my friend doesn't have the patience to do the search, and i am always interested in doing a little bit of research. His oil line to his turbo was leaking and he ended up running out of oil. He says it runs real rough now and he already had hopes of putting a stronger engine in. I did a search initially for the EJ20G and didn't find much concerning why so many people liked it. All I found were mods and such.

the way to find a closed or open deck blocks are to look down in front of the starter hump on the engine block and look for the casting lines with 2 little nubs sticking up the open deck ones are smooth!!!

wow, those pictures are perfect. Thank you so much.

I had a long chat with my friend and he said he was only looking for horsepower in the 350-450 horsepower range. He said he wanted that much power to the wheels. Is 25% a good number to use to calculate loss of efficiency through drivetrain? If the EJ257 block is stout to those numbers, I will tell my friend that he is wasting his money.

I'm in kind of the same boat as far as wondering wtf an EJ20K is, I recently purchased a 1998 WRX STi Type-R coupe w/ an ej20k and while I know a bit about ej205/255 engines I'm slightly befuddled by my new ej20k.

EJ20K is the evolution of the EJ20G. Heads are the main difference. They switched from a HLA (hydraulic lifter) under the cam bucket on the EJ20Gs to solid shim adjusted bucket. This allowed the engine to rev higher reliably. Some versions have the shims under the bucket where they cannot be "spit" out, for one more level of reliability. Cams are generally "hotter" on the EJ20Ks also.

The EJ20K was the last of the phase 1 motors to go into the Impreza. Phase 2 was a minor block redesign with the biggest change being moving the crankshaft thrust surface from the center (#3) journal to the rear (#5) journal. Phase 1 motors end with a letter (EJ20G, EJ25D, etc.) while phase 2 motors end with a number (EJ205, EJ251, etc).

EJ20 closed-deck block is one of the strongest Scooby starting points around and one of that was equipped with oil squirters to aid pistons cooling. Closed-deck blocks are the strongest blocks of Subaru and endure high boost and high horse power (700+hp). Heres a pic of a jdm ver7 ej207 and a ej20g.

are you sure thats an ej207 on the left? that doesnt look anything like my motor and i have a jdm ver 7 sti limited.

There's a pretty short list of Subaru engines that used a semi-closed deck block...

ej207, ej208, and the ej257. and i think that the motor on the right is not the ej20g but in fact the ej22 motor from the 22b, it used a closed deck block with ver 4 sti heads. that motor was crazy!!! IMO I dont think that there was a better 2.0-2.5 litre turbo motor ever made from the factory.

Oil squirters indicate it's most likely a Legacy motor. Either USDM EJ22T or EJ20G. (I'm guessing 20G, from the bore size) I'm not sure if the early STIs/RAs still had the squirters.

EJ22G from the 22B did not have oil squirters.

I'm sure Matt will speak up if I missed anything.

The cross hatching on the front were the block halves meet! Are they STi or RA motors??? my Ej22 closed deck block did'nt have them but my STi Ej20G block has them! was that a way of denoting higher from lower performance Engines at the factory????

The Ej22T's don't have it.

I've only ever seen it on 1995 STI Ej20G blocks. All of the ones I've seen earlier than 1995 that were closed deck didn't have it either.

Oil squirters have nothing to do with STi engines. In fact, Reddevil has even confirmed that he's found them on open deck Ej20H blocks.

i closed the oil squirters up on both my builds. Runs fine, im more interested in bearings getting oil at 8200rpm than pistons get arbitrarily splashed

Exactly. I suspect Subaru drew the same conclusion since there are no squirters on a 22B.

do the oil squirters run off the crank main??? that is probly the earlier turbo engines burned through rod bearings!! THAT Happened to my 22T and I think that it is starting on my STi tooo!!! (Ihope not) what do you have to do to block tham (if that in fact will bring better crank pressure??

Why would you have the open deck blocks in 2nd and 3rd?
