How can one tell more information on the car without the VIN plate... just the VIN etched on the firewall? I have what is from my understanding a 93 WRX, but the half cut came without a VIN plate.

Check the code on the sticker with the list in a quote on the previous page. If it's not on there, drop me a line. Oh and if you can get your VIN before you get access to the block, post it here and I'll be able to tell more.

I know which sticker you guys are talking about, however my engine did not come with that sticker intact.
My VIN is GC8-006986. I was at the car last night and didn't think to look at the bellhousing to see if it was finned or not. And the turbo heat shield is still there so I haven't seen what kind of turbo it has. |

Let's make this easy. Pull up the carpet and get us the part number and alphanumeric code off the ECU.

I believe that it is either a 2C or a 3S. I've got a few ECUs at home so I can't remember exactly which one came off this car

Well, the 2C ECU would be the one from the 1993 WRX GC8. A 3S is from a wagon and a couple of years later. Looks like you've got a standard 240ps '93 WRX cut there.

Oh, sweet.
You were right about the ECU being a 22611AA810, but I didn't see a U8 on it anywhere, just a 2C. I don't know where I was thinking of a 3S from, since the other one I had at home next to it was a B5... all this ECUs |

Oh OK the AA810 ECU's I've seen had the U8 code, so I learned something again today
Matt, do you know the difference between 2C, U8 etc. although they have the same factory part number? |

I don't know this, but I suspect that one is 1993 and the other is 1994. Same thing tough, AFAIK.

Perhaps the difference in ECU codes also correlates with the engine codes Marnix suggested for my car. Unfortunately my motor has no sticker.?

Just a small bump...
I've recently purchased a JDM 1990 Legacy GT auto with the VF-10 and I can't see any cross-hatching on the top of the block, so I'm going to assume it's OD. Which is interesting since my GT manual of the same year had the hatching. Chassis codes for the manual and auto respectively are: BF5-023639 and BF5-023393. The only differences between the two is the transmission, ABS and cruise control. Other than that they are the same. |

Not all early Legacy's had the closed deck block. All EJ20 turbo's and EJ20 non-turbo's build before 1991-7 have closed deck blocks, after that I believe only all manuals and only some autos.

Both were registered in 1990 though, and I had the build date checked on the manual for ****s and giggles. I know it was 1990, however I always get the build month for the manual GT and my old turbo Leone Coupe confused. One was March, the other was November and I can't remember which one was which. I could just get the build date checked on the auto if I felt like it.

All the post 1999 JDM EJ205 engines have the higher compression ratio (9.0) so make them less suitable for US fuels.
Want a reliable engine? Rebuild your own (presumably failed) engine with forged rods and pistons. |

I fail to see how this information is useless. Unlike USDM turbo engines, specifications are far from straight forward or consistent for us. But thanks
