Few quick snaps of the badges installed. Waiting on the matching steering wheel badge to come in to finish it off.

Mod Update

Volks - Still awaiting on the arrival email. I was originally told 4-6 weeks on April 30th. Then end of June. So here we are July 1st and no updates. Getting a little antsy and starting to think of some other wheel options at this point. If I don't recieve a update by the end of the week, then I might just cancel my order and go with something more readily available.

OEM+ Tailights - I couldn't ever bite the bullet hard enough to go with any aftermarket version, so I am getting some OEM tails modified to go with my OEM+ style. They should be in at the end of the week or early next week, so I will be sure to update when they come in.

Carbon Fiber Door Handles - Same guy doing my tails is doing a set of interior door handles in real CF. No wraps here. Should be a nice touch to the interior to finally rid all of the chrome.

Black/White Steering wheel emblem - Looks like USPS tried to deliver on Saturday, but I wasn't there to sign. Should be in the mailbox today, so I may have a small update tonight.

Awesome, will be looking forward to seeing the updates!

Having just picked up my STI tonight, and trying to be good and responsible about spending even more money, I really shouldn't be keeping tabs on this thread, but you know how that goes...

Good call on skipping on the aftermarket tails, I wanted to get a set of Subispeed ones but the failure rate of them scared me away.

And wait on the Volks! You know you won't be happy settling.

What’s being installed: OEM blacked out tail lights

Mileage: 22,716

I’ve been in a constant battle with myself on what to do with the taillights on this car. I loved the look of the v1 subispeed tails, but reading the issues everyone seems to have was something I didn’t want to deal with. Besides, the OEM design is pretty clean. However, they had the wrong shade of red. They pop and stand out too much every time I saw the car against lapis. So I did some digging around and found that people have been cutting them open, painting the inside bezels, and sealing them back up. I’ve done dozens of headlights before, but never a taillight.

I hit up a buddy who has done his tails before and he agreed to take on the project for me. We found a brand new set of OEM tails from a 2019 STI. Snagged them for a good price and had them sent right over to my buddy. He took some great progress pictures of the whole process so you I could see the steps it takes to achieve this mod.

I am so pleased with the outcome of it all as it really ties the rear end much better. It blends with the car and gives it a much more aggressive and clean look. Finally can check this mod off the list!

New taillights look so good. Flows much better than the bright red. Another great OEM+ mod.

Looks great! It’s the minor details that set them apart. I’ve been in the same boat on tails since I got mine, not in love with any aftermarket ones and concerned about the quality. This is a great option.

I do enjoy the subispeed v1 tails, but the issues they have are pretty nuts. Some people have replaced them 4 times already. Granted their CS has been great with them, I don't didn't want to go through the headache.

Unfortunately, this isn't an option that one can go out and buy as it requires some seriously custom work. I have done dozens and dozens of headlight retrofits, but never had the courage do cut taillights open. I am glad it's done though and found a source that was able to get it properly. I've already had multiple people ask me for them whenever I do get rid of the car haha. Had them on for 3 days so far...

Small interior change. Trying to rid all of the silver and chrome on the car. I was going to snag the OEM black dials, but decided to throw a coat of paint on and see how they turned out. Pretty pleased with the results and saved 70 bucks.

Got quite a few parts coming in this week so I will be sure to update.

Dials look like they came out perfect. Smart to give the spray paint a try before shelling out the cash on new dials. I'm still going back and fourth weather or not I like my Billetworkz ones. The illuminated indicator light is soo much harder to see than OEM. I might go back and paint my OEM dials and give them a try like you did.

Thanks man. Yeah give it a go! I said to myself I’ll try and paint them and if they don’t turn out the way I want, I’ll just pony up and get the OEM ones. But to my surprise, they came out really nice. It’s such a small detail, but it really makes a big difference.

Mod update

Did a few mods over the past couple days. These have been a few things that I have had my eye on for a while an decided to bite the bullet and get them done. Definitely minor things, but they really make the car complete to me.

First up was finishing up the steering wheel. Having the alcantara wheel, OEM sti black bottom trim, and the steering wheel badge done the side pieces felt a little incomplete. I have been eyeing up the OLM carbon fiber trim pieces for quite some time, but could never justify the price. Decided to go for it since I enjoy this stuff and I am glad I did. These pieces are extremely nice. much nicer than I anticipated. In fact, they are actually made of carbon fiber! Usually these aesthetic things are just plastic pieces hydro dipped. However, if you see the picture below of the back side, you can definitely see the weave and actual CF. The pieces slide perfectly over the oem parts and hug ever corner perfectly. I typically don't like the stick on type stuff, but this is so well made and the tape is insanely strong. It makes the whole steering wheel feel more quality and adds a whole other dimension to the interior. I was afraid that adding the pieces on top would interfere with the buttons and recess them too much, but it actually makes the buttons look and feel more at home. Still very easy to press and do not look out of place at all. I decided to not put the bottom trim piece on as I preferred the black trim with the red STI logo. It matched the top wheel stripe and flowed better to me. So, if anyone wants the bottom CF trim, let me know!

