Hey Unabomber. I've read that the Imprezas power steering is a self-pressurizing, self bleeding system. I have an 07 STi, that has some shutter when I turn the wheel. I recently have disconnected the power steering line near the turbo inlet to replace the inlet. Everything is reconnected and the resevoir is filled to near the cold max line. But after 2 weeks of driving and trying to prime the line with turning the wheel lock to lock a couple of times. I just cant seem to get the power steering to loose the shutter.

I wasnt sure if a power steering flush as a maintenance issue might clear up my steering shutters. What do you suggest?

I've been searching all day and have found differing information for my question.

When, if at all, do you need to replace the fuel filter in an 05MY WRX?

I've seen posts that said they are 'lifetime' filters and only should be replaced upon failure, but I've also seen posts saying around 60k miles. I'm almost to the 60k mile mark and would like to know if I need to tackle this. This would be the year they moved the filter to the actual gas tank housing.

Thanks in advance.

Another question.

on the same 05my wrx, are there any grease joints/nipples that need greased? I won't get a chance to get under the car again until this weekend, so I thought I'd post to see if someone could answer my question before I waste lots of time trying to find something that may not exist.

Thanks.

^^Read your manual; pretty sure its still 7500 for light duty or 3750 for severe.

Mechanic there checked it out and said it was just water in the gas line. He put some gasline anti-freeze in and told me to fill it up with high-test gas a couple of tanks and use fuel cleaners if I wanted. Said it should clear up.

I've filled it with high-test a few times now, tried some different additives, but problem still hasn't gone away. Still shudders/boggles when idling, even on a full tank. Feels less responsive on excellerating than I know it should, too.
Ask them to change the fuel filter too.

3750 is the mileage, if your average temp doesnt vary by more than 30 degrees 7500 will do. But I would never go that far

Scoobymods.com instructions

To make brake fluid swaps much easier consider speed bleeders and/or a vacuum brake bleeder. A speed bleeder is simply a replacement bleed nipple with a non-return valve in it. This allows you to open up the nipple and squeeze the old brake fluid though the system, without having to close the bleed nipple closed after every brake pedal depression. A Vacuum brake bleeder is a hand held vacuum pump that attaches to the bleeder. This allows you to hand bleed the brakes at the caliper instead of having to pump the brakes.

For the majority of owners, the OEM fluid is fine. This is especially true if you are using a big brake kit as the better your brakes, the less stress this puts on your fluid. That doesn't mean that if you use your brakes HARD during mountain driving or numerous autocross/HPDE events that you won't benefit from higher quality brake fluids though. For people seeking a "Stage 1" upgrade over the OEM fluid, popular brands include Valvoline Synpower and ATE Blue. For more advanced users, you will want to research the cost/benefits of the more expensive brake fluids.

For more advanced users:

To find out how much moisture is in your brake system, one can buy a brake fluid tester, a brake fluid moisture meter, or brake fluid test strips. Use these terms in google and you will see examples of these devices for sale. For high tech users, you can use a Kernco Digital Relflectometer to check the water content of DOT3 and DOT4 brake fluids. As a rule of thumb, if your brake fluid has reached 2-3% moisture, it's time for a change regardless of when you last changed it.

Background information:

This link contains a wealth of knowledge about brakes and brake fluids. Be sure to read the entire post as unlike the traditional "Unabomber FAQs", this one has lots of wonderful information throughout the whole thread.
Stoptech's Brake Fluid FAQ
Just had an interesting conversation with my local mechanic. I had him replace the rear brakes and asked him to flush/fill the brake fluid at the same time since it hadn't been done in 3 years. When I got the car back, he said he didn't do the flush/fill because "it looked fine and system is sealed anyway." He claimed that there is no need to change brake fluid on a street car and that often people will pay for this but it won't actually be done. I know Subaru does recommend regular brake fluid changes but OTOH the car seems to brake just fine with 3-yr-old fluid. This guy had no incentive to turn down my money so I'm sure he believes what he is saying. Comments?

I'm sure he believes what he's saying too, but he's not very knowledgeable. Sadly he's right about many people paying for this service without it actually being performed. It's impossible to inspect the water content of brake fluid without a special instrument.

The pumping action of the master cylinder and caliper pistons along with the heat cycling of the brakes will always let a little bit of moisture in. The system will work fine until you heat the brakes up, say by driving down a mountain, then the fluid will boil at a lower temperature because of the water its absorbed.

Most mechanics are equally clueless about changing brake fluid, my local Subaru dealer is among them. They think the only reason to bleed the brakes is to get air out of the system. Subaru recommends changing the fluid for a reason.

For good tech see:

And where does one find this Baldwin filter? I looked, but I do not speak German or whatever language the website was in...

Need 3 posts to add a thread, but I'll ask here anyways. I have a 2002 wrx. Got a CEL a few weeks ago. Figured it would go off after a few starts but it didn't I went to Autozone but their code puller said no link. Is there a fuse I should check to make sure the OBDII port is functioning? I check the fuse box in the car and under the hood but there is not one labeled as OBD

Can the o2 sensor be cleaned with the CRC stuff and does it help? Or if the o2 is not functioning properly, the only solution is a replacement?

Should I buy the Maintenance Package at the dealership? The finance guy there is talking me into it...supposed to be cheaper in the long run when I bring my car in for maintenance and oil changes. The package cost $1200 and covers the 15K, 30K, and 45K maintenance + 6 free services/oil change. What are your thoughts?

Question about 98-01 2.5 RS.

Sorry if it's been asked/posted but I couldn't find the specific answers I'm looking for. Just bought the car and wanted to replace transmission and rear differential fluid. Wanted to know how much fluid I needed to purchase for the transmission and the rear differential. And does the transmission and front differential share the same fluid?

Also, I've read that starting with MY2000 (which is what I have), the differential was an LSD. Is there a way I can visually confirm that from the outside of the case? And whether it is or isn't, Subaru genuine fluid should suffice? Quanitity?

Again, sorry if it's been asked. Thanks in advance.

That is helpful. I had to figure it out the hard way the other day when doing my stainless steel brake lines. And I mean hard way as in, brake fluid went EVERYWHERE. And that is NOT something you want on the car, the driveway, your clothes, nada.
