I can see your new here.

I'm sure there are plenty of reviews that will say quite the contrary.

yeah, this is like the TopGear comparison. Clarkson went on and on saying how the STi was crap, ugly, bad handling and how the EVO was sharp, pretty, and hero making.

Then the STi went and lapped faster.

The EVO seems sharper, the STi is actually quite good.

Now the STi is ugly, but I'd rather not be in the shop all the time with a mitsu.

I think that most of the time lost in the Stig's laps were off the line. The STi has the MR beat by almost a second to 60 and the MR (well what ever the SST equiped car with 300HP is called in the UK) made up all but .02 sec at the end of the lap. I think had they used the MT 300hp version of the EVO it would have been quicker as it has been in most other tests....As to the reliability, I currently own a Subaru and a Mistu and have owned a Mitsubishi since 1990 and have had the same number of reliability issues with both..none.

I personally don't think the STi is a drop dead pretty car but it is agressive looking although they really should do something about the lines around the front bumper and grill. With the new WRX/STis I wonder if Subaru intentionally left performance on the table knowing that owners interested in warranty coverage would buy the SPT parts (ie more profit).

Out of the box, the EVO is more put together but, unless you have a good relationship with your local Mistu dealer, most things that you would like to do, you can't without voiding your warranty. Why Mitsu has not taken Subaru's, Ford's, Dodge's, Honda's etc lead and use their Ralliart brand to make tuner performance parts is beyond me.

I think I would have been happy with either car....but the Mitsu dealer let me test drive without plopping down $500 for a test drive....so, EVO it was.

Someone brought the new evo by my dealership, it looked really bad, I gotta say. Fugly as hell, and interior seemed very cheap and nasty. It sounds like it drives well, but ugh. Makes me enjoy my 08 sti all the more

News flash: The Evo is faster on a track, the STI is faster everywhere else, and has vastly more cargo capacity, whilst being a whole bunch uglier. Choose depending on your needs & wants. Either one driven at more than 50% of their abilities on public roads should cost you your license.

Funny thing, the youtube video even used a quote from that episode in the comparison - in fact, the part when Clarkson was raving about the EVO he was comparing the FQ360(?) with a base STI. More evidence of trollishness

Heh - that video was trash - not just because it takes quotes and places them out of context but because a car choice should be a personal thing and not based on a stranger's opinion.

I won't say the video was trash but I do agree. The choice of which car to get is a personal one. YOU have to go out and test drive each one and see which one suits YOU better (not the media)..... peronally i like the look of the Evo more but I Like the overall persona of the STi due to the quirkiness, the feeling when i get in it and start it up, and last but definitely not least... the Safety.

I think they are both 5 star rated. Really, it comes down to personal preference...or in my case, what you are allowed to test drive.

Getting back on topic:

The OP's video: [YouTube: WRX STI vs. Evo X: What's the REAL Story?] by TheGrid23

States the following:

Nearly every car mag agrees that the new Evo beats the STI. So I thought I'd make a video about that.

The Evo X is just as fast, cheaper, and handles much better than the STI.

Plus it looks better! The new STI looks like a KIA on steroids. Poo!
The video itself is a slideshow made up of '08 STI and EVO X images between pro-EVO snippets from online and print magazine articles and TV shows where the two cars faced off in a comparison test.

So, TheGrid23 is accusing Subaru of paying Garage419 for a "phony 'tuner video' to 'prove' that tuners prefer the STI over the new EVO."

Lets look at Garage419's video: [YouTube: EVO X or New STi? Let the Tuners Decide - Part 1] & [Part 2]
Quote:

Rob Bonamichi (owner of Auto Master AMR): Correct.

Matt: Which, as a tuner, do you prefer to work on?

Rob: I prefer to work on the Subarus.

Matt: Why's that?

Rob: Well, the ECU for one thing. There's a lot more parameters in it so you can fine tune the car. With the EVOs.. they are pretty generic. There's not a lot of complication to tuning it.