Next mod I decided to tackle was the Subispeed S4 Fog light bezels. These always were in my cart, but removed them and said I would get them later. Decided to try them out and see if I could start making this front end a but more aggressive. I was growing a bit tired of the yellow DRL's that I have been running for 2.5 years and wanted to different/updated look. I did read some feedback that people have had some issues with these, but they were cheap enough that it wouldn't be the end of the world. Hopefully these last a while as the overall look is something I am a fan of.

I opened them up and surprised at the nice finish they had on them. I assumed they were just a gloss black, but they have a nice metallic to it. I believe it's the same black that is used on the black color choice of the car. Install was fairly simple, although it took some trial and error to get them working the way I wanted. I wanted them to run as DRL and turn off when I turn the low beams on. After some fiddling, putting the add a fuse in the 15 amp HI beam spot did the trick. They turn on when I put the ebrake handle down, turn off when the low beams are on, and turn on with the high beams (extra light). I also disabled the DRL's in the headlight (unplugging module) so the S4 LED strip is my new DRL. The overall look makes the front end look much nicer with the better finish. I am jealous of all the 18+ bumper people, so this will hold me over until I can get that done. I made sure all the wires associated with this install was tucked away and hidden so there was no visibility in the engine back that something was done. Wanted it as clean as possible. Ran the passenger side under the radiator supports and along the trim. The drive side wire is ran under the rain guards on the side of the fender. Lastly, the DRL module is double side tapped to the frame rail by the washer fluid tank. All wires were zip tied and tucked away. Sorry for the lack of pictures. I got invested into the install and forgot to snap progress pics. If anyone wants to see any specific part of the install, please let me know and I will be able to provide shots.

I also updated the rear LED reverse lights. Since having my tail lights done, the white/silver LED's stuck out like a sore thumb. I looked around and found some black cree LED bulbs to blend in with the black bezels. They still stick out a little bit, but they are more hidden than the other bulbs I was running. I am still trying to find a solution on a better LED that is more discreet, but these will work for now.

I have a black perrin SI drive knob coming in today, so I will be sure to update this post with that and my thoughts. Small, I know. but worth it since it removes one of the last pieces of chrome on the car!

Lastly, I am finally getting to my headlights. Picked up a set of of diode dynamics C lights (switchback - not going to use this function). I wanted something that is going to last, yet match the new S4 drl bezels. I asked around and everyone said to go with DD. Snagged a set from my go to light source (lightwerkz). I also got a set of dark smoked corner reflectors to rid the ugly orange. I could have painted them black, but I want the light to still function. Keep it as clean and OEM as possible. Still undecided if I am going to do any paint work on the inside bezels (chrome part). I will be sure to do a whole write up on this mod when I get a weekend to get it done. For now, here is a quick pictures of said items.

I have the same issue with the billertworkz however they look so much better on the center console than the stock ones. I've learned to...use my finger to find the indicator.

Perrin SI drive knob came in. Nice quality and adds a nice touch to the interior. Wish it was an actually entire button, but it does look good and match the interior well. I still have some carbon fiber door handles coming in that will rid the last bit of chrome on the car. I wish there was a solution for the diff control though...

Welp. I did it. I went down the worm hole of digging into the stereo and it looks like I have touched everything there is to touch basically. Started off with the speakers. Then a sub. Then a DSP. Finally finished it off with a capable headunit that offered OEM features, yet looked OEM.

I have been browsing around the webs for something that would fit the bill of what I am after. I wanted a headunit that had features to update the tech in the car, yet keep things as simple as possible. I didn't want to run different modules, harnesses, and amps all over the place to get it working correctly. I wanted a simple solution that was plug and play. I flirted with the idea of going with the typical pioneer/kenwood headunit, but I absolutely despised the aftermarket bezel look that comes with the upgrade. IMHO, it looked really cheap and downgraded the look of the interior. Even though it would add more tech and features, I just wasn't keen on spending $500+ on something I wasn't 100% on. Seeing all the new android headunits coming up really sparked my interest and made me realize there might be a solution that I was after.

