Outback & Outback Sport?
The 98 model is the outback sport the one that comes with sport spring or is it something else?

I thought we'd already been over this.
A "Subaru Outback" or "Subaru Legacy Outback" is built on the Legacy platform. A "Subaru Impreza Outback Sport" or "Subaru OBS" or "Subaru Outback Sport" is built on the Impreza platform. They are very easy to tell apart. The Legacy platform has a longer wheelbase and more interior room. It also looks different. The OBS is basically a hatchback and the Outback is a full size wagon. The OBS prior to 2002 had hood vents along with the traditional non-functioning hood scoop. The Outback prior to 2000 also had a hood scoop, but no vents. If the ad reads "Subaru Outback" then it generally means a Subaru Outback. If the ad reads "Subaru Outback Sport" then it generally means a Subaru Outback Sport. I do not believe that any Outback or Outback Sport had a "Sport Springs" option. These model lines are designed to have a raised suspension and tires which is the exact opposite of having a performance suspension. Last edited by remarcable; 01-15-2002 at 09:31 PM. |

What's weird about the Legacy and Impreza? My 99 Legacy and my 02 Impreza have almost identical whellbase, width, fuel tank amount, etc. It is almost the same. Wow! Seems they took that chassis from the Legacy, tightened it up a bit...and bam! An impreza chassis.

The first gen Impreza chassis was based off the Legacy. The wheelbase was shortened a couple of inches to make the car smaller. Other measurements were adjusted too. Overall length was about 5" shorter. Width and height were actually increased, resulting in more headroom but less shoulder room. Front seat legroom was better in the Impreza. Rear seat was better in the Legacy. Since the Impreza is now in its second generation, and the legacy is in its third, they're still pretty darned close - sizewise. |

* Many * fewer Outback Sports than Outbacks have been sold (probably at least a factor of 10), so the choice of used older Outback Sports may not be that big.

I thought I read on here a while ago that one of the members repacked his own wheel bearings and came to find out that was what was wrong with all those bad bearings, was how they were packed...
