Who uses Uncle Scotty's cocktail?
Im about to change my tranny fluid and go with the uncle scotty cocktail "1qt gm synchromesh, 1 qt lightweight shockproff, and 2qts of castrol hypoyc 80w90" Ive done a search and found people loved it at first, how is it after some miles are put on it? Also what did you end up using in the rear? Thanks.

No long-term feedback here, but I've been using it for about a month now and have been happy with it.
Used Redline 75W-90 in the rear and to set the record straight, his "official" cocktail uses HypoyC 75W-90, which I've been told is no longer being produced. |

Yeah, I'm using it in my 98 Leg GT. Works great. I'm actually on my second batch, if you will. I believe its actually helping me prolong the life of my tranny....I think some synchros are on the way out....
Typical colder climate drawback.....thick when tranny is cold (on colder mornings, molasses in winter)...but onces its warmed (luckily in this case, I have a 1 hour commute, so its plenty warm for at least 3/4 the drive) its slickity snick! Thanks Scotty!! GGT |

I'm currently running the official blend(remainder 75w90 HypoyC), have been for 13,000 miles. My transmission is worlds more liveable now.

worked really well until my first gear lost a tooth.
I don't think it was related however. -J |

I do - starting today...Using the Coastal 75-90 version. I only have about 10 miles on it, but it seems pretty good. Definitely no worse than stock.
Wifey took it to the store, I asked her how she liked the new transmission fluid. "Oh, it seems to start better." Uncle Scotty, you didn't tell me it helps that!! |

Ive been using it for over 6 months and it has done wonderful for me, even in very cold weather. I use mobil 1 in the rear end.

Check http://www.redlineoil.com for a dealer near you. If there isn't one, you'll probably have to mail order. :/

i had grinding into first gear (even from a stop) and the parasitic 3rd=>4th grind.
but after changing my fluid last friday using scotty's concoction, i can shift into first at 25 mph like buttah. (i did this for test purposes only, i never usually downshift to first). but you get what i mean, its a ****load easier to get into first. the tranny slides into place sometimes with a little "notch" but never grinding. so far so good. oh yea, went to subaru challenge on saturday, the car did 8 runs total and on the commute back (170~ miles) it still felt smooth. however i used: Pennzoil Synchromesh Redline Lightweight Shockproof (blue) and 2 bottles of Castrol HybpoyC 80w-90 i'll hopefully check in half a year - a year form now and still be happy. so far so good |

I have been using it all season (7,000 miles) and love it. I bought my car used, and the fluid in there was fine (probably OEM), i could downshift into first at 20mph with no problem, but had a 3-4 or 4-5 grind every now and then. I then switched to Royal purple, the biggest mistake ever. I ground all over the place and could never put it into first. I then tried going back to Oem, Valvoline 75W-90 to cure the grinding, but the RP did its damage and still ground. I finally, this spring, busted out the cocktail, and now its better than it started. I can downshift any gear, no more 3-4 or 4-5 grinds, and its smooth. Love it.

I had a problem with 3rd gear grinding on my car so went from straight dino to dino with almost a quart of synchromesh. I got worried that the synchromesh wasn't GL-5 rated, though. Neither is the shockproof for that matter.
There have been many reports on here and there are many folks using Uncle Scotty's cocktail. I haven't heard of one report where someone had a problem with their tranny nor their front diff. because of the non GL-5 rated stuff. Still... Subaru states that only GL-5 stuff should be used for fluids so I ended up draining my stuff out and am now using Amsoil Severe Gear 75W90 instead. I've had good luck with it so far. |