Matt: Do you have to swap out the entire [ECU] to tune [the EVOs]?

Rob: No. You can reflash it, but a lot of the things such as knock correction, which the Subarus have where the EVOs do not. You know, so there are a lot of key features in there that help the Subarus.

Matt: From a consumer's standpoint,.. if you want to buy a car, one of these two cars, with the idea of, "I'm going to tune this thing, and I want to get the most"... I mean, these cars are "bang for your buck" cars, that's the entire purpose of the car..

Rob: Exactly

Matt: .. you know what I mean. They skimp on a lot of the frills and make it up in power and handling.

Rob: Right.

Matt: So, if I wanted to get a turbocharged 4 cylinder car and I want to put a bunch of money into it... with which car is my money going to go further?

Rob: (considers for a moment) You would go further in the Subaru than you would the Mitsubishi. Reason being? Well, a big part of it is that the drivetrain is very weak on the Mitsubishi to begin with... and anyone who is a DSM lover knows that. With the Subaru, we've tested their 6 speed tranny at well over 800 horsepower and have not had any problems.

Matt: So, you're talking about.. to make big power in the EVOs you're going to be rebuilding bottom ends, rebuilding trannys..

Rob: Yes.

Matt: .. and diffs and stuff like that...

Rob: Of course.

Matt: ... whereas these (pointing to the STI) are a little more.. burly?

Rob: These are a lot of more burly... and with little mods we can get, you know, 100+ out of the vehicle. Safely? You can double the horsepower of these vehicles and not have to dive into the motor.

Matt: Oh really?

Rob: .. and pass emissions, you get great gas mileage and not have to worry about anything.

Matt: Really?

Rob: Yes.

Matt: Alright.
So, a guy who owns a tuning shop and owns an STI says that he prefers to tune Subarus to Mitsubishis because of the reliability when modded and large gains from simple mods... and some YouTubing EVO fanboi (who can't even figure out how to post his video as a response to the video he's attempting to reply to) is using the press's comparisons between completely stock cars as evidence that this guy doesn't know what he's talking about?

Awesome. Please post more idiotic YouTube user comments (videos preferably, that makes them practically peer reviewed) in the News and Rumors forum, aboogabooga. That was a great way to get my daily dose of internet stupidity.

well...maybe these guys are biased or just not good with Mistubishis
Stock Evos on the most of the dynos I have seen are in the neighborhood of 250-260WHP. Alot of guys are getting 50whp from a reflash alone.

below are some with a bit more....

Even thought I dont even own a 2008 STI, LOOK AT THE EVOLUTION PICTURES those pictures are with VOLKS rims or whatever the rims are. Slap some VOLKS and flush it out with some coilovers who wins the look contest ? I think the STI DOES.

I really really really dislike the look of the new Evo. I'm puzzled every time I hear people say it's the better looking car but that seems to be the consensus.

Has nobody watched the first episode of this new season of Fifth Gear? Tiff Needel and Jason Plato have a shootout with the STI and EVO FQ330. The STI handily wins one portion of the test (the EVO is so slow off the line and reacts so badly to the handbrake that Tiff spends his time during the slalom screaming at the car for being so slow) and practically ties the road course with Plato driving the STI sideways the whole time.

What do they declare in the end? The more expensive, heavier, less sideways car with the buggy gearbox is "clearly the better track car".

While I've never heard of anyone, outside of the biggest fanbois on NASIOC, say that that the STI is a better stock car in a track environment... the OP's youtube video accuses Subaru of paying for praise. (no, I haven't watched the 'tuner video' it's supposedly a response to.) The Fifth Gear segments really have made me wonder just who's paying for lip service.

I saw this video as well.....The SST just has limitations. Again, why not test the MT....I think the SST looks very interesting and I bet the EVO XI has all these issues fixed...one reason I bought the MT.
