someone a few weeks ago who had built one of the Cobra kits as well. Again, its different than the GTM, but much more affordable. He was able to finish his car in just over 5 months. He said he averaged 3hrs a night working on it. He bought a donor Mustang for parts for something like $2500. Total cost of the finished car was under $20k.
I might go that route myself one of these days, just so I'm not continuing to mod my daily driver! |

I've always wanted to build one of their Type 65 Coupes. One day!

THAT sexy beast is less than $20K and is supposedly quicker than a Saleen S7 TT?

You're a crackhead! I would take the Daytona Coupe replica any day of the week. When I saw one in person painted up in full LeMans regalia at a car show, my jaw hit the floor. There are few cars more beautiful than a blue Daytona Coupe with the white stripes and a proper old fashioned number plate
The GTM is nice, but I'd still take that car over the rest. |

1) What did you go to school for? 2) Were you top 5***37; of your class that you have the pick of the job market and companies beating down your door offering you $100K/year? Wow. Just, wow. Just a little more eye candy from an open house at FFR I attended last year: --kC |

My ears are ringing....KC must be talking about me.
roo21, where do you live (aka, fill in your profile). If you are creative and do all the work yourself, you can complete a GTM for $35k. It's about 50***37; more work/complexity than a Cobra. If you're on FFCobra, go ahead and ask in your area to see one local to you or visit the factory in Wareham, MA. I was going to build one a year ago. I visited 65 Cobra Dude, who lives about 10 miles from me and crawled all over that yellow one in KC's pix. My wife even climbed into....and out of the passenger seat. If I were to do one, I'd modify the cage as the bar above the driver window was less than an inch from my head. The seating position and feel of the inside of the car has to suit you. I would strongly suggest that if you want to build a GTM that you first do a Cobra. It's far easier and gives you a clearer idea of what it takes to build a car. It is not hard....just time and work. If you order a Cobra very, very soon, you can get the last of the sale. There have been several huge announcements on the FFR site (and secret links from FFCobra). They are going to be doing the following: 1) Offering a complete, non-donor kit minus engine/tranny for just under $20k. You still have to build/paint it. 2) They are doing a laser digital image of Dick Smith's Speed record Cobra (the one I replicated with my car and with KC's help) and will offer a replica of this body. 3) Offering a 289 slabside Cobra body option 4) Offer a 289 FIA Cobra body option The GTM is pretty much getting ramped up into production quantities now but because of the sale that's been going on, all kits are on about a 4-6 month backlog. The Daytona is probably 25% more difficult and $$ than a Cobra. The Daytona Spider has been killed. Mine is a Mk 1 and is about 8 years old now. I built it 100% myself. FFR has an open house every June and a Moochfest every February. Attend one! jack |

I dont see the reason why someone on this site would want to know all my personal info? To me thats too personal. My family started a business and it has done well.
I go to school at Miami University in Ohio. As for being in the top 5***37;, the year isnt over I have no school loans/debt and already have signed a lease on a home. I have a job lined up that will pay decent. No kids, wife, or bills other than a house payment/utilities/insurance/ and possibly the gtm kit. Finances are not the issue here... I would like to build a cobra and a GTM but I dont have the garage space at the moment. So... If I had to choose one it would be the GTM, so thats what im going to shoot for. |
