MEGA Northern California Road-trip Offical Post
This thread is for the folks going on the trip mostly, which will include a confirmation list and some futher details. The original post with alot of info can be seen here:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...hreadid=380374 Maps: http://community.webshots.com/album/78628919UsHvWK Official Confirmation list as of 7/21 Kostamojen AVATAR-X +1 BAN SUV's DDman jeffsw_02wrx +1 Bemani Lowball sperry JC JoltdudeUC I decided last night that dividing the cars during the 400+ mile trip up into three different groups would allow us to better keep track of each other. That, combined with a few radios and everyone getting everyonelses cell #'s will allow us to communicate better. My main reason for doing this is from experience leading lines of 10+ cars on windy roads, where I cant see more than 3 cars behind me at really any time. Plus, there are issues of other motorists and trying to coordinate such a line in this fashion. So what we will do is have 3 groups with 3 leaders who are responsible for constantly keeping track of the cars behind them. If one disapears, the lead car of that group can slow down and allow them to catch up or make the judgment to turn around and see if they are ok. Seperating the groups also allows each group to act as a seperate unit, with the ability to stop at any time for any reason without infering on the reast of the group. This will also make gas station stops TONS easier. However, we will still all meet up at Red bluff and the end of 36 and again at Fort Bragg of course. This also allows any group to take the lead or fall back if neccesary until the final part where my group, group A (the groups will be A, B, and C... Im having window vinyl decals made for this) needs to be in the lead so nobody has to sit around waiting to get into the beach house Now im going to designate who is in what group. I already have me and alan in the lead car of group A, and Dan and Kevin in the lead car for group B, but I need another pilot/codriver combo for group C that is skilled with navigating and meet n' drive management, and im also going to use this list to figure out how many cars we are going to have and if anyone needs to pair up with someone else for codriving... Group A Car 1: Kostamojen (car)/Bemani Car 2: Avatar-X +1 (car) Car 3: Lowball (car)/Joltdudeuc or ddman Car 4: X Group B Car 1: BAN SUV's (car)/DDman or Jolddudeuc Car 2: Sperry (car)/ JC Car 3: jeffsw_02wrx (car) +1 Car 4: X As of preliminary estimates I got about 10 cars and 18 people, so I need to revise this as I get the confirmations back from people. Some other details: Hot water is sparce at the Cabin, but showers every 30 minutes are possible. We will get up ~5am Saturday morning to eat (im bringing a bunch of doughnuts) and clean up the place so we can leave at 6am. (sperry and other Reno guys, show up around 5:45am) Water itself is an issue at Fort Bragg. Ive decided everyone who comes can stay here (exept Chewyguru if he decides to go down to Point Arena and stay there or bring anyone else along from our group) with sleeping bags and stuff, so no hotel renting is required. As for the water, showers will need 30 minutes BETWEEN them in order to allow the well to refill. Small scale water conservation will be required too (not leaving the faucet on for small things, etc.) in order to keep the well from pumping dirt (NOT what you want in the middle of a shower!!! ) Food: Dont worry about bringing food other than snacks for the codriver during the trip as Ill supply the breakfast saturday morning and there are alot of places to eat/get food from in Fort Brag (and a 24 hour gas station down the street from the Cabin) Also, bring lots of water though and maybe some gatorade to keep yourself hydrated during the drive. Extra: Everyone print up those maps so you know where to go. I will start PMing/Emailing addresses to the confirmed people today. Last edited by Kostamojen; 07-30-2003 at 02:38 AM. |

Alright, I still havent gotten responces back from CupertinoSteve, eastbaysubaru, and Chewyguru, and soundwave wants to ride with someone from the bay or he wont be going and Lowball needs to figure out what to do about co-driver/driving
But at this rate, we might only need two groups so thats good. Perhaps anyone else who wants to go who reads this can go too if they want? |

I am strongly considered going to the Marin Beer meet thingy (sans beer since I gotta drive straight home that night) since it was largely scheduled for the 3rd so that we could all go if we wanted.

That beer thing seems a waste of even more driving, cause you could still hang around for awhile and do all the stuff thats up in Fort Bragg.
Chewy: Are you bringing your G/F with and coming to the cabin or just meeting us up there at Fort Bragg? I wasnt sure about that part since you knew someone up there. As for a BBQ in point arena, it might actually be easier for you to come up to Fort Bragg and have the BBQ lunch there (we have one there) We could also go down to captain flints or jenny's giant burger, or even that pizza place behind Rite Aid (d'ruilio's + sons Is the name but I cant spell it right ). Otherwise for Sunday I plan on going to to a beach or two, maybe the botanical gardens since I can get everyone in there free (family pass) or maybe hike up to the waterfall at russian gulch state park. Any of that stuff is good, including going down to Mendicino to check it out and see where Murder She Wrote was filmed As for the group stuff, we have 7 cars as of right now. So that means only two groups. Ill have to wait a couple days to see whats going on with that... |

Alrightly, we have 7 cars right now and still no responce from 4 people... So as it stands we need only two groups.
Lance (lowball): I was thinking that if you got tired, maybe one of us could switch off codriving and drive your car on an easy section to give you a brake if need to do that. |

I am not on the list Steve, but you can count me out. I got your e-mail, and my g/f probably wouldn't have too much fun, so I am out. Thanks though.

Rock Slide Shuts Down Highway 70
Is this going to be a problem for us if the road isn't opened by the 2nd?

I already checked about that road closer, its not where we are going.
BTW, I had to fiddle with the groups a bit to even them out. Only 6 cars right now though, unless im missing anyone? Last edited by Kostamojen; 07-26-2003 at 12:27 AM. |
