Talking I didn't realize new outback looks like impreza!

Guess what I saw in a NY Auto Show insert in my local paper!

It's amazing how Subaru-ignorant people are. The article only talks about the Outback (not OBS) and never mentions the Impreza L sport wagon shown.

Isn't the wagon in the pic an old sportwagon? The new one doesn't have the crossbars on the roof, and is the new age Impreza.

Hey Fishguy...we meet again!
I know the OBS is an Impreza, as I stated above, "The article only talks about the Outback (not OBS)". Try looking closer at the article, it never mentions Impreza OR OBS...only Legacy and Outback. "The legacy outback looks nothing like it"-I agree!
Heyyy, look what I see in my 2001 Impreza catalog:

P.S. - I work in the research profession, can you guess?

The car pictured is a post-1997 first-generation Impreza L 2.2 Wagon. The "SportWagon" description of the Impreza wagon body causes a lot of confusion between it and the "Outback Sport." I used to sell Subarus, so I know of what I write. (Imagine trying to work a close deal with a guy who wants a "Sportwagon" at $100 over invoice, then when it comes time to pick up the car he thinks he's getting an Outback Sport! Don't ask - long story/phone deal, etc.)

Don't bother trying to pinpoint the exact year of the actual car shown. There is so much CGI manipulation in the Subaru brochures that even if you could pick out which model year brochure it was, the car could be from any year that had the same body/trim shape.

Take those 15" wheels. They were standard equipment on the 1990 Legacy Turbo, and they are probably still available as accessories at your local dealer. The wizards Photoshop-in new wheels and body colors on the same photos in the new brochure every year. They might blurr the road or spin-blurr the wheels for action shots.

Actually.... Isn't that Imp wagon in the pic a SECOND gen? First generation Imprezas are the GF8 chassis cars or the MY93 thru MY97. Second gen came in 1997 with the MY98 2.5RS and the other GC8 chassis imprezas. Third gen is the new-age impreza and new-age WRX. I'm not sure on the chassis number, but its an obvious change over the headlight, hood, interior center console and rear suspension tweaks that seperate the GF8 from the GC8.

I think those differences are enough to classify the new-age WRX as a THIRD GEN. The 1rst gen are the only to get the 1.8L or EJ18 engine. Second gen got shorter gearboxes and made the EJ22 standard in the lowest trim and introduced the newer version hood scoop and vents, headlights, rear stabalizer bar, and the NA EJ25 into the mix.
The center console in the GC8 is neater, albiet harder to take apart for radio installs than the older GF8, but the center arm rest is STANDARD over the optionated and smaller version for the GF8. Not to mention the tachometer and spedometer switch places when you switch chassis. OH, and GF8s came with DUAL in-dash cupholders!

Switches from the ECU design and mass air flow sensor locations were made between the GF8 and GC8, not to mention the horsepower increases in the J and E-spec WRXs or Euro Sports. In fact.. I think the STi ver I and II cars were GF8 chassis while all the later (2002 and 2003 excluded) were GC8. GC8s get an updated rear-diff, and the MY2001s and later get a limited slip version as the chassis continues to evolve away from the legacy platform.

GF8s did come with the option for a power antennae... I'm not sure the GC8s came with that. I think Subaru got lazy after 1996, and ditched the idea of the Impreza becoming a mainstream semi-lux car like the Accord has become for Honda.

Front bumper beams were different (i think)between 1rst and 2nd gen imprezas too. I think that's most of it.. OH.. For all you OBS owners.. You KNOW you got a GF8 OBS when your two-tone car has NO hood scoops or vents, and doesn't have an impreza badge. The badge came AFTER the switch between chassis. Pre 2nd gen OBS got yellow sticker that said impreza, with another sticker of tire tread and the word OUTBACK in the middle of it. That's funny too, because I don't think the REAL Legacy outback came out until 96 or 97, but my MY95 has it. Also had (had because it's been swapped out) the raised suspension too! Another funny thing is that out of the GF8 wagons, the "Outback Editon" (as it's referred to in KBB)has the highest resale value, but only came in a 1.8L until MY97. There was a 2.2L at the time, but it still falls short of the Outback Edition. Go figure.

IIRC, There is only two gen's of Impreza's.

The USDM 93-01 used the: GF8,GC8 desgination
USDM 02-XX uses :GDA, GBA?

The trim and minor things changed in 97, but chassis code is same..Strange thing..My 99 2.5 had a GF8 Designation. I think the GC8 was used only on JDM WRX models.

Ahhh.. Okay.. I wondered about that. When I was selling Subes, a couple Auto RSs were GF.. I thought it was error or something. Interesting indeed.

Hmmm, looks quite clear to me, maybe your eyes are tired.

Fishguy- I guess my topic is a bit misleading if you don't see the message icon.

What are the rest of you guys talking about? I have both pictures in front of me and they look so identical that I thought the one in the 2001 brochure was cut/cropped and dropped into a new background for the article.

Fuzz541- I guess even Subie buyers can be subie-ignorant! Man! Buying a car and not knowing what car you're buying. Duh.

Isn't that a picture of a Subaru? It looks nothing like the outback... I just watched it on TV last night where their camp got flooded out and they lost their food...

Looks nothing like the outback.