Seicane, Dasaita, Idoing, etc. were doing all something similar. A plug in play unit that looked OEM and clean. After seeing a few different iterations of this style, I decided to go with the Idoing version as it looked the cleanest and was truly a plug and play option. Two of the features that won me over are carplay and plug and play for the OEM rear camera.

I ordered from Aliexpress during their "11.11" sale and ended up scoring it for around $340. Normally it is close to $500, so I decided to bite the bullet and get one. I figured if it sucked or it wasn't something I liked, I could sell it off cheap and not be upset about it. A mere 2 hours after I placed my order, I received a message from the seller showing me a picture of the actual unit and box wrapped up ready to ship to me. I have never gotten an actual picture of what I bought and the box it is coming in with my name and address before. It's a small detail, but this is where my love for this thing started.

3 day later, I received the package at my doorstep. Opened it up and was shocked how nice it was. The screen is gigantic and the overall quality felt just as good, if not better, than anything out there that was twice the price. All harnesses and cables were included. I honestly had a hard time not being overly excited about this as my first impression far exceeded my expectations.

Fast forward a few days later, I was able to get some time in the garage to install it. This is the third time I removed the factory OEM headunit and was excited it was my last. To simply remove an OEM headunit from a car should be pretty simple. However, to remove the stock one is simply a pain in the ass due to the location of the bottom 2 bolts. Either way, I made quick work of the removal and managed to get everything out of the car and ready to go for the new Idoing HU.

Install was extremely simple as all the plugs mated up to the harness perfectly. It does not come with instructions, so I was sort of playing the guessing game. However, it was really straight forward when you take a few minutes to look at each connection. Before buttoning eerything up, I turned the car on to check if everything was working properly. Right away, I noticed the front speakers were not working, so I immediately gt discouraged and said, I guess that's what I get for going the "cheaper" route. However, after some digging around and contacting the company, I found that you need to remove the starlink telematics module from the OEM unit and keep that plugged in. The reason for it is because the front speakers are channeled through that module for starlink. Found it very strange, but ended up plugging that in, stuffing it behind the dash, and sure enough, everything was working perfectly. Right away, I noticed the upgrade in sound. It sounds way more full, more low end, and simply just powers the speakers way better than the stock unit. It has a bit more adjustments on the EQ, so I was really able to dial in the sound I like. Bass hits hard and the sound gives off a very full sound. I know it's a worm hole with these cars to get the system to sound exceptional, but for a novice stereo enthusiast, it is more than adequate.

One of the best things about this is the simplicity. literally just plug my iphone into the supplied USB cable and up pops carplay. Just like any other modern car. Put the car into reverse, up pops the rear camera. Steering wheel controls all work perfectly just like OEM as you can set any button to whatever you want. The GPS supplied on the car is accurate and crystal clear. Bluetooth is easy to setup and stream. I honestly couldn't be more pleased with this unit. The startup time is awesome. Literally get in the car, start it, and within 1 second, the screen is on ready to roll. There is absolutely no lag time anywhere. The features on this thing is more than I'll ever want.

The fitment is like OEM. It snaps in (no bolts needed) very tightly and there are no gaps anywhere. Vents fit perfectly and all buttons snap in like OEM. Honestly, if someone didn't know this wasn't an OEM piece, I have a feeling they would think it came from the factory with it.

I have to mention the customer service as well. When I had some questions on the front speaker issue, I messaged the seller and literally within 2 minutes, I got a message on facebook from them. Mind you, this was at 11pm at night and they were talking me through the issue, showing pictures and everything. It was awesome. Easily one of, if not the best customer service I have ever experienced.

Now the real question is the longevity of it, however, I really don't see anything becoming an issue as the unit is extremely simple using up to date tech. Also based on the customer service, I have a feeling if I ever have an issue, they will do everything in their power to help me out.

I highly suggest picking one of these up if you are interested. It seriously changed my whole perspective of the car and made driving this thing that much more enjoyable. I now have all the features I'll ever need in a car all at the point of a finger.

I did end up removing my DSP I installed a bit ago as I found it to be creating a small hum when it was powered on. I decided to remove it and just use the unit itself to power the speakers. I have no regrets about that. If anyone wants it, I have it for sale for $100 (https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/sho....php?t=2890192)

I apologize for the lack of pictures. I didn't take many (actually none at all) during the install since I was so excited to just get the unit in. Here is the only picture I snapped and a quick video of carplay working. If I have the time, I plan to make a quick video showing the features and the unit overall to answer any questions anyone may have.

Here is the link to the one I got Idoing AndroidHeadunit
